HP Grind will hurt Gem Purchases
Interesting perspective. Thanks for giving Anet the idea of putting HP boosters on the gem store.
its kinda true tough… i also wanted to unlock elites for my altes to play around with them and even make a few more alts for this exact reason – now im still going to unlock my elite and i will try to enjoy it- but im not gonna do that 10 more times, that would drive me nuts

The map design of Tangled Path and Dragon’s Stand are absolutely horrendous. The first 2 maps are borderline bearable. HP and Mastery are just the tip of the iceberg of how horrid HoT as a whole.
I think it was a big mistake making elite specialisations so hard to fully unlock. I didn’t know it was going to be this difficult. 400 hero points!? :-/ so you literally have to have all the hero challenges of the world done, as well as all the new ones in maguuma (the maguuma ones I don’t mind to an extent because I can get these done eventually through WvW/Edge of the Mists, but doing this on ALL my alts? No thanks…). That’s too much I reckon, especially if you want your alts to have their specs unlocked. Yikes.
ok a bit of misinformation there zoada if you have all of the main game hero points you only need 20 from the new areas. if you have none of the main game hero points you will need 40 from the jungle.
you might still see it as grindy but i just want to point out it is not all of x and all of y needed.
also i have to strongly disagree with comments about bad map design, i think they are coming from a place where people are not used to the maps, not used to thinking in terms of masteries (oh i could glide, mushroom jump/other over there) and in general just have not figured a lot of the stuff out yet.
its not even out of its first weekend of release yet so thats natural but i feel its important some perspective is put on it. i doubt very much the same kind of stuff will be said a couple months down the line
I’m upset because I have to do more to have more. Totally unreasonable.

It is a weird design decision to make the new weapon skill so hard to fully unlock.
It just cuts people off from trying it. Sure some more dedicated players will do it, but some people will see the grind and say “meh”, and stick with the still valid weapons they easily unlocked already, with many not bothering at all with alts.
I mean the new weapons are not superior in any way shape or form and is just another play style, so making such a big grind gating that extra play style just seems like an odd decision to me.
To my understanding, I thought the mastery system was suppose to be the new “levels” to grind, not the hero points for a weapons kill that is completely optional.
It comes off as one of those decisions that were made for the developers benefit and not the players. Something to pad out the grind, even if it’s to the detriment of the user experience, a pitfall that many MAAAANY MMO developers fall back on far too many times.

i dont see how its to the detriment of the user experience at all. what do pve-ers do when they are 80? either they stop playing or they pick something in the game they want to work towards. that something could as easily be a weapon or armor set as it could be the elite spec or map completion. if they want it its there to go for, if not they dont have to. if everything was just given for free what would they have to do?
Getting the hero points isn’t that bad… it’s often getting the masteries to get the hero points but those are account wide… so once you’ve gone through it once you should be able to go through much quicker afterwards.

Correction, 200 if you have map completion, 400 if not. I know this for a fact because I have 2 characters with map completion, and they are only halfway through out of the box.

You are correct, you only need to do 20 hero [Challenges}. Here’s the problem, in order to do all 20, there are certain heropoints that is restricted because you didnt hit a certain Mastery lvl(maguma jg rank). Another point out is these hero points are no joke, like 4 spawned champions must be killed under a certain timelimit.
This will be a problem in the future when the population of active players declines and there isn’t enough people who will do the hero points due to being f2p or they don’t want to do the elite specialzation.

Doubtful. With these kinds of games, 90% of cash shop purchases comes from 10% of the actual player base, generally speaking. And I’m willing to bet those kinds of “whales” – as the industry refers to them – are loyal to a fault.
Early days.
I’d imagine they will release some type of mechanic in the future to cater for this like experience scrolls or some such with the intent, for now, to have players focus on their favorite classes first time around.
I only roll 2 mains, my alts are just mules I jump on if I’m really bored or for sPvP, but I have a lot of friends with multiple accounts and virtual armies of alts. I would be surprised if this isn’t a short term mechanic with a long term alternate option already in the works unless Anet have no issues annoying altoholics that have spent thousands on the game.
Not exactly good business practice.
