Gliders just a worse version of flying mount

Cannot use glider anywhere outside of the new map. Can only use it for a short period of time and you do not get a selection of rare version to collect and rub in the face of the poor people.

So? Noone ever said there will be flying mounts available. Ever. I find the idea of gliding interesting and just gonna wait and see how it turns out. Noone can say anthing about it yet.
Go play WoW kid.

The only thing I am terribly disappointed is that gliders won’t be available in old maps. It feels so meh. C’mon! You have an opportunity to make this game so much cooler with those gliders, make them work in vanilla game!

Sure lets prospone the expansion untill the end of 2017
If you want to fly, then go play Aion.

Theyve said that some expansion features will eventually reach the rest of the game. Take that however you want it.

No, no not this. Not another mount topic.

But gliders are already coming to the game. I just don’t understand why can’t we use them in normal maps for exploration. I am not one of the “give us mounts” crowd.

1. They’ve said that they may introduce HoT features to older areas of the map.
2. What’s to say that with increasing the Mastery doesn’t increase the time you can use the glider / eliminates the need for endurance / endurance isn’t spent when riding on air currents etc? Not only that, we don’t even know how long we can use the gliders for yet before endurance runs out.
3. Where have they said that you’re unable to get different glider skins?

The main issue I have is the fact that masteries are not universal for the entire game, most are HoT zone exclusive

As someone who played ArcheAge for a few months (before throwing in the towel after trying to carve out a PvE niche that would be fun, which ends up not working so well if you’d like to do a ‘little’ PvE content beyond 30), I had the initial frustration of not being able to just fly forever (learned that one the best possible way to learn it, it’s really quite funny when you hear yourself spontaneously let our your best Darth Vader imitation), but afterwards.
But soon after, really began to appreciate the mechanics of it, planning how far you can go, how much altitude you’d need to land, considering how much fall damage you could take if you might not make it, moving from mountain to mountain, etc. There is a lot more ‘flying’ with gliding than flying in something like, say, WoW, which is really just swimming in the air.
I’m looking forward to their implementation (and twists) on how that will work, and am excited to see how a very vertical zone will work out. Get some use out of those map layers other than The Grove.
I’d love to see gliding implemented all over the world. AION made it work okay and it seems like the mechanics will be similar anyway.
I’d love upgradable/collectible gliders, too, like plant themed ones for sylvari, steam ones for charr, etc.

And walking is just a worse version of having a mount that will let you move faster.
Is that your logic?
We have seen alot of mount-threads and most people are against them. Flying mounts or not. Gliders aren’t supposed to be mounts. They are supposed to be a mechanic that will give a new twist to exploration. That doesn’t mean you should have a flying mount, skip all the jumping puzzles, fly to all vistas and points of interest and pretty much ignore the entire world beneath you.
I have never once seen OP make a positive post about Guild Wars 2.
On topic: I am looking forward to hang gliding a lot.

I got to say I was disappointed when I found out all the details about gliders.
The “epicness” of it during the reveal definitely fizzled out for me after I learned it was for a very limited part of the world.
Meh. Too bad really. Oh well.
I’d have loved for gliders to be used from everywhere in Tyria.
However, I understand why it’s not possible.
The invisible walls on the mountains that keep you from going past them? They may not be high enough to stop someone flying from passing by. Breaking the map.
Jumping puzzles, vistas, etc could be made too easy. Which I doubt ANet wants to do.
There would have to be too much work to counter those things for the percentage of players who would actually go and use the gliders in the original areas.

Also, gliding =/= flying. Gliding needs air presure (turbulance ?) to move up. Only if Anet make some mechanic in the air at some point , i think gliding in GW2 is always going downward.

na i’d rather have gliders than some Auto fly machanic , the maps are ether too short from point A to B and flying makes that distance direct , while gliders make the maps feel so much bigger in the view of you have to find wind tunnels and travel part by ground part by air, this way you don’t miss any of those nice little features.
when i played WoW moons ago , i never even explored most of the areas because of the flight system it was all too easy to go from Point A to B no sense of adventure all you had to do was go to Point B and walk/mount run for 5mins and thats your exploring done.
this glider system is much more immersive.
though / Note When the jungle dragon wakes up make him rip the ground all over tyria to create more Wind tunnels then make gliders map wide ace , could update older maps to have a Second floor or secret areas where only gliders/ glider masters can reach.
Why does everything being used to traverse, whether it be land, water or air have to be referred to as a mount? Would a parachute/sled/snowboard or surfboard be considered a mount too?
I’m tired of people constantly griping about how ‘poor’ of a mount something is. If it was intended as a mount, they’d say so. Otherwise take it for what it is, merely a tool to get to your destination or to keep you from turning into a pile of blood and bones on the ground.
Mounts are more animated (like a horse or something with flapping wings), what is animated about a hang-glider besides drifting downwards from a higher elevation?
And as mentioned countless times already, this game doesn’t need them.
/end thread pls

As someone who played ArcheAge for a few months …
Same here. There’s a lot of things that can be said about the game, good and bad. But gliding was definitely in the “good” category. And one of the things that made it good was that it was limited, and you had to learn those limits (often the hard way). You need more thought, planning, practice.
Full on Flying can be cool, but I feel the appeal wears off fast and then it’s just kind of boring. Let’s face it, not a lot is actually happening up there. You can just hover in place forever and nothing ever happens to you. And while having no limits can be nice, it also takes away any sense of accomplishment of actually getting somewhere.
So I have come to appreciate gliding more than flying. Also, it may be BETTER here than AA. In AA, you you have a 3 minute timer no matter who you are or what glider you have (aside from that one Kraken glider I guess). But in HoT, via the Mastery system, you can actually increase your duration and other attributes/abilities. That will be awesome. On the other hand, in AA you can glide ANYWHERE, and here we’ll be restricted to only certain zones.
That’s my one disappointment. I wish we could glide anywhere in the game (possibly excluding WvW, ..possibly not). But I understand why it is how it is. Maybe someday in the future they’ll let us, but I won’t hold my breath. I do hope at least, for all new maps going forward, they make them with gliding in mind.

Did they not mention in the initial announcement that there were mechanics to help you go farther in gliding? I may be making it up but I thought something like what you are suggesting was mentioned.

I played Aion and I can’t even count the number of times I thought to myself, “hey, what’s over there?” then proceeded to glide over to some low-resolution scenery right next the edge of the map. Yeah, it wasn’t as “built with that in mind” as some people might remember.
It’s already possible to jump out of most maps in Guild Wars 2. If they added gliding, they’d also have to add thousands of invisible walls, and in the end, it would all be for nothing (aside from ruining most jumping puzzles).

Like in dry top they added those spheres to jump high, dash fast, and do massive leaps. They are all limited as well and serve to get from point a to point b a new way. Gliders will have a similar feel I would imagine but while flying. I don’t see skins necessary as I truly don’t think it’s for anything but smaller 30 second flights and your not always going to see more then a couple people in the air at a time

I heard they have endurance meteres or a time limit on use, That is a BAD idea I mean gliding is NOT flying you constantly descend slowly why not just allow it to be realistic I mean if you hit a wall or a branch you should fall. but if im mid gliding and a time bar runs out and I fall from a high distance that is going to be really stupid.

because thats what they essentially are
you must understand that the maps we will be using them have been specifically designed with this mechanic in mind where as the original maps were not designed with this type of thing in mind
if they did add it to the original maps all you would see on the forums is qqing about collision and invisible walls
as well as the fact that it would break all events on the old maps as well
the amount of work that would have to go into re doing everything is ridiculous

I get why vents and stuff won’t be available everywhere, but the glider itself could. I jump off of stuff right now that kills me every time. Just having a little parachute to gently float down doesn’t seem that game breaking, and they’ve already done the work. It’s my understanding that it’s not gonna be a mini game type thing but just something where you jump off of something and glide. Could be wrong, and will be seriously disappointed if I am.

They specifically said it triggers anywhere you hit ‘freefall’, which is probably terminal velocity, or a certain amount of fall speed.
I’d presume part of the mastery giving you ‘the ability to ride air currents’ includes updrafts. It’s probalby speed jumps and ups.

Each Mastery track is tied to a region of Tyria—they must be unlocked with Mastery points gained in that region and can only be trained in that region. With the launch of Heart of Thorns, there will be two Mastery regions: the Heart of Maguuma, encompassing all PvE zones that are part of the Heart of Thorns expansion, and the core Guild Wars 2 world, encompassing all PvE zones currently available in the game today.
and for the OP do believe me there WILL be skins for the gliders, im positive on that, they might only be cash shop, but i wouldnt be surprised if there was a skin for mastering the mastery for the gliders though

The thing is they designed the new maps with gliders in mind. obviously they are going to be very vertically designed. I don’t really want to see people gliding all over the old maps. Something just doesn’t sit well with me on that.
There is a reason why WoW has decided to remove flying from their latest expansion after having it for years. It completely breaks the immersion.
It isn’t designed to be a mount? It’s designed to get us to places that are hard to reach or require a glider?

Now I want a parachute to take less fall damage! ;D parachute mastery? ;p
Don’t think of the glider as a simple mount, think of it as a new activity, like jumping puzzles, with an added map progression system attached to it.
If you are going into this expecting a simple flying mount, that you can use anywhere, anytime, for as long as you want, you will be very disappointed. The main function of the glider is to provide a new activity and a way to progress your exploration of a zone. It is not designed to simply help you get from A to B faster. It has more functionality than that.
