HoT Game Day item check-list
On game day, I’m planning to have the following items ready for what will be my new Revenant, the goal being to max the masteries, and enjoy the new content – am I missing anything?
-Full lvl 80 heavy set of armor w/sigs
-Full lvl 80 set of weapons, 2 swords, hammer, mace axe, shield, hammer, staff, and spear w/upgrades
-Full lvl 80 set of trinkets (rings, amulets, accessories, back piece)
for me, a mix of exotic and ascended on the above items depending on time/budget
-a +30 scroll and 50 tomes for insta-80
-Ample food w/15% +exp, ie; spicy pumpkin cookie, omnomberry ghost – you may want to have some RL food ready as well :-)
-Ample nourishment (any anti-Mordremoth potions like the scarlet one?) for the +10 exp
-Four 20-slot bags, probably one of them invisible for my play-style
-My unlimited gather-tools and salvage-o-matic
-Will add boosters to taste (birthday, +experience, etc…)
I would advice against going instant -80.
It will lead to poor understanding of the class. Specially cause there will be no good builds available online yet. So I’m personally going into HoT with a different character and will take (some) time with my revenant. My plan is to get atleast 1 waypoint in each map, do all of the personal story (might skip Zhaitan) and get a good amount of hero-points. Byy doing so I expect to gain enough experience for bout 15 levels, and so saving me 15 tomes. I got the full 50 ready if needed, but just not planning on using them.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
I don’t think you will be able to unlock the Elite Specialization for some time, so you might not need all those weapons right on ‘game day’.
Then, again, maybe you can….just won’t have enough HP to unlock some of the other Specialization lines. I suppose it depends on how many HP an Elite line takes.
Good luck.

Because trying things and figuring them out on your own has no value at all? The only way to learn anything is just just mindlessly follow what other people deem as the best? Also best for what exactly? Because shockingly enough the best build changes depending on what you want to do.
Also your assertion insta leveling will lead to not understanding the profession is faulty. Most of the value of leveling in GW2 comes from learning the systems and how things work and fit together.
Leveling doesn’t inherently teach a profession specifically because there isn’t really any challenge during leveling. You can do whatever and it’ll work. In fact heading out to the new areas quicker will probably teach more about how Rev works because if he’s having a hard time it would tell him he needs to look at things and make changes.

I haven’t seen any indication elite specs will be held back so it stands to reason they’ll be available to unlock as soon as the expansion hits. Leveling to 80 provides enough to unlock all core specs on a profession, but not the elite specs. So he’d either need to not unlock all the core (if he wants Herald immediately) or he’ll need to run around and collect some points out in the world.
But like you point out, we don’t know how much they’ll cost so it’s hard to plan on that side.
I am going to insta-80 my revenant. Not just to escape the grind, but so I can learn the mechanics at 80.

Played beta, know the spec I plan on using and how it functions. I don’t need a carbon copy build taken from some site, I’m more than capable of creating my own. If fact I already have a build link saved that I created.
Insta 80 and start playing.
Like others said insta 80 will only give so many skill points. You will not be able to unlock all traitlines as things currently stand. This is a concern for all other professions. People get x profession to 80 then park it till HOT releases, assuming they can log in and max out their elite. However if you speced in multiple traitlines and utilities you are going to be short
I’ve prepared by doing the following since the day HoT was announced:
Saved all my laurels (Ascended Rings, Amulets, over 200 atm).
Saved all my guild commendations (Ascended Accessories, over 200 atm).
Stockpiled all T6 Mats (Ascended Backpacks, over 500ea T6 atm).
Completed Daily Ascended Crafting (Currently enough mats in the bank for 5 complete sets of ascended armor and at least a half dozen new ascended weapons)
I’ll continue to stockpile until release and then I’ll go on a spending/crafting spree the likes Tyria has never seen.

Insta 80 my rev just for the swiftness buff…. running around the world collecting points without swiftness sounds horrid.
…and I’m starting to collect gear for my old characters I plan on playing in a new way, Condi necro → psy reaper. Bunker gear for my daredevil… stuff like that.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.

Some people learn things differently. For me, I don’t worry about build really until my character approaches 80. Because there’s no real point beforehand.
I personally would say copy & paste builds because someone else deems they are good is just as bad as insta-leveling if not worse. You don’t know why the build is built that way or if it fits your own play style. There’s nothing wrong with the trial and error approach to finding the best build for one’s play style with a class. Which is what the insta-level and the non-copy & paste builders do.
I’m either going to go instant 75, or 80, i played in 3 betas with rev, and i got a good handle on how it works. i got some of the gear ready, but CBA to make ascended armor yet. or maybe i’ll insta 30, and do story missions, so I can make money off the lower material mats, i have plenty of time to decide…but im so lost as to what i want to do.

I have no desire to get all the trait lines right away, ill get what I need and work on the point for the rest later.
Haha! I have the same checklist. All that stuff on your list I have prepped and tucked away for my Revenant on Game Day as well. Cheers, mate! x)
Will update once Path of Fire releases.
Definitely instant 80 on the rev. Will strip my 2nd Guard nekkid and give his gear to the revenant.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
99.9% of us will instant 80. Poor advice to doing anything but. Or masochistic.
Crystal Desert
Instant level 80 here, and if Anet tries to limit tome use, boosters+Edge of the Mists power leveling.
There is no point in spending time learning a profession the slow way using incomplete builds that you would never use at level 80 anyway

Doesn’t it depend on what’s fun for each player? There are all sorts of players who benefit from insta-80 and all sorts who will have a better time leveling up their rev normally.
I dont know if il do this myself, but i found insta 60 is a good way to start a new class. That way you can do map completion in the 60-70 zones, followed by frostgorge and orr, plus some of the ps (if you like that stuff) or just a bit of eotm + crafting to get the last levels. Doing 80 zones on a lvl 70 in greens is a decent challenge to help learn the class, plus the map complete rewards are good at 70+, not to mention its cheap a play around with different gear sets before you have to get exotics at 80.
Ofc thats for a casual pve player. If youre going to jump right into wvw/fractals/ect., no need to wait til hitting 80
Also, to add to your checklist, id add some good hammer/staff/sword skins so you can stand out from the other 1000000 revs on launch day, since skins are almost certainly going to skyrocket in price by then.
