I know hang gliding will be a thing in HoT, and I assume/hope that there will be tons of new jumping puzzles too. So I keep wondering how will they keep you from just gliding to the end of a jumping puzzle? A debuff of some sort that keeps you from getting credit unless you take the long way?

Also, assuming they have a solution to this, would it be possible to enable gliding in the old world as well? Back when I played WoW being able to fly in Outland but not Azeroth was helluva annoying and I’m hoping the same thing isn’t going to happen here.

Sadly, the old world maps are not made for gliding, and you’d be able to get to all sorts of places they never intended. It would take a massive amount of work to fix all the maps.

As for jumping puzzles, I think the easiest thing to do is to make it so you need to go up as you go, and have no place to glide into the puzzle from and no updrafts.

Sarcasm, delivered with a
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

Strategic placement of updrafts and obstacles preventing you from going up, I guess. And you just described the reason why it won’t be available in the rest of Tyria – it would mean rebuilding too many maps.

There also could be checkpoints, like in the Drydock jp, that you can’t trigger with glider.

From what i understood from the angryjoe interview, when HoT rolls out, jumping puzzles will turn into instanced activities (like the adventure/quest system) with their own leaderboards and better prizes the faster you complete it.

given that it’s instanced, it’d probably be safe to say that they could disable gliders while inside it.

and even if it has an un-instanced version, i wouldn’t be surprised if they have the ability to simply disable gliders while you’re in that area. (and this leaves open the possibility for jumping puzzles utilizing the glider too!)

Seeing as how gliding is basically falling with some style, make the end point higher than the starting point.

Haven’t heard anything about them being instanced.

as I said, I wouldn’t say it’s confirmed, but it seems like the direction they want to go (if that link doesn’t link the time properly, it’s at about 16:00)

if they don’t instance it i’m not exactly sure how they’ll do leaderboards, since mesmer portals and such are a thing. it just seems like the most simple way to have a good leaderboard system, even if instancing it “does” kind of break the immersion
