Did anyone progress far enough into the story yet to know how far the ‘backpiece’ you get can be upgraded?

I threw mine away because I needed space in my inventory (and it seemed subpar in stats anyway), but now it appears you get upgrades for it? (leather belt or something like that)

Did I screw myself out of a potentially nice item?

You get the upgraded version through a collection so if you obtain the first item and get rid of it you are still fine because it ticks off in the collection.
