the suggestion is sound, however, the area you show on the maps are way to big for a personal home instance.
for instance, the norn version only needs the upper part of the red lined area, any more and you’re looking are a small village.
one other thing is that, making an area larger then the map truly is makes it an issue by map use, this isn’t the tartarus you know.
the rest is fine, i love to have an editable house to make my own.
The red and blue areas on the map aren’t for 1 instanced home but could be a separate instanced map with many zones for homes in it, not individual instance housing like homes currently are. Yes, a small village or section of player homes is exactly what i mean. and these areas are perfect for that. (Tardis rules can apply )
another option would be instanced housing – this is where the “Everydoor is an instance” rule applies. (think of the other districts in DR, those homes could be your new home instance completely bare for you to decorate.)
and some maps already seem like the Tardis i’ve noticed.
SW and Dry top are smaller but compared to the other pre 80 maps seem like they should take up more space then they do on the world map. Now i haven’t tested how long it take to run from one side of the map to the other ingame, but i’d imagine the Tardis effect DOES already apply to some maps.
—Though personally being able to see other peoples creative expression of how they decorate their homes inside and outside is part of what makes decorating fun. Much like your choice of armor your choice of house style and decor reflects the same individual expressions.
(Uninstanced housing might not be possible of course due to limits with coding but brainstorming ideas is never a bad thing.)

After thinking about this I have come up with this for housing.
Place, or use, a building in Lion’s Arch. There is a Real Estate person inside that you purchase your home from or visit if you wish to upgrade to a larger home. There are venders to buy items for your house. One vender for furniture. One vender for decorative things such as plants, paintings and wallpaper. At the back of the building is an Asura gate. You enter it to enter your house.
Lets say they give us a choice of 6 types of housing. Those 6 housing types could be, from smallest to largest, Studio, Cottage, House, Manor, Estate and Castle.
The Studio would be a small single room. The Cottage would be a medium size single room. The house would be a large single room. The Manor would be 2 rooms. The Estate would be 3 rooms. The Castle would be 4 rooms. The larger the home the more it would cost and the more decorations you can put in it. There would also be a monthly maintenance fee for “upkeep” on all except the studio which is free. If you miss your monthly payment when the next one comes due if it has not been paid then your items get put into storage.
We would have options, for the inside, that let us make the house our own. We could make the style match our race. We could place furniture. Storage cabinets, beds, chairs, tables, rugs, paintings for the walls, trophies from Dungeons, Fractuals or Boss fights. You would have an orb on a stand that when clicked on gives you the option to go to your friend’s and Guildmate’s homes.
I may add to this as I think of more things.
While I can see the appeal, technically, we already have a house. Or more accurately, we have a home instance (5 of them in fact). Granted, you can’t customize it much beyond putting in chests/nodes in set locations, but it is there. I don’t really see a reason to add additional housing options, but that’s just my opinion.
The main reason I don’t expect it to happen however is because it would take Anet quite a a lot of resources to implement it. First they’d have to design and code it in, and then they’d have to store all the additional data (item placement etc.) on new servers. Keeping tabs on the nodes active in a player’s home instance(s) is fairly easy and doesn’t take up much space on their servers. Most likely it’s just a list of yes/no switches. Saving all the data for every single item placed in every single specific home instance (which item, the coordinates of the item, etc.) would take up a lot of space, and I’m not sure Anet would be willing to invest in that.
Mind you, being able to customize your home instance (much like a guild hall) would be pretty cool. But I just don’t see it happening.
I wrote in another housing thread (of which there have been several recently and should perhaps all be merged) that I’d be very happy with just two little changes to the home instance:
1. Allow me to place my nodes where I want, similar to the guild hall placement technology, although maybe not as clumsy when it comes to erasing.
2. Allow all my toons to share one home instance, e.g. DR. Maybe via an option on each toon’s hero panel – “Preferred instance”.
That would make my wintersday. Alas, I don’t expect it to happen.
