So yeah, the amount of things the reviewer says he doesn’t understand or is confused by is rather… alarming?

I understand there’s some satire in the video, but if a professional game review website has people that are confused and lost by HoT, I’d say that’s a point of concern.

Some of the main things said in the video:

  • “The new expansion, coming whenever”
  • Verdant Brink is one giant dynamic event… it’s actually slightly confusing
  • “let me introduce the mastery system, I don’t understand it at all”
  • While the events are engaging and exciting, it does detract from the actual zone because you can’t explore and take in the beuty of the map

I don’t know about how much of that wouldn’t be confusing to someone who doesn’t play the game. This Expac is designed for veteran people far more than it is new players. This reviewer obviously doesn’t play the game at all, but I don’t know I found his satire and puns to be very entertaining and all in all while he makes good points about it, I don’t think we’ll have much to fear as when new players join up they have awhile before they reach that content at all. So they will learn it at a much easier pace. besides with the betas so much of it is locked off right now especially in way of masteries it is hard to get a good grasp on them even for veteran players.

I mean, I recently started playing another big MMO and they are on their 6th… expac? Something like that. Anyway their latest one deals with going back in time and into the past of the game. I didn’t understand ANY of it at all when I first started the game. I JUST hit level 80 out of a max of 100 there and I am just now actually understanding a whole lot more. Things geared toward end-game players take time for new players to learn. So I am not really that concerned about it. It is good to make note of it though.

A final note: That reviewer is entertaining as all get out.

All in all, he found a grand total of two things confusing:

  • Masteries, which he then went on to pretty much nail the explanation of the system anyway.
  • The map, where the confusion come more from the unfamiliarity of the map and not the system itself.

I don’t see why that would be alarming, to be honest.

About verdant brink being one big event?, how does he know? that beta shows about 40% of ONE of the three layers, so around 15% of the map.
And as someone else already aid he clearly haven’t played the game much before and/or didnt read up on ANY of the content from blogs beforehand.
So yeah seem anything but “professional” to me

I love it. My only complaint is that they gave ranged hammer to revenants instead of mesmers.

Given the ‘eventful’ trend of the last two new zones, it’s not unreasonable to expect more of the same.

The table is a fable.

True, but it is nowhere near proof either, a reviews should be based on facts, not assumptions

Lack of release date and detracting events aren’t really confusions on his part.
But yes the mastery system is confusing (some UI tweaking needed). As far as map events are concerned, probably something veterans would have a good grasp on.

whoever buy the expantion they said it can start from there… so it’s not for end gamers only.
i don’t know what people find confusing about mastery system. it seems pretty straight forward to me. you gain exp and you gain level on mastery. where is it exactly confusing?

People get confused. Even players that have played this game since launch probably found something that was confusing to them in the beta. Move on.

Alarming? No
Hilarious? Yes. Oh Absolutely!

Unfortunately this ‘reviewer’ suffers from simple lack of knowledge because he hasn’t been 1) playing the game and 2) following any of the released information. He just sort of jumped in. In the middle of a war zone, none the less. So yeah, I can see why he’s a bit discombobulated.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

If reviewing games is your profession, then you are a professional game reviewer…nothing “contradictory” about it.
