Serious question – please keep any unecessary drama out of this thread. Some people think HoT is overpriced, some think it’s just fine the way it is. Whichever camp you’re in – good for you.

I’m curious as to how long after GW2’s initial release it took for the game to first go on sale. I was just about to pre-order it, when at last minute I noticed that the pricing was presented in £ and not €, and so I’m thinking of holding off for a while. I’m not in a hurry, after all – there’s plenty of content in the core game I’ve yet to do, and there’s a plethora of other games to keep me busy while waiting.

Does anyone happen to know?

They permanently lowered the price 9 months after launch by $10. A year and 8 months after launch they had a 9 day sale where the game was available for $25.

I think the expansion will lower in price much quicker than the base game did though.

That sounds about right.

(Also note: retailers offered discounts at other times, depending on their own criteria.)

I would wait at minimum until the end of November. If HoT isn’t a huge success at launch, it will almost certainly go on sale during black friday week.

Perhaps. But probably by no more than 5-10 dollars (more than that on a game released in October would be unusual unless it was part of a major promotion like a console bundle), and you’ve lost a month of access to the new content as well as pre-purchase bonuses (like an extra character slot).

Technically you can get HoT at a discount now if you have enough disposable income for it.

Currently Ultimate edition offers US$70 worth of gem store items ($20 in character slots and $50 in gems) for $100, so you’d only be paying $30 for the expansion itself. Based on the core’s pricing it will be almost 2 years before you have an opportunity to buy it at that price range, so if you think it’s likely you would use cash to buy at least 5600 gems in that time then you would be better off getting HoT Ultimate now.

If you have no intention of buying gems with cash then you might just have to wait 9 months for the first permanent price drop.
