GW2 unplayable without HoT?
You will see be able to play GW2 even if you don’t have the expansion. But you won’t have access to new content in the future. You probably gonna have access to the future free QoL or Feature update, but most Living Story update after the expansion will happen in Magguma in zone you don’t have access wihtout the expansion. But the game as it now it still be playable like it is now.
It’s actually not yet clear what, exactly, you will be locked out of if you don’t buy the expansion.
60 euros? that’s a bit much, have they announced the pricing and i’ve missed it?
No, no price has been announced. ANet themselves don’t have it set yet. OP is guessing.
Donari is correct. No price has been announced as yet. Nor has it been announced whether or not we’ll be able to purchase the expansion by converting gold to gems. (I know some people are banking on this and are buying gems currently to stock up lol). Personally I figure it’ll be right around 40$ – ish.
As for what’s locked and what’s not after the expansion, here’s what I know thus far:
- The base game will still be available to play. The new content is not mandatory to continue playing it.
- Specializations will only be available to those that purchase the expansion
- Revenent will only be availalbe to those that purchase the expansion
- Mastieries are also only available to those that purchase the expansion
- New chapters of the Living World will also be locked behind the purchase of the expansion (youtube interview, with MattVisual I think. Will reverify)
- Stronghold and new WvW borderland will not be locked behind the expansion purchase. (To not split the playerbase for those play modes)

If you could link the videos once you verify I wouldn’t mind seeing them as I clearly missed them.
The only thing I read was specializations, the revnant class, and the new PvE zone would be locked. I didn’t read masteries would be locked, only those associated with the jungle? I also didn’t hear about any future living story content one way or the other.
It seems odd to block more than the jungle, the new class, and specializations though. They’ll divide up the content too much beyond that.
i think and i could be wrong on this as i have no real source that the masterys from Pact Tyria as people are calling it won’t be gated behind HoT but the ones in HoT ie gliding mushroom jumping etc will be
It would be dumb if they did that and a major sales loss + discouraging potential new players. It will just be one of dem’ “you need the expansion to access this area” things.

Sure, I’ll link ‘em when I find them again. I’ve gone back through the MV interview, not the right one, but I’m not surprised. I’ve been devouring pretty much all the HoT info I could find. Sometimes it gets difficult to remember where the specific snippet comes from. XD

Thank you for information, this is what I was looking for
And yes, am guessing the price, but I dont think Anet will let money to slip their fingers but they may surprise us

The base game is at 40€ at the moment (sales notwithstanding), it would be really, really weird if an expansion would cost the same amount or more.
I’m guessing (!) it’ll be something like 29,99, because putting the price much higher doesn’t make much sense. If GW1 is anything to go by, it’ll be less than the base game.

if they price it at 60 euros, they will be letting money slip through their fingers, my money. this is a huge feature pack with a living story episode and some new neat zones (few in number). 60 euros, for me personally, is too much. 30 to 40 is my price range for what i’ve seen so far. Especially if all we get is 3 to 4 jungle only zones. The three floor zones are still jungle, and i seriously doubt we’ll be seeing anything other than greenery everywhere. Plus no underwater content what so ever which i love. 60 would be too much for me.

All correct except Masteries, only the Maguuma one will be out of reach, the “old tyria” ones will be available and usable.
Wat r u, casul?

That doesn’t seem to be true. It seems to be the case that even for masteries that are part of ‘old tyria’ you need HoT. For example, in their blog post explaining masteries Anet said:
The ability to train Masteries is unlocked at level 80 for all players that own Heart of Thorns.

That would make sense, anf I wouldn’t mind it, but I hadn’t heard it. (Doesn’t mean it wasn’t clarified and I missed it) All I heard / caught that where masteries were locked behind the expansion and that masteries would exist for the core game, not just the jungle. Did they clarify somewhere (or did I just misinterpret)?
I ask, because the info I have comes from the mastery news post:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/reimagining-progression-the-mastery-system/
The ability to train Masteries is unlocked at level 80 for all players that own Heart of Thorns.
Edit: lol Diovid, I didn’t even see your post.

Oh well so I back off on my words, seems I missed that bit. From the last interviews with Colin I really was pretty sure that Xpac would put a wall only on Maguuma stuff + every other LW update forward (specializations are tied to LW for example), and everything else will be in the core game too (actually the game is always one, there will be massive “IFs” in the code to disallow access to xpac things if you do not own it): it applies to everything (defiant changes, borderland & stronghold, camera changes, etc in core game since ain’t maguuma related) it was logical to me have the Masteries behave the same way…time to check that!
