HoT graphical optimization feedback
I do find the HoT areas are quite overwhelming for lower-spec machines, though I haven’t had a chance to try it on my gaming machine.
I have a gaming laptop with i7 processor and gtx 960m, I’ve explored all maps in the core game with FPS ranging from 45 – 60fps, which, in my opinion is great. Until I went into the jungle. One moment the FPS counter will show 55fps and the next 15fps. This is absolutely unacceptable. i’ll make few steps, and it will rise to 25fps, then 28fps, then I will turn one way and it becomes 50 fps. I turn the other way and it’s back to 25 or 15fps. I don’t know what to say. I am extremely disappointed and I sincerely hope that the devs will optimize the maps better. Right now, HoT is unplayable due to this…
This.
I also play in a laptop [i5 2.5ghz geforce 540m (bad gpu)] and the fps is terrible, i can’t even play in medium settings, it drops from 75fps to 15~20fps.
Yup, it was really hard to enjoy the map. I ended up going to WvW because it was getting annoying.
I expect it has to do with the heavy 3D and tons and tons of special effects going on all over. Really puts a strain on systems that aren’t built better for 3D gaming.
The moment I moved to a nice boring cave in the normal part of the game, everything is perfectly fluid again.
I’m having serious frame rate issues in some areas. Has HoT not been optimized completely, yet? I don’t have this issue in any other area in the game.

Drastic fps drops in beta Verdant Brink – and Silverwastes/Dry Tops – for me too.
Here’s hoping things will become better!
I’d expect that it’s not totally optimized yet. Remember, it’s still a beta weekend, so these are the kinds of things they’ll be testing and hopefully working on prior to release.

Agreed, I don’t have the best computer for gaming, really hope they optimize it by release!
in my experience this has little to do with the graphic nature of the new content and the load on their test/beta servers. they are simply not up to par yet with the other servers already established. look for this to be improved upon with each BWE and upon release.
Same thing here. Looking in certain directions in VB where you can see very far fps drops. Some places it bounces between 10 and 70, totally unplayable right now.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one experiencing these problems. The worst thing is, lowering the options or resolution doesn’t help at all….

I agree. Having no problem on my tower, but serious issues on my laptop.
I think the main problem is the smoke.

I think the main problem is the smoke.
It might be the crashed smoking pact ship at the middle of the area. I think everything is rendered with the same detail regardless of distance and everytime you look into the ship’s direction (when you are not in the cave because in those the “outside world” is not seem to be rendered) it blows the laptop. The most demanding effect in the game is smoke indeed in general btw.
edit: No, its not the ship and the smoke. Regardless of the ship’s direction framerate drops when i look toward certain big open areas. Same thing with Silverwastes. Even if i look at cliffs there with nothing more than desert plains between me and them the framerate dies. Lion’s Arch is new and this does not happen there.

I’m having the same issue. I’m not really one who cares TOO much about frames and my rig isn’t particularly beefy. I can run things on medium settings in the rest of the game with a steady 25-30fps. I went into HoT and suddenly I got a dip to 10 in the worst spots of the game, mostly when looking out over the scenery of Verdant Brink. It really detracts from the experience, especially when things are jumping around in battle and it’s difficult to keep up with everything.
I notice the same problem in the SW jumping puzzle. When there is too much rendering on my screen the frame rate will dip, sometimes dramatically.
EDIT: I also remember this being an issue in the first couple of GW2 betas as well. They got things rolling pretty quickly. I just hope they’re just as quick as last time.

I’m not sure it’s just because it’s still being developed.
I’m using a laptop, not for gaming, but i still can play the game very well. But, on the last 3 maps that were added(The Hot Beta one, Dry Top, and Silverwastes) the framerate drops a lot. I’m not entirely sure as to why, but since it’s a common problem with all latest maps, i fear it won’t improve much, unless they improve those maps too somehow
On the new maps the ammount of mesh you actually see seems to affect performance heavily, much more than in the original zones. I dont know why is that and i dont know arenanet gets the feedback or even cares :S.
Im planning on buying a gaming desktop pc anyway because of other games, but id still want to be able to play it on my laptop which could handle the original game without struggle.

My point exactly! I bought a new gaming laptop mostly because of GW2. Imagine my joy when I could roam across the maps with 50fps! Imagine my disappointment when I visited the jungle and it was 20fps! I don’t care about fps as long as it’s above 30. But everything below that number and I cannot enjoy a game.
There’s just too much smoke and steam effects – that’s the fundamental issue. That’s the issue and I can’t find a slider to remove it and increase performance. In the Itzl village it was the worst. Why on earth a village should have worst fps due to smoke is beyond me.
They either need to tone back the smoke and steam a significant amount or add in a slider which will remove it for those of us struggling. At the moment it feels like a jump in hardware specs required to play.
I had to knock the settings way down on my aging desktop, which can run the rest of the game just fine. There’s a LOT of smoke/sparks/etc. going on and the 3D nature of the map puts a strain on the system is all. My beefy gaming laptop can handle it but my fps still drops randomly, so I’m not sure if it’s not optimized or if there’s just a LOT going on graphically in the newer areas. The ruins and the Itzel village are fine unless something like the village burning down happens, so I’m thinking it’s just all the fire and smoke effects hitting the machines hard.
I understand the smoke and such (lots of burning wreckage we’re just discovering and exploding wyvern eggs and all) but I’m looking forward to getting away from that to see if it’s just the one graphics-heavy area causing the trouble or if it’s the entire expansion.
It’s a little hard to go off of half of a zone during a beta test so we just can’t be sure.
