So you can read the wikipedia article on it, but the closest thing that HoT matches to is an “expandalone”.
This is what bothers me the most. Calling it an expansion was misleading. I convinced a couple of friends to buy the game to get familiar and start getting a character up in levels to be able to play the expansion. However, we aren’t getting one. What we have is the opportunity to buy the game again to unlock the new content.
With HoT I feel ashamed I recommended the game.
Just look at how WoW handled their expansions. It took years for them to fold the expansion into the core content. You had to buy the current core then the expansion. That’s how this whole DLC thing has been working for years, with games like RockBand. Buy the first game and it’s DLC, buy the expandalone of the second game. Because you bought the first game you have those songs and new players can still access all that same DLC.
Even GW1 to GW2 had loyalty rewards. Sure I might hardly ever use the mini pets or weapon skins I got (except the awesome fiery dragon sword), but I got them. Give me a commemorative weapon skin and a goofy HoT hat to go along side my GW2 hat in my character bank. Anything but making me feel like I’m paying for a game I’m already playing just to get new content.
