Ah yes, I miss hunting down bosses for elite skills. I don’t think it will happen though. That’s way too big of a change at this point in the game.
They’re introducing Specializations, which are basically like secondary professions.
Sorry to bump/necro my old post but I was wondering if anything like this could be possible in GW2 at some point?
Benefits:
1. Makes Champions fun and challenging
2. Adds a fun new way to obtain elite skills
3. There’s over 150 Champions with each having 3 specific elites class skills
4. Champions only pick and use one elite class skill per spawn meaning you have a 33% chance to get the elite skill
5. Signets of Capture are sold by General Merchants for 5g a piece and have an unlimited stack
Make old school content fun again like it used to be between GW2’s launch and until the end of season one.
They did method one and two, in the past, GW2 largely players hated having to kill a boss to gain an elite skill. I don’t know about #4 but for #5, players would hate having to pay for skills again. Lastly, having unlimited stacks would be game breaking with memory constraints.

They tried this with trait system if you remember where you had to get traits by doing specific content and killing specific bosses, and it was cordially disliked by large numbers of people. So, no. I don’t think they’ll do it again with skills.
ANet may give it to you.

I hated that. I had an entire character devoted to saving tomes for when I needed an elite quickly, so that I didn’t have to hunt down bosses in hard-to-reach areas.
It was fun for the first unlock; it was tediously grindy after that. (for me, anyhow — obviously some people loved it)
It would get people to do content they usually wouldn’t and I think it would be good to re introduce.
They had us get items from certain enemies in central tyria for the new weapons like dark harvest and that is sort of the same thing, having you do something you wouldn’t do usually or anymore.
Right now I just either grind Eotm or use leveling tomes to get new skills so central tyria content has less people in general doing it.

People begged and begged for this ….. ANet added it …… People then condemned them for adding this …..
No, I don’t think they will add this again ……….

I see that your forum posts only go back 8 months so I’m going to assume you came in after the whole “earn traits by doing content” thing, so let me tell you a story.
Back at launch you earned traits by first leveling then buying trait books from an NPC to unlock trait lines. People posted repeatedly on the forum how much fun it was in gw1 to kill bosses to get elite skills and how they wished ANet had a similar system. ANet read these posts and since the game doesn’t have enough elite skills to do them that way, they set up traits as a “do content and kill bosses” to get.
People hated it. There was a long thread in the forum with people complaining about this system, that was on the forum for months. What happened in game was that many people didn’t get traits. They never bothered to go do content except to unlock a handful of traits they needed and the rest of their traits sat there unlocked. So ANet deleted that whole “progress by doing content” and put in the trait system we have now.
So, no. It would not be good to reintroduce. They’ve already tried a system like that and it failed.
ANet may give it to you.

It’s not that they were condemned for adding it, it’s that they were condemned for adding it POORLY. It left many a character crippled and traitless.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

I just went to Dulfy http://dulfy.net/2014/04/19/gw2-traits-unlocking-guide/ and looked up what you are referring to.
I agree, that was a complete fubar, whoever put that in the game should have been sacked. If I had been around then I would probably have rage quit.
But we are NOT talking about ordinary trait lines, but elite skills. ALL the traits lines we currently have should be obtainable through the current method, and elite skills for that matter too.
However I would like to see some EPIC skills, or whatever name you’d like to call them, that use the ‘-’ and ‘=’ keys added to the game. You don’t need them for open world play, or fractals or dungeons, just like ascended gear, but they would make a nice addition, and give the player a medium to long term goal, just as masteries have done.
Provided there were several paths to obtain them, and could be achieved eventually through solo play, PvP, WvW etc.
GW2 has always been about alternate character progression.

You may feel free to imagine that putting new elite skills behind content will be well done and gratefully accepted by the players.
I’ll feel free to imagine the signature that is on my posts.

I hated the old trait system too. The big issue that I felt was that they applied it to every single trait in the game rather than a single slot.
If it was just for Grandmaster traits, or just the elite skill, with the option to use a non-elite skill in the elite skill slot, I probably would have found it more tolerable.
If you add in another button or two, and make people earn those by fighting specific bosses (they better be old world Tyria open world bosses however, because screw HoT) you will find the game will start being tuned expecting you to HAVE those, making them no longer optional. At which point people will start yelling and screaming. And they will become buyable like anything else with your HP.

Thing is, if you gave the option to use a non-elite skill in the elite slot, almost nobody would take elite skills at all.
I agree with Just a flesh wound. This will never work in GW2, not to mention that
1. Each class has, like, what 4 Elite skills? What would be the point?
2. You can NOT have a complete skill build in GW2 without an elite. Unlike GW1 where elite skills were an advantage, but not a necessity.
It added absolutely nothing to the game when they did this for traits. It was make work for no other reason than to please a vocal group of GW1 players. Don’t want to see it again.
