Putting any bugs and stability issues aside, since those are expected to happen with any major game release, what is your opinion on Heart of Thorns, did it deliver what it promised?

Personally I like a lot of the new things added and I’m enjoying the expansion so far, but yet cannot ignore the fact that a lot of things are missing or released half-done and the expansion feels rushed out just to meet the deadline.

  • Fractals are incomplete
  • World vs World is incomplete
  • Story was rushed
  • Some of the elite specializations were rushed
  • Some of the masteries were rushed
  • Scribing is incomplete
  • 3 proper maps instead of 4 (DS cannot be considered a proper map, it’s the same as SW)
  • QoL and proper QA testing seems missing in a lot of areas

Again, this is a talk about how HoT is at this very moment, not how it will be in a few months or years after “free updates Anet promised”.

Yep, paid to be a beta tester just like when I first bought the core game in 2012. Good stuff Anet, some things never change. I guess we are at fault for thinking they would.

Seems like a barely veiled list of complaints.

Everything in MMOs tends to be rushed, because everyone is demanding everything yesterday. I don’t necessarily believe the elist specializations and masteries were rushed, for eample. It’s just a convenient word people use because they really don’t know if they were rushed.

However the map deisgn of the first 3 maps have far exceeded my expectations for them. I’m finding the masteries a lot of fun, and I’m definitely liking the story better, even though it was short (which I don’t necessarily equate with rushed).

I’ve said all along I feel like I’ve paid for a season pass. However, without raids and the new UI, I’m not sure there’s a point to be talking about how the expansion is so far.

I mean that stuff is due to be released in what? Six days?

Shrugs. The expansion is something that should, if all goes well, continue to grow in value. With what I have right now, I’m having fun.

Actually it’s the bugs that bother me the most but I haven’t had a crash since I started using the 64 bit launcher.

I don’t count the three maps we have as proper though….

There just like Orr and Southsun
DS is indeed like DS and SW

Guild Halls should be in the mists not actual world maps slots however I can see why they did this because GvG agasint guilds with the exact same map wouldn’t make any sense unless it was in the mists and thus no GvG at all.

HoT ruined the old content by nerfing dungeons, reformatting recipes, and making things like the CMD pointless when compared to the Mentortag.

Some may disagree but a proper map in my book for this game has quests aka Hearts. Those three maps are just like Orr cept with a good deal less dragon minions and no feeling at all that your actually closing in on a Dragon…

You paid for it and you installed it and are indeed playing it so yes you should be discussing it as it is currently. Season Passes don’t exist for this genre and for good reason so there is no reason to pretend. Also this is Anet and its only going to be one raid coming soon. This says that the so called future content will be nothing more than the stuff that should have release with HoT so I’m sure they will be releasing nothing but the missing raids for months. What if a person doesn’t like raids!? If anet is going to be developing the missing raids there more than likely going to neglect everything else this isn’t a very competent dev its Anet so even if they say they have teams the end result never reflects that so raids are thee expectation.

Everything in MMOs tends to be rushed, because everyone is demanding everything yesterday.

Everyone is also demanding quality in what they pay for. Saying “it’s what the players want” is no excuse for HoT being rushed – not only ArenaNet took their time, but also they are meant to be the game developers, and to know how to properly develop one.

Or are you saying that ArenaNet is so feeble that they take no decision and instead leave everything to be decided by the players?

Let me sum it up even more for you: the whole expansion was rushed because they started working on it when they realized their previous strategy of Living World wasn’t working – but that was already too late.

They announced it in order to “hotfix” the community’s state back when the community had become very toxic (and rightfully so) and then had to push it out in order to not cause more harm.

Its scope in most areas is lackluster – its only staying power and longevity artificially created by the requirement to grind things out and having various gates.

Hell – Raids – a part of the expansion aren’t even in the game yet. Same with the legendary weapons and armor.

In fact – there are a lot of things missing from it – for example :skins – armor skins – in a cosmetically driven game such as GW2 it’s amazing that so few armor skins released with HoT.

Yes it is incomplete – it’s the best we get.

If here they fall they shall live on when ever you cry “For Ascalon!”

You are aware that after each Elite Spec was added to the game during the betas the feedback players provided was used to tweak and improve the class -except Druid and I believe Scrapper didn’t get this treatment.

Also I’m pretty sure the developers themselves admitted that druid was reworked a couple of times and was pushed back because it wasn’t ready to release.

The story was short – and you might say it wasn’t rushed – that it was intentional but just like me you have no proof of that.
All I know is this: if a story was to be rushed it would most likely end up being short and HoT’s story is short. You can choose to believe that’s intended and not because they rushed it – but that’s just your opinion.

Bugs were abundant and still are – but the saddest part is that people are OK with things being added “later” ( see raids) when this is the clearest sing that the expansion was rushed.

If Raids were ready then we’d have had them with the expansion, right? What other reason could there be for Raids not being released other than they’re not in a good state right now?

I think Anet is understaffed when it comes to WvW and PvP development.
Only 1 pvp map is a really poor offering and the WvW population/reward/scoring issues still haven’t been fixed.

This is particularly problematic when you consider PvP and WvW are the core endgame content.

If they had a dozen people working on these game modes they would really take the game to another level. I guess the same could be said with dungeons, where are the HoT dungeons-raids? Is a single raid going to be enough?
