Had I known that after purchasing HoT you wouldn’t even get the full experience due to locks on mastery skills and what have you, I would have never purchased it. I really don’t want to have to horde Hero Points. I was really expecting to be able to use the new content right off the bat, considering I spent a considerable amount of money on the expansion. When I logged on and saw that I still couldn’t use any of the new weapons for any of my classes, then noticed that you have to grind Hero Points to gain access to such feature, I immediately felt that I just wasted money on something for nothing. Especially since I am a casual player. Sorry, but it’s just not the right thing to do in my opinion, and I feel like I have to rant about it. If you’re going to lock the content, at least make it easier to access.

What would the point be in having an elite specialisation if it was just all open and available immediately.

I agree that the pacing of unlocking the elite specs needs some work, as currently you need to have full core map completion and all the hero points on two maps minimum to unlock the full elite spec.

Words of wisdom.

Remember when “preorder” meant “pay 5 of {insert local currency here} to secure a copy and possibly some goodies on release day”?

I held out on buying HOT because I wasn’t sure if it was going to be good. Oddly enough, it seems like my cup of tea as I enjoy challenging content and the idea that skills are actually earned instead of handed to you on a platter. Lucky for me. But why, kitten storm after crowd funded / pre-purchased kitten storm, do gamers still pay for their games in full before they’re even bloody well finished? Mind boggling!

I’m a bit on the fence on this. On the one hand, I’m a bit peeved at the amount of HP required to unlock a Elite spec. It seems like unneccesary padding to extend the time to play. I want to run around as a Chrono and Scrapper!
On the other hand, when GW2 first came out I had to earn the skills as well by playing the game. And this is basically a similar situation.
I dont mind spending some time getting the HP for the elite specs, exploring the jungle and going to the HP around the maps. Its more that as a relatively casual player (1-2h every other day) gaining sufficient HP will take a long time over the alts.
The casualness seems to have gone a bit. But then again all the Maguuma area’s are accesible to all my lvl 80 alts. So map content wise I still can do anything I want, just not with all the skills at that time.

What this does is extend the amount of time I can spend playing the game. It artificially extends the amount of content in the game, and in a way that is what I bought when I added HOT to my account. In Value to cost ratio, GW2 (and GW1 before) have an extremely high value (time played/enjoyed) vs cost.
Just compare going to a movie at €10 for 2 hours. Or GW2 at €50 for 1200h.
So in that sense, i’m fine with as it is.

Just for comparison, going back to GW1, there was also the requirement to buy the new skills when a new campaign came out. And each profession had to buy the skills again. So decking out alts took a long time as well.

That need for instant gratification always kinda baffles me…
I for one like that its paced, gives you an objective.. I feel no need to burn through the maps as a elite spec from the get go.
I find it better to earn it, also gives you a bit of time to play around with each new skill individually.
One thing i’d change though:
If you want to use the new weapon from the get-go, while you’re leveling up the mastery, you’re basically wasting a whole freaking specialization line, because you have to equip the mastery for the weapon.
This was something that always has had many players confused and concerned, myself included. IMO the best thing to have would be on the same page, a 4th single slot, Weapon Mastery.
There you’d equip the weapon mastery from the elite specs, you could even pick one weapon from the core class that you’d have to trade off if necessary.
So you could run with the weapon without running the elite traits. BUT running the elite traits would lock you to their specific weapon.
So for example, you could keep being a regular guardian, but use the dragon hunter weapon knowledge, but because the lack of traits you’d never be as good as one. But if you’re a Dragon Hunter, then you use your signature weapon, the bow, not the other (future elite) guy’s weapon.

So far that’s the only issue i have with the current system, and its somewhat minor.

I still haven’t bought HoT, there were too many things going wrong in the main game and when I take a look in this sub-forum and the bug section, I feel very happy I’ve waited so far :o

Let’s see how my favourite game tester writes about it… he is also -mostly- a casual player and massive grind is a no-go for him. He gave GW2 90/100 points when it was released back in 2012. As I see it from the outside and after “playing” the 2hour beta, all I can see is grind > content.

I’m enjoying the expansion content. I think Anet did an awesome job, except I’m also really bummed that I can’t enjoy this content on the new spec. I’m just trying not to think about the elite spec for now and just enjoy the new content on my existing spec. But this whole experinece could have been so much better. What a missed opportunity.

I feel much the same.

Forums are often a bad barometer for such things.

People happily playing the game are busy happily playing the game not QQing here. In saying the weight of negative response vastly outweighs anything positive I have seen on the forum.

Outside that all my in-game friends are gutted and that speaks volumes to me. Peeps I have known for 10 years since Prophecies release are throwing their toys out of the cot and leaving the game, at least for now till Anet sorts it out.

I’ve been playing this game for 10 years and never seen the like.

A couple forums topic below this one, “thanks Anet” got 15 replies, 1 Anet dev replies, on this post people are unhappy, no reply from dev. So very obvious they don’t give a kitten about players who felt they are ripped off.
But here is another not happy customer of ur product, I even bought 2 of those product of yours that I really regret.
I’m a core wvw player, but I don’t mind playing some PvE to get the guild hall, I see my guildies doing it and what I feel already that no one really like to do that, we did it on 2 attempts , it wasn’t hard at all. But after that I see people going offline by disappointment, too huge, we had the kite also kite skill but can’t fly up and down yet because u need to upgrade ur hall, and by doing that need to farm a lot of PvE.
So u killed a lot of wvw guilds/players to upgrade that guildhall.
Wvw maps, I think Anet u guys should increase The amount of players in eternal battleground. Because ur new borderlands sucks, we wvw players don’t like EoTm that much, reasons are to many holes, long distances of walk, to much PvE contents. So what do you guys do on the "expansion "? Create sort kinda EoTm map, huge and lots of holes and stuff what yeah looks cool but totally not necessary, I rather pay u 50€ to fix have a server lag fix then those new borderlands.
I paid in total 150€ for 2 expansions and how big was that expansion? 3,5gig of data……so it wasn’t that many data.

I understand how you feel, but that wouldn’t work – it’s a lagfest, as it is.

I know you suggested they could fix the lag issues first, but they never seem to.

They just seem to up the numbers, when someone like you asks them to and then (hopefully) lower them again, when someone like me complains that the game is unplayable that way.

It’s a neverending cycle that needs to end, ASAP, frankly.

If anything, they need to lower the numbers and provide more maps (if they can’t/won’t do something to significantly reduce the lag, any other way).

I totally understand that some people feel as though the new weapon specializations did not need to be instantly available, but as many others have stated, the fact that you need 400 Hero Points to completely unlock all the new abilities is going about things the wrong way. As I said, I consider myself a casual player, and I don’t consider this expansion to be friendly towards casual players like myself. I do wholeheartedly regret pre-ordering the expansion, but I did put my faith in ANet considering they have stated multiple times before Guild Wars 2 came out that it wouldn’t feel like a grind. Well, it does. This is just icing on the old grind-cake. I just feel like I was cheated out of my money to invest in something that was very much hyped. Hopefully they will change the system, otherwise, I will be taking a break for a while until something does change.

Hellfire… Yeah. That was kind of a poop expansion, but keep in mind that Blizzard did not make it. That expansion was made by Sierra, a long dead development studio that had been struggling to make decent games for a long time before they finally bit the dust. Or were they bought out by EA? I don’t remember.

As far as LDoN, that really depends. LDoN dungeons were amazing to level in. I loved the procedural randomness to it, and it made leveling characters a lot faster, and finding groups for LDoNs were a lot easier to do. I will agree with you beyond that. The currency system they added to get the gear from it was very meh, and the raid content introduced in LDoN was extremely bad.

Its been 2 days? How has it been a grindfest? I love the self-entitlement of people who are asking to be spoon-fed and having no progression. MASTERIES are account bound, do them once and all your characters have them and it will become x10 easier to get those hero points you need in maguuma for the rest of your characters. This has been the smoothest expansion release I’ve witnessed imho, it could be ALOT worse (yet there’s nothing that has gone wrong?) if you’re experiencing a lagfest, check your connection (my guildies have reported barely any to little lag at all) So again, I fail to see the arguement after only being 2 days and Im already 6 MPs in and 70% done with my Elite Spec (I’ve played a total of 8 hours over 2 days).

EQ itself was a grind. Thats basically all that game entailed. LDoNs just provided a place to do that grind without having to worry about people taking mobs from your camp, making that grind seem a bit faster, since there was more stuff to actually kill. I am speaking strickly in a leveling sense, however. Once you got max level, LDoN really was pointless, and there were far better places to grind out AAXP (Plane of Fire/Earth) than in LDoNs.

No, what WoW did is called progression. Quests and an actual sense of you know, progressing. The new elite specs in GW2 do not improve your character in any way as they are balanced to be equal to the rest of the class, and are intended to be an expansion on to an existing platform. Its not the same.

That’s kind of the point I’m gearing towards. I didn’t keep up with the hype 24/7 (sue me), but from what I saw and gathered, it seemed to me that there would be classes being able to use new weapons and skills after purchasing HoT immediately. It didn’t occur to me that I would have to work towards having that privilege. Being as I don’t play often enough to work towards said goal, I don’t see myself getting the benefits of HoT to its full potential, and thus, feel as though I upgraded for nothing. All my toons are sitting there as indifferent as they were before HoT.

ANet hit fun with a 15 stack of burning. Now it’s about playing the way they want.

. . . it’s their game, it’s always been about “playing the way we want”. Anything else is just lies and fictions players tell themselves because they’re allowed to choose not to go into grindy if they don’t really want to.

(Most times. I mean, before now, if you want the shiny yellow-colored coins you are going to have to get to work. You want that pink named gear? Get to work and sink some time into that.)

Now it’s a lot like “well, you can still make it through but you’re going to be taking the long way”. And notably, that gate in the story content about the level 4 mastery? It’s getting fixed.

There has never truly been “play this game your way”, anywhere – not even in tabletop RPGs because you’re still playing by the GM’s rulings and output. The only game conceivably which does that is Minecraft. And even then it can be argued you don’t get to play it your way in some edge cases.

This whole “but I can’t play MY WAY!” crap really annoys me, especially because ANet should have been savvy enough not to say something like that to the generations of today. They should have said:

“Here’s our world of Tyria. Approach it as you like, we don’t feel you need to be pressured to rush to the end just to have a good time. We don’t want to tell you no, you must be this l33t to ride, we want to tell you everyone has something they can do in this game and still make a difference to other players.”

But, hey, I’m sure if they said that there’s still be people complaining they need to get to the end to have a good time because that’s the only way they can.

HPs was a “clever” way of increasing levels instead of increasing the level cap to say 100. You must level all yout toons via HPs insted. Then at max u get Elite. Makes sense to me.

My problem is the way I like to play GW2 is altering between all my classes. I can still do, but now I feel bad about not leveling my main to get all 400 HPs…

I think AN should offer a 10 hour HP-Booster (100-500%) to players once they have have reached 400 HP for they first toon.
