Little note on pricing:
The original base game of GW2, as of yesterday, was $20. The Heroic edition was $40 (which is what most people go for anyway).

And no, you do not have to create a new account to play the expansion. You have the option to Link the HoT pre-purchase to an existing account (I’ve already done so), as was the case with GW2’s launch.

The $20 isn’t discounted, that was the price of the base game with no goodies on buy.GW2.com; the Heroic edition with extra goodies was $40, which got discounted to $20 or $10 depending on the discount (50/75%). I think the base game without any goodies also got discounted, but it was usually the heroic edition that people went for.

When the game launched, it was $60 for base game (no extra benefits), $80 for Deluxe, $150 for Collector’s edition. Base and Deluxe editions had both physical and digital versions.

You really are pointing out the right things!

About the price, we have indeed evidence that it is indeed the price for core game+expansion and not expansion only (with free core game).
The proof is that there is no option to buy only the core game now; why would that be? after all, the core game would cost less of the expansion (with free core game). What if someone had not enough money to afford it?
The answer is simple: that is the new standard game, the only way to buy the core game is along with the expansion, meaning that’s the price of the base core AND the expansion.

And, it’s early! Everyone, calm down! There is still time!
Things can still change, so complaining this much is not good.

Wait, for those saying that the base game used to be $20 as of yesterday, I don’t think that’s true (unless it was momentarily on sale or there was an error).

I checked on Monday the price for the game while speaking to a friend about GW2 (specifically June 15th, 2015 at 6:30pm, according to my Steam chat), and for the standard edition it showed $40. I doubt they were selling the game for $20 for 2 days, but I could be wrong.

I don’t see any double speak about it. I don’t foresee a price drop till many months later.

The boxed edition, with no benefits, was $20. At some point, a digital version of it was available, but I guess it wasn’t available on buy.GW2 – but you could still get the basic version from retailers (http://www.amazon.com/Guild-Wars-2-Pc/dp/B001TOQ8X4/ – yes it does say $40 discounted to $20, which Amazon tends to do, but that’s not the Heroic edition). The Heroic edition was the one that was always $40 on buy.GW2.com, the default option people went for, and the one that people went for during sales. The Deluxe edition was also on buy.GW2 for $60 (IIRC).

That was my mistake – there was no $20 digital edition, but there is a $20 boxed edition with no extra benefits.

The wiki lists two previous editions: The DDE (was $80 on launch), which is the current Deluxe edition, and the standard edition ($60 on launch and gave two pre-purchase benefits which were gone after launch).

The Collector’s Edition was limited to something like 10000 copies.

After checking through the forum , I am very disappointed on most of the players of Guild Wars 2 ever since the announcement and pre-purchase were released . First of all , many of you (old players) have proclaimed that the price is unreasonable for old players due to the fact that the price is $50 for the expansion with a free core game provided in the package. This is truly an unforgivable way of forcing players to support the devs IF they really meant to do that , but let’s be clear over here … The prices were CLEARLY stated to be sold for new players who are interested in the game itself, since the original price for guild wars 2 standard edition was $39.99 , and now it’s $49.99 .Which means, the expansion alone costs about $10 in this case. That means there will be another standalone edition for the expansion for the older players to purchase sooner or later.

If you’re thinking how sure can I be , it’s pretty obvious. What would happen if they decided to not do anything about the prices ? They will lose lots of old players and fans (excluding brainless fanboys/girls) compared to the quantity of new players buying the $49.99 package which are estimated to be not even more than 5% of the current
population of old players.

Of course there will be people who are willing to buy the packages without hesitation and overlook the ‘fairness’ of prices for the old players, but is it confirmed that the expansion that players bought will be on their old account ? Since Gw2 has already mentioned that it will include the core game itself when you purchase it. Meaning , you might have to make a new account in-order to play the expansion. If you do not need to make a new account to be able to access the expansion, then Anet will probably come up with a way to replace the core game for players who have already own an existing corr game with something else.

So why not let all of us have faith in them instead of bragging and complaining about it without actually reading and thinking carefully about the outcome ? It’s very bold of those of you thinking that Anet would actually do this kind of thing to us after so many years of playing this game.

Start giving motivations ! Not criticisms!

Sorry, but I’m not paying $50-$100 based on “faith” – I want facts. None of which ANet has provided.

Until they lay out exactly what I’m getting for my money, I’m not buying HoT. When they do that, then I can decide whether I’ll pay for it.

Anything else is just gambling.

Pre-Ordered HoT | Recently started to get what I paid for – may spend $$$

First of all it’s two seperate problem.
One is that expansion comes with free core game.
first, there are people who bought this game not long ago, because anet have being telling people that they will need to purchase the core game to purchase the expansion
second, new players are getting more value out of their money then old players
third, mental illusion? if they didn’t give free core game, but sell core game + expansion for 5-10$ dollars extra, nobody would be complaining, just like nobody were complaining when they selling core game for 10$. people actually willing to pay that much for core game because it’s cheap and anet make more money and no one QQ.

Some will look through it, some will not, but for those who will not, they do have every reason to complain about it, because marketing team failed it’s job? not sure if it is intended.

Second problem, the value within the expansion
Many people question the actually value behold the expansion, we know literally “nothing” about the expansion, people are questioning whether or not it actually worth 50$.

Oh my God…

Please read the other thread where mods replied before posting mindlessly like this…the expansion will cost 50$ NO MATTER WHAT. It won’t, and that’s a fact, go lower than that. The real problem is with the reward new players get, and no reward that the rest of players don’t get.

We can just be patient and see how Arena Net will reply to this. I am 100% sure they will lose thousands of players if everything stays the same as it is now.
