With the excitement of a brand new way to travel, I’ve been analyzing potential ways Anet will implement the new Gliding mechanic. The spoilers we’ve gotten so far is that we’ll be able to trait for such abilities, and be able to ride gusts of wind to travel to new areas. Couple that with the desire to add more challenging content, and you have yourself a brand new type of Jumping Puzzle that will be both fun for pro jumpers, and frustrating for the uncoordinated.

Looking at the mechanics of the popular game Flappy Bird, this is the closest idea that I can see Anet pulling off. As you glide downward, you’ll need to find gusts of upward wind to carry you further. The challenge will be to keep hitting these pockets of “boosts” at the right time to make it through barriers (tree branches and such) to reach chests or other type of rewards. One miss and you’ll need to restart, similar to the Skipping Stones JP in Southsun. But I’m sure it’ll be so high, that Mesmer ports will be impossible for quickie finishes.

So from now until HoT release, we should all start practicing a bit of Flappy Bird. If we can master that, we should be able to have a head start on getting access to all them super secret special areas.

In GW2, Trading Post plays you!

Oh, don’t you even mention THAT game.

I run it when I’m too cheerful and have to balance it out.

No. Don`t even think about tapping buttons even more than we allready have to.
You don`t have to propose a simple dodge mechanic with this game…

That being said, as you suggested, diving and launching yourself back up by using momentum and gusts of wind are great mechanics, that have been used in many games.

Using it to traverse an JP is also very interesting.

The thing you propose has been used in many games already and I would say is true and tested.
Subsequently I hope they are able to get things like this done in engine (which they could just flat out say).

I think the gliding is most interesting.
It opens many doors for all kinds of new game modes like “ride the winds”
The higher you are able to get, using the winds to your advantage, the better the rewards..

Or checkpoint racing

Or a game mode with many dangerous locations and you need to get to a safe drop point..But with the strong winds you’re more likely to end up this way;

I’m thinking more like the glider levels of Sunset Overdrive than Flappy Bird.

In case you can’t tell what’s happening in the video, the power meter on the left drops constantly as you try to fly level or climb, and is refilled by passing over those vents. It’s very forgiving in that game, but I could imagine a much harsher system.

Keep in mind that they’ve also said that at the most basic level there is a limit to how long you can continuously glide, so early JPs might be about gliding from one landing pad to another, while once you master the skills it would make that easier.

you spend complaining about it on the forums, you’d be
done by now.”

For some reason i keep picturing the jax and daxter hang gliding challenge in game three? i think at least, you have to hit gusts of wind to stay up etc, pretty challenging the first time you do it if you dont know where the gusts are, but after that it gets easier. Should be fun i think! except for people like my dad, who have no reflexes what so ever.. Wait this just got even better

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.
