Has HoT been worth the price?
I’d watch some streams, read some (industry) reviews and shop around. You can pick it up from a number of different outlets when you come to make your choice.
I’ve been through a few expansion launches for MMOs, and so far this one seems to out-value the others.
It’s worth it IMO.
Let’s see: why did you quit GW2? Depending on your answer, I would heavily recommend against buying HoT, because it caters to a very… let’s call it “special” audience.
All depends on what your most interested in when buying the expansion.
Story is short only 16 chapters and without the mastery gating its an evenings game play to finish it.
The elite specs some are nice but a lot of work to get the hero points to unlock them and a lot of waiting around trying to find help doing them (most are champs that are not solo-able).
But if you purchase direct from anet then they have a refund policy that will allow you to get your money back for up to 30 days.
I stopped playing GW2 a little over a year ago and I am considering coming back. However I just want to know from those who are playing HoT, is the expansion worth the $50 price? Do you feel like it has plenty of new content? Or do you feel like it was a bit pricey for the content you received?
What I am looking for is, should I go ahead and buy now, or wait a few months for a sale?
Read the HoT feedback in the big thread here before you buy anything.
There is oodles of content. If you enjoy exploring beautiful environments and having one of the best story-telling experiences in an MMO it’s totally worth it.
Having played majority of WoW expansions I can easily say that the four maps in HoT have far more explorable space and content density than any that Blizzard has ever released.
If you have the expectation that you will be able to access everything right away you’ll be disappointed.
If you enjoyed dungeons in GW2 you’ll probably be disappointed.
Take that as you will. It was totally worth my $100 and will continue to be for many months. It’s just a matter of what $50 is worth to you.
buyer beware. you cannot play the new specializations upon purchase. ymmv on the new maps (many hate the verticality/jumping puzzle nature of it). there is precious little in the way of loot…only has 2 new armor sets…and a few weapon skins.
i know it is difficult to not purchase if you like core game. one would assume that no matter bad it is they must have done some things right. hot however has very few redeeming qualities. as the poster above said i would at least skim thru some of this thread before purchase:

No. I play a warrior, and our elite spec is largely trash outside of extremely high-end meta PvE builds. I’ve spent probably equal time doing the Halloween event and WvW/EotM than I have the new content. What’s worse is that I feel like I’m forced to do the new content. It’s not my choice to do the new content, it’s forced onto me.
I don’t like that.
HoT is only aimed at the hardcore crowd.
It´s great.
Watch known youtubers stream it or wait for an industry review to get your info.
Forums are a bad place to seek real objective info.
forum dwellers would go nuts about the need to
“grind” to get exp, new swords, new potions etc
It’s been worth it to me, lots of content and maps.
Not finding it too difficult.
It’s good, I like it.
It would be really a lot better if it would stop crashing.
I bought the $100 Ultimate edition and have had no regrets at all. Been having a blast both in HoT and doing Halloween stuff since it started. Only 1 glitch so far and that easily fixed by going out of the instance and starting it over. The instance itself only took 20 mins to do anyway so no real loss of time for my husband and I.
Can’t tell you, must grind !

“Hardcore” PvE…LoL.
HoT is only aimed at the hardcore crowd.
It´s great.
So was Wildstar.
Only you can really make that decision. It all mainly comes down to what you like.
If you want some great scenery and fun exploration, go for it. If you like the story, the story is awesome so go for it. If you want harder content than what is available in the core game, go for it.
HoT is rather breathtaking visually, and the story is really good, although really short. It feels like a Living World episode, and not a full expansion story. Only two new armors and they are “alright” I guess. Not my style, but some might like them. Just more about the fact that there is only two armors with this expansion. The new zones can be a bit confusing at first, and rather daunting, but spend enough time in them and you’ll find your way around. The multiple levels are the confusing part.
Then you got the Mastery system. Pretty much everything in HoT is gated behind this system. Want to explore certain areas? Level Masteries. Want that hero point? Level Masteries. Want to continue the story? Level Masteries. Want to buy stuff from that vendor? Level Masteries. It can be a bit grindy at first, but know that it is account bound so at least the first time will be a struggle, but with your alts, it won’t be too bad cause you’ll have most of the required stuff unlocked by then.
That leads to the new elite specs. That are “kind of” locked behind Masteries as well. They require 400 skill points, which will require you to go to HoT to finish. If you did map completion in the core game, you should have a bit over 200 skill points, so you’ll only need 200 more. HoT skill challenges give 10 per challenge, but they are no easy feat. Some are champion bosses, others require certain Masteries to unlock, and some are multiple elite mobs. So you won’t be able to play your elite spec to its full potential till about half way through the content, or till the end of all the content.
But that’s HoT for you in a nutshell. Hope that helps you decide.

Yea, in terms of pure content, it’s definitely worth the $50. That doesn’t mean you’ll love the expansion (as seen by the angry posts around here), but there’s tons of stuff to do. Below is a link to a vid that summarizes all the stuff in the xpac pretty well:
If they leave it like it is no do not buy, in fact I would recommend waiting to see “if” they make any adjustments. I purchased day 1 for pre-order so I’m over my 30 days. If I had been given the opportunity to “try before you buy” I would not buy in its current state. Again just my opinion other’s will/may vary.
Besides the ridiculous gating of the new specs, I think this expansion is worth the money. The zones are very well designed and are quite A-typical of MMO zones. They require a bit more thought and dexterity than the rest of the game (and most other MMO’s for that matter) but that added challenge makes them more engaging and enjoyable at least to me. The story is better quality than most of what GW2 has on offer, and the mastery system as a whole is an interesting take on leveling. I also appreciate the item collections for unique skins and Ascended weapons. Finally we have a way to get some Ascended weapons that don’t rely on crafting (boring) or RNGesus. Also, the Revenant is a really fun class to play. I’m meh on the new spec for my ele main, so its been nice playing as a new class that actually has new, unique and fun mechanics to it.
worth the price? as of now…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHA…………………no
Do not buy now.
Wait to see if ANet makes enough changes to improve the expansion.
Has HoT been worth the price? It has been out five days…Not quite yet, but give it a couple of more weeks. :P
No.
Its an expansion – UNFINISHED expansion (they will add things to it over the time)
I refuse to pay this much for a half or even quater-product.
I’m not regretting my purchase. I think it was worth the $50.
I sincerely recommend it. I’ve enjoyed the exploration aspect of it, and I like that people are far more likely to play in groups in the new content. It’s challenging enough to not be boring, but not terribly hard to play solo – I say this as a thief main running a berzerker set.
No, worst $50 ever spent, boredom sets in really fast. In the coming weeks the population will thin out, good luck to those people trying to leveling up.
Well the expansion itself isnt bad, i enjoy it except for 1 detail.
The kitten elite specs advertised will require you to nearly complete the kitten expansion to fully enjoy it ( specially with Revenant).
Well since i was planning on using these elite specs to to enjoy the new gameplay options in HoT its busting the experience to a very noticeable degree.
Only for that, because these new specs were the main reasons i invested in this in the first place, it feels like getting a very nice new toy to play with but “batteries sold separately”…
It will be worth every penny if they will fix the elite specialization character progression hoax. 400 hero points for 1 traitline, a few utilities, and 1 weapon for a specialization that is no better than you original profession is NOT character progression.
If they leave the elite spec system as it is right now…… Not worth the money
As others have said wait until some industry reviews and videos come out to determine if it is worth it. I personally think it well worth it in terms of content/new zones/elite specs. There is a lot to do for sure but opinions vary from person to person. A lot of players who enjoy the xpac are still actively playing it and not posting on the forums so beware of the negativity you find here as those players who do enjoy the xpac are playing it! Personally I would recommend it just due to sheer content and the fact that it is a breath of fresh air. It should be noted currently you can’t just jump into the new elite specs and the idea is you earn it as you play the xpac so take that as you will. Hope this helps.
TL;DR I find it well worth the money, I suggest waiting for industry reviews and videos to come out if you are really unsure.
I don’t get people’s concept of “worth the price”. They’ll spend $8 on a movie ticket for 2 hours of entertainment but they hesistate to spend $50 on potentially hundreds of hours of entertainment.
The expansion is great. I would agree that it is aimed at hardcore PVE so as others have said … why did you stop playing the game in the first place? That being said … the new maps are great, the content is worth the money. I bought the $100 pre purchase and i don’t regret it. There will always be those who love it (like me) and those who hate it as you will see by some other posts but you have to decide if your ready to commit to new content, because you wont get far if you don’t. Masteries are where its at … and that takes time and effort and patience lol

And I paid $650 for my cell that will last 2 years…should I pay $650 for GW2 too. Your analogy makes no sense.
It has to me. If you are looking for a continuation to the story. You are looking for harder content. You are looking for more reasons to team up in the open world. You are looking for an alternative way to play your profession. If yes to these things, it will probably be worth it for you.
Yes. Love it!!!!!!
