You guys should compare WoW expansion reveal to HoT, or even ff14 heavensward. Most of MMORPG are vague about their expansion too, there are no weekly live stream about the content neither weekly detailed blog post. Just check wow MoP reveal page, all they did are listed features and a very short portion of the reveal video and that’s pretty much it. How much more do you guys want? Anet won’t tell you every detail neither but that’s the same with every game expansion ever. People are having ridiculous expectations and it bothers me.

Obvious is seeing a thread called “Don’t Pre-Purchase Heart of Thorns” and whilst reading it, you see a post which starts off by saying:
“This thread is now the top-upvoted thread of all time in /r/Guildwars2.”

You like that? With one fell swoop they’ve got themselves the top upvoted thread of all time. I bet they wished to hell and back that the OP’s title was:

Game companies exist on trust. If a poster or player purchases a game product with scanty information, they are doing so based on their trust that the company will deliver value for money. ANet has lost the trust of some of their fans.

The reasons vary, and range from disaffection with choosing to appease one demographic at the expense of another, to dislike for the Gag Order. ANet also does things that make me think no one in a position to influence policy has a clue about how fans will react to some of their decisions, or in some cases to the way they word releases.

Finally, if Blizzard fans are trusting them over an expansion, it’s probably because they have a track record of delivering certain things. ANet’s track record with campaigns and expansions is with the original GW, and there is almost nothing left of that company in the current ANet — or at least that’s how it seems to some. The only things we have to judge HoT by are the scanty info provided and the LS releases. For some, neither are good signs.

you can pick any brand new game in JBHIFI…

Correct.

I live in Australia.

Due to the current Aussie dollar conversion rates against the US dollar I will be paying ~$35 MORE for this expansion (Ultimate edition)

You know those movies where all the best parts are in the trailer? That’s what people are suspecting in this case. Particularly since Anet is usually not shy about (over) hyping the amount of content they put out. What they decide to show compared to other companies is just a function of their style of promotion.

In the end, buy it if you think it’s worth $50, and wait for the inevitable sale if you don’t. There’s no need to get angry about the asking price. (The “bait-and-swith” thing is a different issue altogether.)

FUN FACT TIME:

… You would have enough money to buy the Ultimate edition, even if you only wanted the standard version.

I just briefly glimpsed over the official announcement date(s) and most specify 24th January 2015.

Since then it’s been around 149 days, correct me if I’m wrong, haha.

So that’s $149 total @ $1 per day saved since that date.

Ultimate edition is $99.99 USD (pretty much ~$135.00 AUD)

You’d have enough money to buy x 1 of any available editions.

Is there anyone else who saved some form of money since the announcement for this expansion?

I’m still waiting on any further details before buying, just in case!

I have enough to buy it, but out of moral integrity I will not support greasy business practice. Guess a game isnt worth that much to me.

It’s absolutely blowing my mind how much hate Anet is getting for this. Seriously, think about this for more than a second before you flip your desks.

The expansion is $50, period. GW2 came out nearly three years ago and has been giving us content ever since that we did not have to pay a dime for. If you spent real money in the gem store, than that is on you and has no merit in your argument. Paying for a substantial update once in three years is more than fair.

Now with that in mind, the base game coming with it is FREE!!! It’s not adding on to the price of the expansion. It makes complete sense to have the content you need in order to play the expansion to come along with it. Look at other franchise’s expansions for example. Every expansion that comes out for WoW comes with all the previous expansions. It would turn off many new players if they have to buy every version seperately of the game in order to get the new one. While GW2 is still young in its expansion life, this principle still holds true.

And for those that are saying they just recently bought the game and feel shafted now… If you already knew an expansion was coming out, surely you knew you were going to be paying for it? The game is still months away, and the fact that they mention ahead of time that it’s including the base game is beneficial to players coming in from here on out. Sucks that your timing was bad, but that is not Anet’s fault. You are just in the same boat as ever veteran that adopted the game long ago, and were also ready to pay for an expansion.

The amount of entitlement I’m seeing is really upsetting. I’ve always considered the GW community one of the best in MMOs. This wailing is starting to tarnish that outlook. I feel like the tons and tons of free content they have given so far has spoiled many.

I’ll probably get flamed for this post, as it’s unpopular, but I wanted Anet to hear from both sides of the “issue.”

Well I won’t pretend to speak to everyone, but simply saying how many new maps and new dungeons/fractals there will be for me would do quite a bit to ease my mind, and I just mean bare-bones info really. I don’t need to know every single detail about the expansion. If it seems to have enough content from that, even without details I’d probably pre-purchase the expansion. The core game cost 50$ at release and since then countless things like wardrobe, fractals HotM, Living Story, Guild missions, etc. have been added.

They added enough content to fill a whole expansion without anyone needing to pay extra…unless they missed episodes of the LS.

So…why exactly are people complaining about the price for an expansion they barely know anything about while completely ignoring the probable addition of new content after HoT’s release?

If you go to McDonalds and they say the cheeseburger is 20 dollars would you buy it? No? Why, you can save up 20 bucks in no time! Don’t be so cheap!

Seriously, the issue is not that people can’t afford the expansion. The issue is that it’s value might or might not be justified. I work a mediocre job and can afford the Ultimate no problem, but here’s what’s actually stopping me from preorder:

1. It’s too long overdue. My guild is barely active and I myself lost pretty much all interest in the game in the past 6-8 months.

2. The stubborn refusal from Anet to include proven, loved and desired game modes such as Guild vs Guild, Hall of Heroes, Underworld, Fissure of Woe, Elite Missions, Alliance Battles, Fort Aspenwood, etc. Heck, they wouldn’t even re-add stuff that’s already made and the community loved such as the Marionette, The Scarlet ship breach, the Molten Facility dungeon (the fractal doesn’t count).

3. We don’t know what the new maps will be like but chances are they will be similar to Dry Top and the Silverwastes. In other words, really good for the first dozen of playthroughs until you realize you need to run them hundreds and hundreds of times to beat the rng and get the reward you want. Plus, the emphasis on gimmicks such as gliding and mushroom jumping is not my cup of tea.

4. The lack of character slot in the Standard edition is a really low move. They know PERFECTLY well that the majority of people will have to buy a slot to play the new class thus giving them more cash.

5. No info on new dungeons? Seriously? But every week there is a new outfit, mini or magic carpet.

Of course there are lots of positives as well. Finally, conditions will be viable, the elite specs look tasty, the environment looks as gorgeous as ever, Stronghold, while not being as good as Fort Aspenwood IMO still seems like a fun mode, the new WvW map on paper looks really intriguing, etc.

So yeah, 50 dollars is not too much, just have to see if it’s justified.

Other games have no bearing on how I spend my money in this game, and I have dropped quite a bit on gems. That’s because I felt that was value for money.

Charging $50 for HoT means I need to make a decision with information of what the expac contains that I currently have. It looks a bit light to me. I would probably pay it, but then they do not include a character slot, giving me the distinct impression that’s it a cynical attempt of hitting their customers for another $10.

Considering that means you can’t fully experience the content that you just paid for (and thought pricey to begin with) I will hold off on purchasing and see how this develops.

They are adding
New race
3 New jobs
Flying mounts for aerial expansion area
plethora of new dungeons
New raids
A bulk of new story
level cap increase (new skills and traits for all classes)
New primal encounter
etc etc
And the price tag on Heavensward isnt even as high as HoT but players know what they’re getting and certainly not throwing a fit about the $40 price tag.

Folks havent seen much of HoT compared to HW. So its completely logical that everybody isnt just throwing their money at the screen.

Now what I’d like to see explained without a whole lot of blatant bs, is how people keep trotting out that tired old chestnut about how if we’re a vet, then we’ve had opportunity to content that newbs won’t get, rada rada rada….And that justifies us paying the same for a copy of the exp without a slot, while it also justifies a newb getting a copy of vanilla for free. A game all vets be it a week or a beta vet paid for.
So getting to it, if we’re paying retroactively for the content they’ve given us in the meantime (It doesn’t, the gem store paid for that, and the exp’s creation), but the new player is paying for the copy of gw2 vanilla…
That doesn’t work. No business model without a contract binding the end buyer into such a scheme requires a person to pay retroactively for content. Furthermore, newbs do not get charged retroactively for content they’ll never see, content that keeps getting trotted out as if we still owe for it.
It also doesn’t work because a new player should not get for free a copy of a vanilla game that we paid good money for. I see no sign of gw2 vanilla going f2p, so there is a fiscal component there. Obviously.

So who’s paying for what? Are we all paying retroactively for content some will never see, or are we all floating the newbs a free copy of gw2?

No matter how you look at it, the perspective that vets owe a single bloody thing for past content is farcical, farcical like it is to expect a new player to pay for it also and never see it. Just as farcical as expecting veteran players to float anonymous new players a copy of gw2, “Just to help get them into a game”. If I was going to float anyone a copy of vanilla, the one we should be able to pare off of the exp; the “Free copy” that aNet claims exists, but disappears if you activate HoT on an old account, I’d give it to someone I actually know.

They feel shafted because the wording of the original FAQs page indicated the base game and HoT would be 2 separate purchases and it isn’t. It’s a one-time purchase for both games that the vast majority would have waited to buy together if they’d had any indication of that possibility at all.

Many ways out this mess they made:

- Perks for the players that ALREADY had the game (character slot + skin/title/gems/whatevs)

- Another purchase option (about 40€) with only the expansion, so you don’t have to buy the game twice

- Separated redeem codes for the core game and the expansion on the HoT Bundle, so if you already have the game you can give that second account to a friend or use it as a bank account.

That’s incorrect; As of Oct 2014, all expansions except for the latest one (Warlords of Draenor) are free with the purchase of the base-game.

So they rebundled the previous expansion into the base game.

They feel shafted because the wording of the original FAQs page indicated the base game and HoT would be 2 separate purchases and it isn’t. It’s a one-time purchase for both games that the vast majority would have waited to buy together if they’d had any indication of that possibility at all.

Ok, that is a solid point. I had no idea about the FAQ issue. I’ve been wading through all the outcries and must have missed that.

I change my stance on people that recently purchased the game. That said, veterans of the game saying they feel shafted I just can’t wrap my mind around.

It’s not hard to wrap your mind around really, new player gets the game and the xpac with 5 open character slots and 2 bank tabs. With those 5 open character slots they can create the new class The Revenant. Vet player gets the xpac, already has 2 bank tabs so that’s void, has all the core game so that’s void, and has all their character slots full. So if they want to play the new class which is a pretty major selling point for many, they have to either delete a character they have put time, effort, possibly money into, or they can buy a new character slot for an additional fee.

This is not my issue, I have an extra slot available but I can certainly see why they are upset. If I didn’t already have a slot available, your darn right I would want that slot, because my xpac just jumped from $50 – $60 if I want to play the new class that is a feature of the xpac.

People are having ridiculous expectations and it bothers me.

Why exactly does it bother you? That’s the more interesting question to me. You don’t even know these people.

Edit: just had a thought, I don’t know why we didn’t see it before. They did almost the exact same thing during beta of GW2. BUY THE GAME…but we just don’t know when it will be done. kitten , this community (myself included) just loves being slap in the face.

But the difference was we knew it was a new game that would have a lot of content, so forking up $60-150 wasn’t a problem.

We don’t even know how much content will be in HoT, I highly doubt even as much as 1/4 as the original release, and yet we will have to pay almost as much?

I really would not have had a problem paying $40 for the expansion alone, I mean really why should I get screwed on a $10 account just bought a couple months ago? and I only even did that as a reward to them for announcing the expansion, I should have just waited for the full package instead. If I buy the package now I might as well just open a new account with it.

I paid for the latest wow expansion at $60, got a ton of content, garrison, new zones, new dungeons, new raids, new pvp map, a free character boost. That was worth the cost. Existing based game accounts were also upgraded with all the previous expansions for free, that’s how you reward veteran accounts and encourage them to get the latest expansion.

Stop overlooking your current customers in another grab for new customers Anet, get a clue already, you can make both parties happy.

Another derailing post. ^^

Let’s see 2 cases below:
CASE 1:
I go to burger shop to buy a burger.
The price of a burger at 15:00-19:00 is $20.
I still want French Fries and coke ($20) which are only available after 19:00.
At 19:01, waitress says we’re offering big discount now, buying French fries and coke get free burger!

CASE 2:
The price of a burger at 15:00-19:00 is still $20.
French Fries and coke ($20) only available after 19:00.
At 19:01, the waitress says: we’re offering discount now, burger costs $10 only. So if you want a burger, French fries and coke, the total price is $30. (No more burger, thanks!)
Anyway, Thanks for waiting for French fries and coke, we’ll offer discount and coupon to customers who bought burger before 19:00.

Which case you think is more reasonable?

Current issues:
Pricing: too high. It’s the price of a full game but only 1 pvp map, 3 PvE zones and 1 wvw map have been announced. And some people suggested that even those that do not pay get access to the competitive content.

No character slot for 50$… seems like a bad joke. Like seriously, give 1 at 50$ and 3 at 75$-100$

It is still really unclear what we get for that price. Will people that don’t buy it get to participate in the guild halls? Because that would be unfair to those who paid.

If I would have been in the place of Anet I would have made it buy-able with gems, 2800 gems or something, 35$. This way everyone would have bought it.

Anyway I got it, but it’s really expensive, no question about it.

I think 30$ is an OK price for the expansion, and if someone wants to buy a character slot, it’s 40$ which sounds reasonable.
Even 50$ isn’t that much if the expansion is filled with content and features, but HoT ISN’T. The “feature heavy” is just a way to seem like there is a lot which there ISN’T.
So I won’t be buying HoT until they fix this mess that they made, purely from greed and no respect for the people who bought the core game at launch.

How is it that people still don’t understand, that the problem is not in the ability to earn money for the expansion, but in the amount of the content they offer for that price.

The difference is – you can actually eat two burgers. But you can’t eat two core games) But good point, anyway.

@Llort did you know that there is something called living world in GW2? Something that adds content at a later stage after release?

Why? Because we had to pay full price for two games, whereas new players buy one full price and get the previous free. Because for the same amount of content we had to pay twice as much, despite supporting anet since the beggining. i personally have spent overy $1000 on gems, but well, that was my own choice and while i dont expext any favortism for it, i most certainly am NOT okay with being screwed over instead. It’s just good customer service to reward loyalty. But even if you say we arn’t entitled to a discount, that doesn’t mean we should face the complete oposite and pay even more, not to mention twice as much.
