But now to unlock elite specializations, which is a content I paid for when I bought this expansion, I’m forced to farm those kittenty hero points which means either I farm them in the original pre expansion maps, or I try to get the ones in the expansions maps which are too difficoult for me and require help from other players which I don’t have! Too much effort required to obtain something everyone should be able to access!

There are enough solo points in HoT zones to max your elite spec especially if you already have at least some from the old world too.

Check for example from these Dulfy’s guides which are suitable:

There is a total of 614 hero points in game.

214 in vanilla Tyria (some of which are in the wvw maps)
400 in HoT zones

Required are 250 hero points for maxing an elite specialisation.

A lot of the HoT hero points are easily soloable and require only some channeling or defeating an easy veteran mob.

On top of that you can play wvw and unlock hero points via the heroic notary if you are having to hard of a time or are to lazy to run around a bit.

There is regular hero point trains lead by commanders where literally all you have to do is follow around.

I’m sorry but if you are so casual (and/or unsocial or player averse) that with all these possibilities you are not able to over time finish your elite specialisation, I’d have to ask why you are playing a MMO in the first place?

The hero points in HoT are easy to get. If you don’t have a guild just ask in chat if there is a train going or look in the lfg tab. Can get the hero points required in a couple hours at most if you actually try.

But now to unlock elite specializations, which is a content I paid for when I bought this expansion, I’m forced to farm those kittenty hero points…

Weren’t hero/skill points always a thing in this game? Someone who bought GW1 had to go collect skill points to train things. You find the HP challenge, you kill someone/a group or commune. You can do the same in HoT maps, just find the spots, commune and get 10 points. I found it much more work to get Hero points in Tyria than in HoT, and even if you don’t kill a single champ, you can get enough for your elite spec. With my last character, I didn’t get a single hero point in Tyria, I used the L80 boost and got the HPs I need for the elite from HoT maps within an hour or so. It takes days or weeks to get that many points in Tyria.

No idea what you are complaining about.

The options are make the game so easy and fast that I’m too bored to play it, or make it more challenging an annoy casual players who feel any level of difficulty is too hard for them.

You can learn to play better and get hero points in HoT. On the other hand I can’t learn to enjoy something simpler and more boring.

Hero points in the original game were nothing more than marks on the map that gave me something to do, in almost every case. There was no challenge. There was no point to them at all, except to make me stop for a minute or so. Definitely not my idea of engaging gameplay.

If you want an elite spec, you should prepare yourself to do some elite content.

Or you can WvW, follow a commander around and unlock hero points without ever stepping into a hot zone.

But at the end of the day, all any MMO really is is a list of stuff to do. If those hero points were just given to me for walking up to them, I’d have had nothing to do much sooner.

They’re fine the way they are.

Originally, if you wanted your abilities while leveling, completing skill challenges was required. It wasn’t until 80 that the alternative opened up, the ability to gain skill points for further levels.

If HoT stuck to the original design, you probably would have bought an elite spec trait book for 10g, which would have unlocked usage of the specialization and all of its traits. For the abilities, you would be free to choose which ones you wanted, but they would be tiered, so you’d need to buy the healing skill first, then the abilities and finally the elite. Additionally, HoT would have had its own HoT-brand skill points complete with its own experience bar to gain extras.

There was no challenge.

The core game’s original skill challenges as intended were more challenging than HoT’s. If you want the same experience today, you need to play in +10 level areas with a condition build.

I didn’t realize illuminating an alternative way for the OP to achieve his goals would affect you in such a way. My apologies.

I’d also argue that I play zero time to unlock an elite. I play WvW to WvW. As an ancillary benefit I get to insta-80 and insta-specialize in less than 5 minutes so I can start stabbing people in the face on my new shiny character that much quicker.

YMMV however and I’m happy that you’re happy doing Hero Point Trains but the OP clearly stated he hates doing them. Kudos to you though.

If you wanted to give the OP an alternative way of getting the Elite trait line, why didn’t you say so? Like:

“OP, you can also play WvW so you don’t have to do hero challenges in PvE. It works like that: You do this and that, and then, when you create a new character, you can use this/that to unlock the elite traits.”

You don’t even tell how it works, do you have to collect things in WvW that you can use to purchase hero points? Do you get hero points just by playing WvW? I have no idea, and the OP probably neither. Your post arrived at my address like this: “Ha, I have a smarter and faster way to get the Elite traits than you guys, I play WvW!”

Btw. I sometimes do hero challenges despite already having done them before, because just like you play WvW to WvW, many people play PvE to PvE, and as a side effect, they get hero points and other stuff.

You can buy HoT hero pointss with 10 proof of heroics at the Heroic’s Notary NPC in WvW, anywhere you spawn.

You get them from leveling in WvW but also from reward chests you get from pips. Basically if you just follow a commander around and get levels you’ll get proof of heroics.

I doubtless play more hours than you, but otherwise all of that describes me as well. And I really don’t see the problem. What you’re saying, if I get your drift, is that ANet should have just given us everything straight out of the box, rather than giving us things to do. But filling out the elite specs is totally consistent with the base game – it’s part of HoT character progression, just as populating other specs is part of levelling in the base. And despite your “too difficult for me” comment, it’s not as though ANet have actually made it hard – you not only get 10 HP per challenge, but there’s absolutely no way that you need your elite spec to take part in HoT maps. A sensible base-game L80 spec and sub-optimal gear is fine (I’ve fully-unlocked the elite spec on 40 characters so far, of all professions, so I have plenty of familiarity with the experience, and what’s actually needed – and there’s no way I’m going to invest in top-of-the-line gear for all of those!). It normally takes me no more than 60-90 minutes to fill out the elite spec on a new L80, which I always do on principle, even if I don’t expect or plan to ever use it. That’s once I’ve navigated the pain that is the first two HoT story episodes, mind, to actually get into VB – but even there, it’s not actually all that hard, and I have it down to an art by now. As for HPs, knowing where the points are, and which ones are trivially easy to solo (and there are plenty of those!) helps, of course – as does having some of the HoT masteries – but, then, I learned that and gained those by actually playing through the HoT story content. And even the trickier of the early HoT HPs are regularly done by people doing exactly what you’re trying to do – if you keep an eye on chat, and learn where things are, it’s not exactly hard to just go join in and pick them up.

No dice, OP. There are a vast excess of Hero Points in HOT. It’s just a matter of knowing which you can solo, which you can solo quickly and which ones don’t require combat. If a hero point seems too hard, it probably is – just move on (or reroll full minion Axe/Focus necro – easiest elite spec unlock ever. Using this method, you can get reaper in level up gear…).

I actually enjoyed unlocking the elite spec when HOT launched, mainly because of the hype associated with “oh, I got a new skill! WHAT DOES IT DO?!” You have to take time to appreciate the small things – it’s okay to be a little impatient, but a big part about being casual is the journey, not the destination.

Yes, you either try to play normally which means struggling to get to the HP only to find it’s a champion that kills you, or locked behind a Mastery and might also kill you, or you have to “study up” (leave the game) to figure out which ones you can do solo or with the odd person that might be along to help. Not a good system to me and will be even worse once the new expansion hits.

Or you stay in game, trigger a hero point and get ready to run in case it’s a champ. I never EVER had to research a hero point to learn how to do it.

I triggered it and dodged away. If it looked like a champ and I was alone, I ran away.

U just answered yourself right there. Access. Everyone who bought HoT has access to elite specializations. Access means u can unlock them, they’re not given to you.

Everyone also has access to ascended and legendary collections for items. Do they get these items handed by anet? NO. It is called progression.

HoT was originally 400 and another 65 was needed for your core skills. They were trying to tone down the excess, but only ended up making it worse. If they want to try again, the next expansion will need to be closer to 800 points, since HoT doubled the excess. It doesn’t really matter how much the total is, because they’ll just bloat the value of hero challenges again, which you can only hope they don’t try to foolishly justify as raids this time, considering they’d need to be 20+ points each.

Sure it’ll probably take that person 15-20 hours to learn the zones and get the points they need. But 15-20 hours while also leveling masteries, and getting XP and loot, some would call that playing the game.

How is it worse when they´ve decreased the needed heropoints ?
It was much at the beginnng but they listened to their community and toned down the needed pints by 150.

Probably they´ve learned of the mistakes they have made and are able to avoid them in the next expansion.

How is it worse when they´ve decreased the needed heropoints ?

The excess is worse, which was what they were trying to solve when they originally redesigned hero points.

What ArenaNet doesn’t want is for elite specs to be obtained the minute the expansion is launched, since they want you to play the content with a sense of progression. If you had 100% of the available points going into HoT, it meant you were roughly 50% complete, which is really how it should have been for everyone (fully unlocked halfway through the expansion). They wanted your past progress to matter, but the problem is, it’s not fun for everyone else, since in order to play with the new stuff, you had to screw yourself for the majority of HoT.

Nerfing the hero points required for elite specs wasn’t a bad thing itself and was only the result of HoT’s foolish design. The mistake they made was requiring nearly all 40 of HoT’s hero challenges (assuming a normal player) and making them group events, which only guaranteed that it would fail and eventually become unplayable in the future. Further requiring 65 points for your core skills would have been a disaster, considering leveling normally from 1-80 is only going to get you about 40. ArenaNet took such an odd turn with HoT, I wouldn’t be surprised if Colin wanted it to fail on his way out to Amazon. They would have been far better off with half the amount at double the points, with them stacked into the earlier maps (20 total, 8 in VB, 6 in AB, 4 in TD, 2 in DS for example). The way elite specs are unlocked also needs to be changed, since if you want to use the new stuff, you’re forced into using empty traits. It should be balanced so traits are first and all unlocked within the first map.

The problem in nerfing the amount required was that it permanently doubled the amount of excess points available. ArenaNet’s going to have to make a choice with the next expansion. They could leave it as is and allow the minority to forever unlock future specs on day 0, further bloat it as they did with HoT, or scrap it and shift to something specific to the expansion.
