If you didn’t buy it off of an authorized retailer (the only authorized digital retailer is ArenaNet/NCSoft afaik). Then you are out of luck.

Otherwise you would have been covered by their refund policy and their recent promise to help users who recently (presumably 30 days) purchased the core game to migrate it to HoT pre-purchase.

People have got to stop with this complaining already!

If you type in /age and have more then 100 hours total play time you should not be allowed to complain. $50 is not a lot of money. Just get it if you want it, just simply don’t get it if you dont want it. Every single person on the forums doesn’t need to read about every person who won’t buy it, just don’t get it

I’m all for new players being able to get into the base game and the expansion at a decent price. New players grow the community and energize the existing player base by having new people unfamiliar with parts of the game to share their existing knowledge with and guide through harder content like PvP or high level Fractals. I’m all for new players.

However, I really really REALLY wish that Arenanet would already realize that their game grows more popular with a dedicated base of player to evangelize to those that don’t play. You keep a dedicated base of players by respecting their time invested in your product and money spent. By money spent I mean both the base game and gem purchases. I have 3000+ hours on my account. I’ve spent hundreds on gem purchases over the 3 years I’ve been playing. I have purchased 8 character slots for the 8 classes, extra bank tabs, bank stack upgrades, finishers, skins, toys, miniatures, premium dyes, home instance nodes, played the completely GARBAGE RNG game for black lion skins AND WHAT IS MY REWARD FOR 3 YEARS OF CONTINUED LOYALTY BOTH TIME AND MONETARY?

The exclusive opportunity to pay $60 for a sliver of content.

This battered spouse is moving on. Take care of yourself Arenanet.

You got something.. You got to keep the game for 3 years without a sub and free living stories throughout the 3 years without being forced to pay.

If you are weak for cosmetics from the gem store, at the time you paid for something you valued.

Don’t use your past contributions to justify the new Xpac. You made those decisions based on what you valued at that time.

Like I said, the Xpac is $50. and new players get the core game for free as bonus.

Someone who never experienced the game is saving $10… whats the big deal.

Okay let’s change the angle:
What happens before doesn’t matter right ?
So why new player should have the core game for free ?

Who said “what happened before doesn’t matter”. I said don’t justify what you think the price should be based on your past contributions, ie. if you bought gems.

The game is worth 10 dollars, based on the lowest sale point, and depreciation for the past 3 years. But Anet has chosen to give it to new players for free.

If you are weak for cosmetics from the gem store, at the time you paid for something you valued.
Don’t use your past contributions to justify the new Xpac. You made those decisions based on what you valued at that time.

So what I valued during these three year, doesn’t justify the XPAC.
Okay fine.

But new player that didn’t value the game at all get it for free in deal with the Xpac?

You still don’t see where this is wrong ?

Customer retention is the activity that a selling organization undertakes in order to reduce customer defections.
Successful customer retention starts with the first contact an organization has with a customer and continues throughout the entire lifetime of a relationship.

A company’s ability to attract and retain new customers, is not only related to its product or services, but strongly related to the way it services its existing customers and the reputation it creates within and across the marketplace.

From wikipedia.

Anet pulled a m****finger on every veteran with that move.

I won’t even dwelve into the FAQ situation because this one is litteraly a breach of trust. We are supposed to believe what written in these by a company but Anet just changed before a major annoucement.

This two things together will naturally upset a lot of veterans.

Does it suck for people who recently bought the game that the core version comes as standard for free? Yeah, but if it’s a stand alone disc that means you can create a new account for inventory mules, that’s what I’ll be doing if it’s the case since my 8 chars and fully upgraded personal guild bank is fulled to the brim.

Except that’s not what we’re getting. If I got a third account from the purchase, I’d be fine.

As it sits, I just feel like there needs to be one more desirable feature, such as a character slot (seriously ANet, how do you up the profession count and not make that a basic feature….) and I’d have absolutely no complaints. Or a $10 discounted version that’s just an “upgrade” for existing accounts.

I’m not going to fuss because I know I’m going to buy it anyway, but I will say I feel like they handled this badly. I know the fact this deal kind of sucks is going to be old news sooner than later. It’s just that they could have made this more palatable with very minor changes.

They won’t change it this time but maybe in the future.

If I was ANet PR I’d take the free core version out and tweet “There, are you happy now?”

Yes new players are getting for free what we already payed for, but they’re also starting from scratch.

The problem in here is that ANet is giving away for free the core game, but hey, people have always complained with all the free stuff they got so far so hearing them complain other people are getting free stuff is no surprise.

What everyone needs to realize is the expansion is (hopefully) worth the price they’re asking for, don’t worry if ANet is giving away for free a game that’s 3 years old now.

Just to clarify, I really don’t care if they give the base game away to new people if the xpac itself represented a better value. There’s just not $50 worth of content and goodies here.

$40 would be perfectly fair. $50 with a char slot would be perfectly fair. And again a year from now I’m not going to care, I’m just pointing out this isn’t really a good price for what we’re getting.

Value is subjective, I get that. Some people aren’t going to agree with me, that’s fine. I’m just saying I wanted one more little doodad at the $50 price point.

It doesn’t matter I’ve already saved the money for it months ago, it’s just this isn’t a good value.

I am realy hyped about HoT but i feel like i wont get my money worth of it. What i mean is that the packages that we have at the moment include the expansion PLUS the actual game and i dont like this. For us older players this is unfair because we have already payed 50$ for the original game and now we have to pay 45 more for a package that already includes the game. The problem is that older players have to pay for something that they already have and this is a waste of money. I realy hope we get the HoT expansion separately from the real game for a reasonable price because paying kitten for such little bonus content (compared to the real game that was only 5$ more and had much more content) is a rip off. Ofcourse its more fair for new players but for us old players it is not.

When you paid $50 for the base game, you bought it brand new. After 3 years of deprecation, the game as hit its lowest selling point of $10. 3 YEARS! ($10 is still impressive)

We have to accept $50 is the price of the XPAC, for now. And it would be hard to give EVERYONE a FREE character slot.. that’s like 4 million slots to hand out, imagine the costs of servers and maintenance, utilities, electricity just to uphold that.

I’m sure they have more to release about the Xpac, new content etc… MAYBE a huge surprise towards the official release.

For veterans the standard and deluxe options make little to no sense. The only real option is $100 for the ultimate which is a pretty stiff purchase considering the weight of the expansion. By creating a fourth option for just the expansion at a price range around $30 players like myself who have families and lives outside of gaming can afford the release without having to worry.

The white knights can flame this thread all you want, but I know most players were expecting the expansion to be around the $30 range. It’s a fair price considering what’s to be included in HoT.

By including the game in $50 for new players a new player gets the expansion, 5 character slots, the original game, and 2 bank slots.

At current gem store prices five character slots and two bank slots is roughly 5200 gems or around $65 USD.

A new profession is being added, which just about everyone who has been playing will likely want to make. But, because of the way this is packaged for established players the established player has to pay an additional 800 gems / $10 USD if they want to have a slot open to play the new class, or they have to delete a character that they’ve put time / effort / possibly gems / gold into.

This is why it seems like a money grab.
The disparity between what $50 buys a new player and what $50 buys an established player is tremendous.

THIS. Thank you.

I can’t see why people keep saying “Price is fair! Vets, stop being greedy!” It has nothing to do with vets not wanting to support the game, because we do, but it has everything to do with unfair pricing for vets and those who had already purchased the game prior to today.

Vets paid $60 for the base game. The base game now is currently $40. I don’t have a problem here, the price of the game goes down over time to bring in more players. That’s all good. The $10 pricing on those 2 sales isn’t a problem for me either. They’re sales. The issue is with the actual price of the expansion.

New players now can pay $50 for the base game and expansion, but vets have to pay an additional $50 on top of the cost of the base game to get the expansion. At minimum, vets must pay $90 for their expansion, and at maximum (and in my case) had paid $60 for the base game, and that purchase now totals $150 to get the expansion

Let’s put things in perspective:
Total Cost for New Players to buy the Game + Expansion = Minimum $50
Total Cost for players prior to today buy the Expansion = Minimum $90 or $150 (at $60 or $40 initial purchase, respectively).

Yeah, things like having played free living story additions wasn’t enough. I gotcha.

That was enough. That was what they promised.
They promised there wouldn’t be pay gated content.
Monies made from gems was supposed to fuel additional content.
a paid expansion inherently goes against these promises… I’m not getting what I paid for in the first place. Which I could look past, until I got shafted.

Give me as a vet something, it doesn’t have to be much. For me 2400 gems would be sufficient (which is only equivalent to 3/5 character slots a new players would get). Do that and I’ll gladly buy the super ultimate edition. Hell even an exclusive cheeso mini or skin or something for vets would’be been fine.

100 hours justifies what’s allowed to complain and what isnt?

So when GoW3 released a 7 hour game for $60 that’s acceptable? How many other examples are there?

Imo the people with more than 100 hours are where the true opinions need to be addressed and respected, as these are the people who buy gems (by choice) to support GW and their projects. People who just barely play a game don’t do those things.

The complaining, true, is excessive. I think they have plenty of information now to realize how and where they kittened up here. I am looking forward to seeing if they bother responding in an appropriate way or if they’ll basically say “kitten these guys we aren’t changing anything” or just silently fix it without a word and hope that’s acceptable (which is isn’t).

For what it’s worth, I will be buying the ultimate one. (Just so people don’t make assumptions about where I fall)

As others have said many times: I also believe that the price for the expansion is too high, especially when the included base game does not come with a separate key to activate a new account, and also does not include a character slot (or anything else for that matter). These things alone, which don’t actually cost Anet anything to add, would have at least made the offer more justifiable.

Those issues aside, I will also add that the content appears to be a glorified living world season, which happens to add a ton of grind in the form of per-character masteries, while pursuing storylines that relatively few players liked and virtually nobody asked for more of. Anet is also using the expansion to gate a feature that should have been in the base game or at least in a content patch, which is of course the guild halls/gvg. Anet also reduced the game’s most prominent “prestige” system, legendary crafting, to paying $50 for the skin, no better than a gold buyer.

Meanwhile, the expansion content that people actually did ask for – Cantha, Elona, and anything related to the dangling storylines from GW1 – are still no closer to realization. The funny thing is, if Anet had done everything the same with this expansion but replaced the sylvari-centered Guild Wars Vietnam content with Kaineng City, I would be hard-pressed not to pre-order or make this a day 1 purchase in spite of the other faults. As it is, the lackluster content combined with the sense that I’m being double-charged for something that should have been in the game at launch means that I feel no pressure at all to buy this expansion, because I’d sooner quit the game than deal with the consequences of community fragmentation. As it is, I already barely log in for anything more than doing dailies.

So even as Anet rakes in the profits from this release, they should understand that their choices for the direction they took this game are still costing them real money, and that whatever amount they make from HoT, it could have been higher had they spent the last 3 years making an honest effort to please longtime fans instead of exploring the boundaries of what they could get away with. This expansion just feels like the latest probe to see exactly how low the nu audience’s standards are, and I have no intention of competing with them for Anet’s attention. The current Steam sale has now put my backlog at over 300 games, so even as far as my free time goes, I’m too effing busy to have to put up with nonsense like this.

I’m in exactly the same boat as you Butsu.

I have almost never posted on the forums, but this recent decision has me scratching my head feeling very conflicted. I played GW1 since the beginning and happily jumped into GW2, even buying a new computer just for the game. The game has given me hours of enjoyment and I have more than got my money’s worth. I was planning on buying HoT no questions, right up until this announcement.

There are lots of those people telling veteran players to stop complaining, but the reason we’re complaining is because this is just such a change from what we are used to. You explained it well regarding GW1 Butsu, so HoT seems like a shock as a result.

Whereas I’ve always backed Anet 100%, after this decision, I really am stepping back and will not be buying HoT or even continuing to play GW2 as I’m so put off.

Leakk

P.S. – Pre-purchase before a release date and all content has even been announced? That’s another massive change from what series veterans are used to.

2. You’re not getting an extra account when you buy the expansion. The expansion itself costs $50 for everyone. If you don’t have an account, purchasing the expansions gives you one for free. If you already have an account, purchasing the expansion will just upgrade it.

It’s not the price. It’s the fact that two groups of customers have to pay the same price for something with promotional benefits. One group get to enjoy that benefits while the other can not. Worse, it’s because the other group already paid for it.

If the promotional benefits are more universal and both group can enjoy them, this wouldn’t be a problem in the first place. In this particular case, it even feels like Anet is backstabbing old players. You give things that new players can use while old players practically get nothing.

You can say it’s just $50 dollar all you want. That doesn’t fix the problem. Because the problem is NOT the price.

No. Nothing is free. This isn’t the 1950’s. We all know buy one get one free, is really pay double for one, and the illusion of the second free.

Your customer’s aren’t stupid. If the new player’s aren’t paying for it, then the veterans are.

If its truly free then make the core game free to download now. Or more realistically give vets a second account key with purchase of HoT to do with as they please.

Hi, this is my first post on the forum ever, I do not often come to GW2 Forum since it tend to be the place of hate and toxicity. And I was right. Putting that aside, I want to voice some thoughts on the issue that is raging across Reddit, GW2 forum and all the big maps in GW2 atm. HoT price. Please keep in mind if you gonna reply to this thread, be mature and present valid argument, not just blind hate or fanboi loves. And before I even started I want to make it clear that I DO NOT support either side since I think both sides are in the wrongs.

Now, let talk about the people hating on the expansion first; mostly the veterans who been playing the game since launch. I, myself, am a veteran too. I have been playing since beta days back when the mini map was round and animations were crappy, etc. I also bought the game really early and later upgraded to DELUXE version just to support the developers. So I do understand the frustrations and disappointment the core players have on ANET. However, I do not support the entitlement some players think they have. At the end of the day, no one force you to buy the expansion. The price is indeed audacious, and voicing your opinions is cool and all but also keep in mind, ANet did provide us with 2 years of free contents with no sub fee. And yes you can argue that the season 2 you have to buy if you missed out on the 2 weeks period, but then you would be wrong. Because you CAN get it for FREE by converting gold to gems. So yes, the moment you bought GW2 you can literally get anything for free, provide you put in some time to grind or just play the game and let it happen naturally.

Now, to the white knights and fanbois. While some of you present valid argument, some of you fail to put into account that lot of people buy games based on the content and value they provide. And HoT DOES NOT have a value of $50. You can say that there will be more content available in the future, but the practice of asking players to preorder without even a release date is just insulting on ANet part. I will use GW1 expansion as an example, even the most recent expansion of GW1 which is like 7 years ago, priced at $39 still offer more value than HoT. And before you say “But you need to take into account the inflation of the dollar”; mind you, the dollar actually have more value than it does 7-8 years ago since the economy is stable now. (Source: Economic Minor 2nd year, Did a Currency Evaluation and got an A- for my project last Spring) So, please justify to the players who dissatisfied with the audacious $50 price mark that HoT has more value than GW1 Expansions which come with 2 Free character slots, a minimum of 8-10 new maps, 2 professions, etc.

Now, the damage has been done. ANet will never revert the price and the best we could hope for is for them to add a free character slot at MINIMUM to the standard pack. Since the fanbois already preorder so reverting the prices is not possible and will be unfair to them. That my thoughts on the situation, everyone got their own opinion, just respect them and move on with your life. Steam summer sale is going on and GW2 is not the only game in the world. If you feel like $50 is not worth it, I got some recommendation that will be well worth that $50:
+Dark Souls series which is on sale atm will get you a minimum of 150hrs for just $30.
+Witcher 3, best RPG game I ever play in my life. And I have play all the Elder scrolls game, Ultima, Baldur Gate. Logged 197hrs into it already (Spent all the time off works playing it). And that just within 1 month. While it took me 2 years to logged 700 hrs into GW2 so the value of Witcher 3 far surpassed GW2 for me atm.
+GTAV will give you a minimum of 100hrs guarantee.

I could go on but you got my point, do not buy the expansion if you think it is unreasonable and just move on with your life. Stop hating on everything. Devs gotta eat. Is $50 reasonable? No. But that the price ANet decided that their product gonna cost. And ANET has 10000 times less class than CDPRED so do not expect them to listen to the core players like CDPRED did since they have to answer to the big daddies upstair too, so understand that for them. And if you decide to buy the expansion, thank you. You keep the game going.

So let me get this straight. For $50 a new player gets GW2 with five character slots and HoT. For the same $50 i get just HoT.

How does ANet expect us to not be furious about this?

The 50 dollars you paid for your 5 character slots on the core game is now worth 10 – 40 dollars. So why should you be compensated further after playing the game for 3 years. What game compensates users after 3 years of a one time purchase? You’re lucky they didn’t create a new game altogether.

If its truly free then make the core game free to download now. Or more realistically give vets a second account key with purchase of HoT to do with as they please.

Exactly right. Well said.

Most of people isn’t whining about the content, Morfedel. Most of people -specially vets- are whining the WRONG decission that Anet took with the Basic Edition. Vets want to buy HoT without the ‘core’, which would mean $10 less. Or, at least, to get something for justifying this overcost -like a character slot, for example.

Its really just that simple.

Seriously. If you are so bitter about it, why are you even still here? go find another game you’ll enjoy more and stop being such a sour lemon.

Probably because they care about the game but have different kinds of issues with the recent announcement. I have a question for you: If you’re ok with everything about it why do spend your time writing this comment and insult people in an objective discussion (at least most of them do) which just express some different kinds of objective critique? You could instead contribute something constructive or let those, who want to discuss, discuss.

I said 100 hours because in this day an age most 60 games can be beat under 50 hours. If you can get 100 hours or more out of a game with no subscription fees you already have your monies worth.

But that isn’t a good reason to buy an expansion which will quite possibly give you less than 50 hours. And for all the $60 games that can be beat in under 50 hours, there are $15 indie games and free to play games with hundreds of hours of play time.

Yeh, I kinda put money into the gem store, enough to consider it a sub, your free argument has no power here.

In a post titled TANSTAAFL which will likely be merged:

“To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.” -Regina Buenaobra
Content Marketing Team Lead

So many kudos for the Larry Niven reference. Mods, please leave the all-caps title alone, it’s a classic acronym that needs to be in caps.

Though I think TANJ might be more along the lines of the general thrust of your post

The thing is, I think they just phrased it poorly. The price is what it is (and is ten to twenty dollars pricier than I expected) and they decided to bundle in the core game for those who need it. TANSTAAFL applies to the fact that we have to pay for the expansion, not to the inclusion of the core game — likely coding was easier this way than to do split up package variations.

If you wanna play a deserted game. Offer Anet to ban all veterans. Obviously you don’t understand the concept of customer loyalty.

You can say it’s just $50 dollar all you want. That doesn’t fix the problem. Because the problem is NOT the price for me.

How did your marketing team miss this? HOW?

FTFY Because for some of us, the $50 entry fee IS the problem. The rest of it just worsens the base issue.

Hell even an exclusive cheeso mini or skin or something for vets would’be been fine.

you know, that really made me laugh out loud for real. I don’t recall them saying they would never have gated content, but I’ll admit I’m not sure. Perhaps you can link a quote for me.

But even so, I’ve been playing since beta, and as time progressed, I witnessed more and more people get more and more agitated for a “real” expansion.

So now they are getting one, and now other people like you are complaining because it costs money.

I’m pretty certain that the gem store was intended to replace monthly subscription fees, and things like the living story, not to fund an entire new expansion.

And you know what? It might be a tiny bit pricey, but not by much. Most expansions for most MMORPGS have run the $40-$60 range, so from a price standpoint the expansion is right in the middle. The only question is, does it provide adequate content?

And until we see something beyond beta, we really aren’t going to be able to answer that. Neither the fans nor the detractors can claim either way without proof. But I’ve been happy with MOST of what ANET has done, so I have faith I’ll find this satisfactory.

I’m going to be honest : for 50 buck I expect HoT to have AT LEAST 80% of the amount of content the core game already has.
If the core game was valued 60 bucks 2.5 years ago then we SHOULD get a lot of content in this expansion.

As far as we know, the expansion contains:

- Guild halls (shouldn’t even count that as content to be honest)
- New zones that we absolutly don’t know anything about nor the amount of content they contain
- Specializations
- New WvW map
- New PvP map/mode

What else?
Not sure I listed everything but 50 buck seem to be a really high price for that, can’t really believe Anet when they say the 50 don’t include the core game. I feel like it is a sad excuse but I could be wrong.

Anyway that’s just my opinion. Die hard fans, calm down go buy the expansion for yourself, that’s great. And YES we are spoiled kids, you are TOTALLY right.

Then do not get it but i have a feeling ppl who post over and over saying it is to much are likely to get it becuse it IS worth 50$ to them they are just trying to cut a deal.

We all do calculation of what a $ is worth to use and how we should use it but when we complain about something being too much this means we want it and feel that the cost is worth the amount pay but we are trying to get that price cut to make it better. Its simple haggling.

That and you simply do not know every thing in it yet so… ya hold off on buying it.

It probably is worth it. In fact if you buy gems anyway (like most of us do) you may as well get the $100 version and you will get some free stuff with the gem purchase. What I object to is the fact that we are proven loyal customers and anet is giving new players (who may or may not buy gems/bring in other plays/etc) a better deal and thereby alienating their existing base.

So they can sell a digital deluxe upgrade in the Gem store but not the expansion as a upgrade to current players?

I don’t buy it. And won’t be.

Sounds like the NCsoft execs in their Monkey suits are calling the shots. I -know- Anet has no control over the price since they only develop the game.

Like I said before NCsoft is the puppeteer and Anet is always under their control. Do not blame ArenaNet and it’s developers for this pricing abomination.

If they do not change the pricing structure I will be content not playing the expansion.

Still feeling like this is a money grab.

Still no official word from Anet.

So I’ma still speak out against you.

p.s. can the anet employees please stop posting under their other accounts trying to spin this. We’re not stupid and can totally pick you out of the crowd. kthxbye
