Q:
….. And Elementalist.
Q:
I’m on the fence about HoT, it all depends on what WvW will be like when it’s released.
If I decide too, will there be hard copies to purchase from game stores such as EB games?
The reason I ask this is because buying things online through Guild Wars 2 from Australia, such as $50 worth of gems, actually costs about $70+ after the USD>AUD converts, if the game is going to be $50 in store, then I would much prefer to do that.
Bonus question: Can anyone explain to me why Guild Wars 2 makes us pay conversion rate on sales whereas League Of Legends doesn’t? I honestly have no clue on that one either.
A:
I somewhat doubt that a physical copy of HoT would only be $50AUD. It’s more likely to still cost you around 70AUD, especially from EB who pretty much always overcharge. You also don’t need to buy the expansion using gems, you can just do a straight purchase from the GW2 website.
As for LoL not making you pay conversion, I’d imagine it’s because they actually have an Oceanic server and most probably operate their business quite differently to Arenanet who are specifically located in the US. Just looking at Wikipedia, Riot have offices in St. Louis, Dublin, Berlin, Seoul, São Paulo, Istanbul, Moscow, Sydney, and Taipei. So that is almost certainly why.

That doesn’t explain why the Gem Card costs $15 AUD for 1200 gems, as opposed to ~$20 if using USD/AUD conversion. They used to be sold in stores such as EB, JB HiFi and Game Traders. I got a few from Game Traders back in March-May and (somehow) recently discontinued from July.

Maybe there’s a tarrif on games but not game cards.
One Australian dollar (AUD) is currently worth about 75% of one US dollar.
That price difference you see, where you pay 70 AUD for HoT and US customers pay 50 USD is Arenanet charging you 50 USD for the product, though they list it at 70 AUD for your convenience.
You are paying roughly the same amount as a US customer would for the expansion.
This does not explain the 15 AUD 1200 gem card. I was unable to locate any information on this, except for a 15 USD 1200 gem card. It’s possible the card was discontinued because of that lack of currency conversion.
