Downloaded GW2 free version for the first time few weeks ago and fell in love with the game. Bought the expansion this morning and it has me downloading almost 30gigs again. I thought when I downloaded the free version it downloaded the expansion content too it just was locked for me. Is the expansion really this big? Thanks.

The default should be “download on demand” that can be changed in the settings. IIRC the initial download is just the starter instances, starter maps and racial cities. The total size of the dat is somewhere in the 20s of GB. Mine is 28.7 but that includes some extra cruft from playing since beta.

Not really. The .dat was already fairly large even before HoT.
