I play with my cousin who just bought HOT, she has never played a MMO before and we are having fun in the beginning zones. the sad part is that she needs to be level 80 and only in the HOT maps to use the new gliding ability.

imagine if all the people who are playing for free can see gliders in the rest of Tyria ? why not have gliding available in all of the maps for level 80 players who have bought HOT. seems like it would be a great selling point to push HOT sales, and just having that ability on only 4 maps seems so limited.

any chance that this will move out of the HOT maps to the rest of the world ?

I don’t see it happening, it would take ages to fix the maps to make all the spots not designed for people to be in also closed off to gliders. Or conversely, to turn all those spots into spots that are suitable for people to be in.

If they took the time to do that to one map, Divinity’s Reach for example, that would be nice though.

This needs to happen, in some way. Currently, there’s an irritating disconnect between HOT and the rest of the world. Coming from the jungle into the rest of tyria feels like a core feature is removed. There have been other posts on this where people (myself included) have proposed reasonable and limited ways in which this could be implemented in central tyria, and not interfere with jumping puzzles and stuff. There are solutions that will provide players with the joy of gliding in central tyria without trivialising anything. Anet can even put a central tyria mastery around gliding if they want.

I’m of the opinion that its never going to happen.

Its not just because it trivializes jumping puzzles. That would actually be easy to fix if that was the only problem, since in the grand scheme of things there aren’t that many jumping puzzles. The bigger issue is that the maps aren’t created for it, and you could break parts of the maps in so many locations by gliding over things you aren’t supposed to get past. An issue that would be a colossal undertaking to fix, since they’d pretty much have to go through every inch of every map checking for any possible angle at which a player might be able to glide over a gap they shouldn’t be able to and break out of the map, reach spots normally inaccessible that might not be built for players (many games have areas that have textures, but no physical structure, for instance, because players can’t get to those spots anyway, and I’d imagine core Tyria is no different), and so on.

That’s not to say that I wouldn’t love if it did happen. I’ve found a lot of times journeying around central Tyria where I say to myself “man, it’d be great to glide here”. But the sheer amount of work that would need to be done just makes it completely unrealistic. In some ways it would almost require redesigning the entire game world, looking at it from a completely different perspective than what it was originally designed for.

Before HoT dropped, I would have said “never,” but after HoT. . . I have to say “maybe. Sort of.” I mean, with all the people just feeling absolutely gutted leaping off things and not being able to glide, it almost seems necessary! I do assume a number of caveats though.

  • They need to block off certain areas from gliding, to prevent trivializing JPs. Some things, like View Points, can be trivialized, because keep in mind that only players with level 80 characters would be able to learn gliding in the first place. This might come along with a general overhaul to JPs, to make it impossible to use portals either. I think it’d be cool if they made it so that JPs used a mechanic similar to the Griffin Rookery JP, in which to get the reward for it, you need to carry a bundle from start to finish. While carrying this bundle you would be unable to glide, and using a portal would cause you to drop it. This would prevent gliders from trivializing the JP, it would prevent portals from trivializing it, and it would prevent people from camping the finish line with alts. This would also allow them to up the rewards at the end, since you’d have to fully earn it each time.
  • They would need more invisible walls. These already exist in some places, such as the fort between Wayfarer’s and Diessa, but they would need to make sure that invisible walls exist around any outer walls of the map, hopefully high enough that only gliders would ever encounter them, but just to prevent casual breakouts. These would be relatively easy to implement.

I’d at least like them to have “flying days” in the major cities, where they turn on gliding just for the day, perhaps disabling jumping puzzles (chests and achievements) for that time period if they don’t want people cheesing them.

i don’t know how simple this would be.

I jump puzzle/vista areas have an NPC or a field effect that shoots you with a debuff preventing glider use

Inside cities it could be activated for kittens and giggles. Like someone mentioned prior. you need a level 80 and own the expansion to get gliders anyway, so vistas wouldn’t be much of an issue in cities.

Even that would cause a problem with JPs, as some JPs are about starting at the top or middle for parts, and having to take lethal falls (or go the long way around) to get to the bottom.

Gliding will never be part of core Tyria: each map was designed without gliding in mind; ANet would have to revisit every bit of the maps to ensure that gliding worked, that it didn’t break anything, that it didn’t trivialize fights or JPs etc, and so on. Even JA Flesh Wound’s fun suggestion of parachutes would require additional testing on a massive scale (for bugs and gameplay), just not as much as for gliding.

So that’s a lot of effort on ANet’s part (and risk of issues), without a likely source of income to help fund the change.

I was gliding in the Silverwaste, no rigging required. Do the personal story on an alt and you can Glide in that beginning instance. I’d bet we could Glide game wide by simply enabling it or not locking it out.

Knowing Anet it will probably take another year and it’ll be part of a mini expansion pack called “Heart of Nostalgia” that disables Heart of Thorns content and forces you to glide in old zones. It’ll also feature a return to the old trait system and the old legendaries will be removed from production to create scarcity.

They’ll also add a new legendary called “Sword” that requires you to swing at a wall 500,000 times to obtain it. But you’ll get banned if you try to AFK the process. Also, it will be soulbound because oops.

Also, they’ll have a gliding mastery track for each zone to glide in that zone and it will be a character bound mastery.

Or words to that effect.

See, I used to think like this too, but after playing for a while with gliding on my mind, I don’t think so.

The game already has invisible walls in a lot more places than I first realized, and invisible walls are easy to make and quite effective at preventing breakouts. So long as they place them in places that matter, players would not be able to leave the map, and while they may be able to climb around on certain ledges, they couldn’t actually accomplish anything that way.

Really the only issue would be the JPs, and like I said, I think the solution there, to not only the gliding problem but also the portal-skipping problem, is to make it so that you have to carry a bundle start to finish, one that restricts glider use. Sure, you could run the JP just for fun and glide all you like, but when you got to the end you would get no loot and no achievement unless you had your bundle with you.

If anything that would encourage replayability of the puzzles, so so people who had cleared them “right” could mess around with gliding “exploits.”

The major difference between gliding and WoW flying is that you can’t get lift. You can’t glide to any point that you couldn’t already look down on. I wouldn’t expect them to have Leylines or Updrafts in core Tyria, of course, unless there are a few places they feel like adding them. . .

I agree with the poster who said the JP are already broken in regards to using portals.
Hell I’ve seen a few mesmers making a handy profit portaling people up to difficult finish points on some JPs. The solution of carrying a bundle to complete the JP and get rewards is elegant and simple.

From my perspective as a player, it seems like a huge break in continuity with the world.
I’ve earned the ability to glide, but it only works in this tiny part of the world.

Hell, I’d pay $20 bucks for a trinket in the gem store if it would let me glide everywhere.
I don’t mind offsetting the development cost to make it happen

they should for now just add it please finalyl to the wvw borderlands and remove therefore that silly time based wind buff that makes you immune agaidsnt fall damage and replace it therefore with somethign else thats in general more useful.

the new borderlands are by design so freakign made for gliding with its lots of high spots where you can easiyl fall to death if youd have nothign to prevent that from happening …
And it would be a good place to offer glidign to all players, even those that ont have hot, so that hotless palyers coudl get at least in Wvw some kind of glimpse at iot, how it looks li,e how it functions, so that it coudl work there as some kind of incentive like say

hey you!, you want these gliders basicalyl nearly everywhere in the game, then all you need to do is to upgrade your accoutn with HoT anmd you can enjoy gliding in more parts of the game, than just only WvW.

There’s very few JPs where gliding would actually be useful (outside of saving yourself from falling damage). Most of them are either in enclosed spaces or the highest points in the area, and usually involve going upwards.

Also, JP rewards are hot garbage so I don’t care that much about defending their sanctity.

Alternatively they could get rid of falling damage, but I imagine that would receive an angry horde of players saying that it’s not only immersion breaking, but also undermines the point of gliding being in the game.

I played a game with no falling damage for a while, so I got used to it. But that’s just me.

There is still the point that it would give you a huge safetynet in most JPs, that if you fell you could glide to a lower point and recover rather than falling to your death. There also are plenty that go up and down, up and down, where you could skip a large portion by gliding.

Updrafts wouldn’t really help, because you can just flutter your gliding, dropping to just below the height you want, glide up a bit, turn it off, repeat as necessary.

I’d love to see gliding in the old maps. It would bring a lot of life and excitement back to them. As for jumping puzzles and such ..come on, let’s not pretend Anet is a stranger to invisible walls and so forth. Just have JP internally marked as areas where gliders don’t work (though I’m not even sure I’d have a problem with gliding in JPs).

Yes, all the maps would need to be tweaked, but I’d say it’s a tweak worth doing. I personally love gliding and find it very disappointing that I can only actually do it in so few areas. Even the new WvW Borderlands has it disabled (and correct me if I’m wrong, but I could swear I remember gliding in there during beta).

Is there any reason why we can’t use gliders everywhere rather than just in the HoT maps? Still need HoT to gain mastery but once you have it why not? It seems a bit disjointed to not be able to use it for no good reason. Reminds me of DAoC when they added underwater, it just seemed odd when you could only swim in the expansion zones.

I can’t even think they would need to re-balance/change any of the existing map designs, so what if you no-longer die if you fall off a JP?

Jumping puzzles themselves could have glider restrictions, but general locations really shouldn’t be unglideable. My character mastered glider use and can only use it in a rather dull jungle… on exactly four maps. So here’s hoping Anet eventually does include them elsewhere. It’s one thing to add long-term horizontal progression for characters – it’s another thing entirely if 400 hours of progression turns out to be ultimately of no use outside one or two maps.

jumping puzzles aren’t the main issue I don’t think. Many areas that are visible but technically out of reach have no ground or collision substance so the fact that gliders would be able to reach there would cause problems. They’d have to take a lot of time to inspect each map/put up invisible walls to make sure gliding would work since they weren’t initially designed with gliding in mind. Not impossible but it would take time. There was another thread about this with a lot of good reasons why it wouldn’t be feasible without a lot of effort. I’d like to see it though so hopefully at some point they are able to make gliding available for the core maps.

This is déjà vu for me. The same issue was raised years ago in WoW when flying mounts became available, but were restricted to certain zones (I think it was the new Cataclysm zones, but it’s been years so I may be wrong about that.)

Players clamored for allowing flying mounts in all zones, and… Blizz eventually did exactly that after a year or so. So maybe if we keep asking for it, yet remain civil and not abusive, Anet will do the work to enable it.

Uh… not so. The gliding mechanic is simply a subprocess linked to the jumping process, and is part of the game engine. I’m not suggesting that updrafts and other things be added to the old maps – that would be an unpleasant graphical change to the landscapes and layouts – I’m simply suggesting that we be able to climb mountains and glide down into valleys (or stop ourselves dying from jumps). There are a lot of places where this would be both viable and pleasant.

I am struggling to see how gliding helps jumping puzzles much, give me an example.

Using gliding in Troll’s Revenge comes to mind. I’ll be honest: I haven’t done that puzzle, and I’ll definitely use gliding to get it done if I’m able.

Edit: I can also see it being used in that nightmare jumping puzzle underneath Silverwastes too.
