HoT End Game? Should I return?

Hey all, I haven’t played in over a year. I had a max level of every profession before I left. The reason I left is that End Game felt weak. As much as games like WoW can be awful, I did enjoy feeling that End Game was constant, and massive with plenty to work towards for casual, and intense players. So I’m currently re-downloading the core game on my PC. Been missing the whole MMORPG thing. So my question is if I should spend some cash and buy Heart of Thorns. How is the end game? Is it worth it? Has it improved since I left over a year ago? Am I wasting my time, and potentially $50?

buy it, it’s worth it. or wait till the HoT upgrade is cheaper.
In HoT there are these things called “meta events” check them out on the wiki.
they’re a lot of fun. also. it comes with it’s own storyline. I havn’t finished that yet.

It is a matter opinion… I personally did not feel like I paid for a fifty dollar game and have been off in other games until a living story update or something… which I will play then return to some other game since I get the feeling it will not have staying power.

PVE : The maps are more complicated to explore but honestly the story for HoT can be cleared in maybe 5 hours… meta events have been to me kinda boring and are not a new feature… they are just more complicated and eat up more time (this may have changed since the last time I actively played the game was in December I think?

WvW was killed off during the original run of HOT however their recent fixes may have remedied that…. so no comment there.

PVP : Cannot comment here as the last time I played this and took it seriously was before the pro game league design focus… however I will say that there are far too few maps for this game type.

But take this as my own personal opinion, because I like you left the game.

I couldn’t get in EB the other day, I often go from <current map> to wvw to LA to avoid paying to travel just because it still amuses me. And it was full for the first time in forever so I’m guessing at least a few people were checking out / enjoying something there.

PvE and new legendaries are fun and the old stuff didn’t stop being fun, population is good, always get fractal groups, see a lot of raid groups but I’d advise joining a guild and getting a metabattle build to raid with. Dungeons are still being run, nice to do aether path again.

Blame Abaddon, he loves your tears.
pve, raid, pvp, fractal, dungeon, world clearing, legendary questing.. Zapped!

Like other said it’s all about opinions. But most people don’t consider that the expansion was worth 50$.

The last big patch did wonder to fix a lot of the problems with HoT but there is still a lot of job to do.

- Open World : The 4 new maps were nice to play. But the way they work, they need some organization and taxing to be nice to play on, which can be a pain and from time to time, they is just no taxi at all so you are stuck on a bad map. Bottom line, they are great when everything work well, but it won’t always be the case.

- Dungeons : They are back with the last patch at least reward wise, but if you found them brain dead, they are worst. It’s nice for now because it’s been a long time since we played them, but we literally explode everything in them right now.

- Fractals : They are in their best shape in a long time. They are rewarding, no more swap overdose, and some of the most annoying and long fractal were modified.

- PvP : Pretty good right now. PvP season are nice, reward are decent and the balance is ok. But you need HoT to be competitive. You can do great without HoT, but it will be harder to do so. (AKA most meta build need the elite spec).

- WvW : I wouldn’t even put a feet in there. They changed the borderlands with HoT and nobody is playing them, they even plan on changing it back to the old maps. They made some change to increase the population balance between server, but we are still waiting on the big WvW update. It could be in 3?, 6?, 9 months? Nobody know. Until then, WvW is pretty weak.

- Raid : People love or hate it. The content itself is one of the best in the game if you ask me. They are challenging, ask for team play, ask you to master your profession and give you some nice mechanics to use. But the organization can be a freaking nightmare. It’s also very hard to practice them until you become good. Pugs ask for experienced players for the vast majority of time and most raid team either disbanded under the pressure or are full. If you are lucky enough to find a guild with place and are ready to show you how it’s done, everything will be alright. Otherwise, it will be hard.

A lot of people talk about most people, but they really don’t know. They can say most people on the forums, but even that’s not clear.

In any event, this summer Living World Season 3 should be coming out and if/when it does it adds to the value of the expansion, because you can’t play it without the expansion. You really can’t continue on with the franchise without the expansion.

Framed in those terms, people might have a different opinion anyway.

To me the expansion was worth it before the patch, but it’s much better after the last patch.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t problems with it. However, I’ve yet to play an MMORPG without problems, or with a forums that’s not mostly complaints.

Suggest you start by playing core for a while and see how you feel.
Difficulty level in HoT is harder than core. That pleases some folks and displeases others.
Gliding is cool, and you can do it all over core maps too.
The auto-loot mastery is probably the most useful in general play. No more picking over dead bodies for your paltry green weapon and 20 copper.

And, yeah, shop around. HoT discounts are out there if you look.

Elite specizalations are a lot of fun

Gliding is a blast

New events for meta in my opinion are fun, but a nightmare to get people and organize them

maps are a bit confusing, really need some work, it’s a pain getting around in my opinion

I’m extremely casual (play 6 to 8 hours a week) and between playing with druid and herald personally had no issues with difficulty overall.

Worth $50? Very much so, you will get more game time out of it then most games.

Wait until the next expac and get all of the content, and imo no the hot expansion is not worth it, they focus far too much on grind and the hardcore insane community..
