In this post I would like to explain / resolve some of the controversy that’s been going on ever since HoT has been available for pre-purchase, without yelling “entitled” at anyone who does not agree.

I too was originally on the unhappy side of the line, but I recently started seeing the light, and would like to share that light with those that are still on that side.

The problem: We see this new purchase as “missing out” on a potential “free account”, or that we’ll be paying twice for the base game.
Think of it as buying the latest version of the game instead. For $50, new-comers will be getting the most recent version of the game.

Each living story episode will cost them 160 or 200 gems (not sure about the price).
8 stories, with 800 gems costing $10.
8 × 160 = 1280 gems -> buy 1600 gems -> $20

New people will have to pay at least $20 to get access to the “base” game.
That $20 was included in our package way back when.
Let’s say we payed $50 for our original package (can’t remember how much it was).

That leaves $30 difference, which got us Scarlett Briar, SaB, Marionettes, Elections, and whatever else there was.
There is no sense in new members paying this $30, since they will never get that content. They have not been playing for 3 years, so they need not pay that $10 / year “subscription fee”.

It does feel like I’d be better off buying a base + expansion, since I then get a “free vanilla account”, but then my current account would be kind of meaningless, since it’s not the latest version of the game.

I do feel that this “expansion” might be a bit overpriced; for me it’s about 1.5 times the original price, but the economy here might be to blame for that.

I would be happier if the basic upgrade included a new character slot though. To me, revenant is a part of the expansion, but I have to pay extra to access that part of it. This is the only thing I’d really like to change.

I’m posting this as a new topic, which I’m hoping will not be merged, since it’ll otherwise get lost in the sea of complaints.

I hope this cleared some things up. Let me know if I missed anything.

You miss the point where new players pay $50 for core + xpac and existing players pay $50 for just xpac, some of us have only played for just over a month and been misled with false advertising regardless.

Players that bought the game less than a month ago can claim refunds. For those that have played for little over a month, I agree, it sucks.

But we payed $50 to play the game for 3 years, now we’re paying another $50 to play for 3 more years.
New players are therefore also only paying for the next 3 years.

It should not be seen as base + expac, but rather …new base.

Exactly. Not to mention there are many businesses that have loyalty program for loyal customers, and in this scenario, there’s none for veteran players of the game. The least the can do is include a character slot with the introduction of the Revenant class, that would actually make the price of $50 easy to swallow for community.

So by that logic I pay $40 for 1 month and then another $50 for 3 years?
And vets on the other hand paid ~$50 for 3 years and another $50 for ~3 years?

Again, it is unfortunate that you bought the game so recently that you wouldn’t be getting your $40 worth. You could choose to see it as $90 for 3 years, so $30 / year, and $10 / year for vets, resolving the “nothing for loyal players” issue.
But I think ANet should perhaps compensate for players that have been playing for, say, less than a year, or players that bought the game after the HoT announcement.
This I agree with.

You can now wait until the exp is released without paying now to spread the cost over more time. You’re in an awkward situation I’m just trying to find a reasonable solution. Also (I realise you aren’t in this camp) I think they put the original game on sale for £7 during time between the HoT announcement and now.

From what I heard, this is true, but is not the case for many of us, the people who paid that very low price are technically in a different boat imo.

a refunded means you wasted your time. Because you lose your account and progress. Many people would have just waited for HoT had they not told them directly that their would be no point in waiting for HoT.

OP, I have the game since the very beginning, and due to busy real life I missed events and living stories that I had to BUY, not to mention latest living stories of unobtainable season 1. So that is NOT an excuse, its still wrong! Your argument is invalid…

EDIT: …I have supported the game willingly spending $$$ on its gem store and look at the way we are being treated now.

I also missed out on a lot, which I regret, but I had access to it. I could’ve played, and in your case, you only had to log in at a certain stage to get the living stories for free. It only became purchasable much later.

If someone is handing out cake for free for one month, you can’t blame them if you have to pay for showing up two months later.

If you pay to go to an amusement park, but for some reason choose not to go on any of the rides, it’s not the park’s fault. Yes, you might’ve gotten sick in the middle of the day or something, but ultimately it was still you’re decision to stay off.

Another case:
If the park closes at 18h00, and you go at 17h00, it’s unfortunate that you had to pay a full day fee for only an hour’s worth, but that’s how it works.
The park is at fault if they usually close at 23h00, and without telling you suddenly decide to close earlier. I’m sorry that there are people in this boat.

Sorry, don’t want to be rude here, but for serious, this is a very bigger problem than it seens for a single person or player “Resolve”. We either need a Anet official response (After tehy discusse this internally), or a collaborative discussion player-Developers.

Imho, it doesn’t matter whenever i got my old account.
The point is – we’re buying a product that, while related to the old one, is a new product.
And be it old or new players, we’re buying it at the same exact time, place and price.
Yet we’re getting different things. New players get the game and the expansion, old players get just the expansion.
Old players aren’t getting neither the same product or the same value from the purchase, and that’s wrong. Both should be equal, and currently, they aren’t.

Am sure many new comers had the choice to buy the game @ release but didn’t and because they have waited, not participated since the beginning they get a better deal?

Also, supporting the game via gem store should count…big time.

I chose to be there since early access, players joining for the expansion were not…

I have been following the conversations and arguments and whatevers. It is frustrating that ANet seems to be ignoring everyone’s cries.

A lot of people though are on the other side of the argument, and have no issue with this.

I used to imagine them sitting back saying “Let them complain. They’re gonna pay up anyway.”
Now I just see them upset with “We didn’t mean to hurt anyone. sadface”.

I’ll change the name of the thread.

then what you are saying here, is you cannot buy an expansion or an upgrade to your xbox.
they are in fact selling the new Xbox to you, not an upgrade.

and then the other problem with your analogy is that they actually do sell your the parts. they dont give you a new Xbox.

so the third part goes like this
fine, so give me a new Xbox, ill give my old one to my friend, or maybe ill put in the gameroom.
Sorry if you already own the Xbox, you must buy the xbox parts at the cost of the new xbox in order to make use of your xbox live account and games.

They’re offering the xpac with the base game to basically say “hey you can get the original game AND the xpac so you can get some more bang for your buck” this game isn’t sub based, they need to be able to keep getting new players in so they can keep their income from ebbing to the point they can’t stay afloat. you are right, they know that heart of thorns to a new player is not worth 50 bucks alone. They know that a guild wars player places a higher value on HoT. The miscalculation may have been how much of a higher value does the core player place on it.

as well as pricing it at 50 for the standalone makes the core player crystalize the value of both together.

No matter how you slice it, its bad marketing. They should have had the combined game at 60 and the expansion at 40, if only to maintain the illusion that the base game was worth 60.
truth is most of their money is going to come from people who already purchased, they should have built their marketing strategy around older players perceptions of things, rather than new players.

they can give a discount on the combined game later. It would have been better to have 30% of new players waiting for a discount than have 30% of old players waiting for a discount, since they have probably gotten most of the new players they are going to get by now.

There are folks who have waited until the Base game became more affordable to them! 6 months to a year or two. Where are you on this? Why are you not demanding more Perks as Vet? They’re offering the xpac with the base game to basically say “hey you can get the original game AND the xpac so you can get some more bang for your buck” this game isn’t sub based, they need to be able to keep getting new players in so they can keep their income from ebbing to the point they can’t stay afloat. I’d say they should probably just have some kind of compensation since everyone’s making such a big fuzz over this…

you are right, they know that heart of thorns to a new player is not worth 50 bucks alone.

I agree, I never said it was a good business move but I was just getting annoyed that people were just immediately getting kitteny over this rather than atleast trying to understand Anet’s rationale behind it.

im not really attacking you, im just saying they apparently guessed wrong on the percieved value of the expansion for older playersers

Oh I wasn’t taking it as an attack phys, I was agreeing with what you said and was just saying why I’d worded it the way I did

Honestly I just want everything I’ve paid for with the HoT expansion (even if it’s “free”). I got my nifty serial code to upgrade my existing account. Where’s my serial code for a new base game account? Because if I don’t get that I’m not getting the base game included in the package.

Since they view it as a pre-purchase bonus for new players, they don’t consider it content that existing players are paying for or needing. They view it as you paying $50 for HoT alone.

Those that purchased the game after Anet insinuated they needed to should get more than a refund. It is not the same as them saying “oh there’s an expansion coming out that MIGHT require me to purchase the game, I think I’ll go buy it”.

They purchased it because that is what it appeared they were being told needed to happen. They shouldn’t lose their progression, gem purchases, names, and whatever else they have acquired based solely on the fact that Anet is pretty bad at communicating.

its not a prepurchase bonus, they will not be selling the core game any more. Its the new version of the game. They only want to sell one version of the game going forward. the prepurchase bonus parts are the minis and whatnot.

they are basically saying their is no upgrade, just buy the new game and you can use your old save data.

this is true, but since anet has no backbone set up to be able to handle this type of transaction, they will probably just say forget those guys.

Totally agree with this. I just don’t understand the logic of forcing well-deserved refunded accounts to completely start over.

Sad but true, it really is sad what large companies try and do get away with at the expense of the little guy now adays.

And that folks for all of you haters is the real big picture for some behind all of this rage. You might not agree with it now, but at some point in your life your going to get screwed by big business, and at that point you’ll be happy someone is sticking up for you or wishing someone was sticking up for you.

the only real solution they can offer, is if they actually had an expansion only version for less. It would be inline with what they told the players would happen. Although some people wouldnt have gotten the best deal (those who paid 40) but they wouldnt be able to say they were lied to.

And yet the store page specifically states when buying HoT that it “includes Guild Wars 2 core game”. It does not say that existing customers will only get HoT. Is it wrong to ask for everything in the package I paid for?

People fail to see that all veterna players wanted was some small addition like:
- character slot, so we can actually create new class there that is added with HoT
- 800 gems, better idea even because there are people who don’t want slots anymore so atleast they would buy some skin or outfit.

That’s all, entire drama would be resolved by just adding one of those options for veteran players. Done.

The problem: We see this new purchase as “missing out” on a potential “free account”, or that we’ll be paying twice for the base game.

No. that’s not the problem. the problem is $50 is too much for a small xpac.
