From what I saw from the presentation I think the ability to hang glide will be limited to the new region. It does not look like it is a mount of some sort but an ability to glide instead of falling to your death.

It’s extremely unlikely you’ll use it everywhere, though you never know.

It looks like it’s going to be a key way to make content in the Jungle somewhat sequential. As in, to get to this next place you need to have these gliding abilities so you can make this gap, ride this thermal, etc.

I think that’s important to understand, from what little we’ve heard so far. Gliding looks like a mechanic that is about progression, not freedom. (At least, not right away.)

It will probably be fun, but ultimately it’s there to restrict where you can go immediately, not increase it. As you get better at it (both player skill and character mastery) you’ll be able to reach new places.

At least, that’s my working theory so far!

They stated in the announcement they will be unique to the new map content.

Even still I hope they eventually add it to the whole world it would open up so much fun messing around and I like this idea a lot since you wont be able to insta fly over everything.

I actually wouldn’t be surprised if we can use it everywhere. All it’s doing is allowing you to fall in a direction at a slower rate, there are very few things that would be broken in the existing map by that ability. Most JP’s are across or upwards.

I just really love this idea I like Gliding a lot in games ever since I played Soul Reaver.
As a bored high level that will devour all the new content in problably 2 weeks time It will give me something to do.

Unless there’s a pretty large rework with some of the older maps, I don’t see gliders being available in old zones.

It’s currently very possible to climb out of the map in several locations FROM THE GROUND. ANet try to stop this when possible.

Now, given that we can get to a high place and glide, it means we can access areas that weren’t available before. This means areas that ANet hasn’t prepared for public use.

There’s a lot of special techniques that go into speeding up the render time of a game. So some textures are designed to only be viewed from one side. Others are so far away that they’re literally 2D sprites.

I think it would be possible to integrate them into old zones, but there’d need to be a substantial amount of work to ensure map breaking doesn’t become trivial.

It all depends on your drop rate with the gilder though.
