Q:

We know ArenaNet keeps making new weapons for the Gem Store, and once in a while new armor/outfit skins. Considering how many new skins they add to the Store, it’s likely those skins are a significant source of income for them. And so, between releasing those skins “for free” as part of other content or charging for each individual skin, it would be much more profitable for ArenaNet to release skins only through the Gem Store.

We know ArenaNet likes to throw us a bone once in a while, though. Many of the new armor skins we got “for free” since release may be reskins (Luminescent is an almost identical reskin of Carapace, Glorious Hero’s Armor is a very similar reskin of Glorious Armor), but we do get “free” stuff here and there.

My question is, how many new skins are we going to get? In the original Guild Wars, when Factions was released it came with A LOT of new armor skins (especially considering how each profession had its own skins) and many new weapon skins.

I somehow doubt we will get many in HoT. With ArenaNet’s art team busy making weapons, armor and outfits for the Gem Store, it’s likely we will get very few skins in the game, and most will be sold through the Gem Store, since that’s far more profitable for ArenaNet.

What do you people think?

I think skins are less profitable than a boxed expansion at £30-£50 per sale, so there better be some skins with Heart of Thorns, or im going to be a bit frustrated. Im pretty sure they will introduce more skins, just because of specializations, so they will want to make skins for weapons to suit the professions they’re going to. For example, theres a distinct lack of Necromancer-ish greatswords in the game, and in turn, armour skins to match those new weapons.

Im actually holding off on giving a few of my characters skins for their level 80 gear, because im waiting to see what HoT holds for us.

Well in GW1 they essentially doubled the amount of skins when they released factions. I would hope they would follow the trend and add a healthy amount for HoT, I mean we are gonna be paying for it. I also hope that they aren’t all jungle themed, I love the idea of some ancient Mursaat armour.
Personally I would quite like the return of normal and elite counterparts to armour, think it would add a little diversity and prestige to some sets

My hope is that there will be better balance for the skins for both genders.

Currently, there’s a lot of female armours that look interesting and exciting that also have been attacked by scissors.

There are much fewer interesting looking male armours and bar a few exceptions, are very efficient at keeping skin protected from the cold or sun.

Male skins tend to look more bad kitten than female skins.
-
Basically, there’s a need for more bad kitten female armour skins
More interesting/fantastical male armour skins.
More fleshy male armour skins.

Just for the sole purpose of balance. You really notice this when a large number of players gather up. Male characters tend to be dressed in a heavy looking dressing gown or an Ironman suite. Whilst female characters are wearing Mardi Gras costumes or something practical. The difference is very blunt.

I hope there will be additional skins for weapons and armors, especially armors. We only get BLTC weapons, yet no armors (outfits you say? ahhahahaha … leave). So I hope we get at least another 50% additional sets of armor as there are ingame now That’s be a joy to make some outfits _

I was thinking about this, and I hope they aren’t going to give us a few armors per map or some such nonsense.

Also hoping for some really unique sets that compliment older skins. We all mix and match so we need a lot more pieces for that. And NO more fire themed stuff, get some other elements going!

If we are lucky we get 3…or 4 sets who most likely will be generic without much flavour….5 if we count the rev set…oh yea and the 1 piece the specs get…. Why only so few? Check the past 3 years…should be enough evidence…specially now that we only get outfits through the gem store and we will never again get a gem store armor set, the nice times are over where you awaited every gem store update to see what skins you can buy to use for a char…or just parts of it. I long gave up fighting the downfall of visual customisation…specially as charr player. The armors they added to the game are to the greatest parts glitchy, low quality and stretched loveless over the charr body…or just ignore racial features such as horns and tails…or asuran ears….so yea… HoT for sure wont bring much armors…and those who come will ignore asura and charr cause they gonna be “just” rewards… equip the caprax or the pvp armors or reward armor skins from LS they added and tell me im wrong. So yea.. armors are for me the least exciting stuff about HoT.. cause i know ill get disappointed if i look forward to some nice things.

“During Living World Season 2, Crystin took charge of a new team that was organized to improve in-game rewards in Guild Wars 2. Previously, no single dedicated team handled in-game rewards, and individual content teams were responsible for deciding how players would be rewarded. Crystin felt there should be a greater balance between Gem Store item offerings and in-game rewards, and she and the rewards and commerce teams have worked on creating a clear division so that items will fit their method of distribution. For example, armor sets are now exclusively designed as in-game rewards while outfits are primarily Gem Store offerings.”

And this is why I love Anet. Well one of the reasons. They care about the player experience much over exact profit.

I do believe we will be excited to see the skins we receive in game for HoT though. I mean with them being able to conjure them up over this period of time without having any released. . . they must have quite a few sets for us! ^.^

Zero, nada, none, zip, nothing, you best be dreaming because all the new skins in this game will be in the cash shop. Not only that but… oh wait we’ve had beta weekend and already had a glimpse of future skins to come and even weapons sets have already been documented. This isn’t Shaman datamined data either as who knows when those unreleased skins he dug will ever be released.

At any rate one of the new weapon sets coming with HoT the Makeshift line…

Well I was going to link them but it seems the Wiki is messing up or they’ve simply been taken down. If anyone else has a decent link to the Makeshift weapon set or even a single Makeshift Weapon that would be helpful as that’s proof of new sets and not just from the mouths of the devs.

Sure. It’s a clear decision, but that doesn’t make it a good one. They can call putting a new outfit in the store every month and a new armor set in the game once a year “a greater balance between Gem Store item offerings and in-game rewards” but that doesn’t make it true. Plus I can’t be alone in being perfectly happy to pay for gemstore armor skins (I own all but the zodiac skins) and refusing to buy even a single locked-together do-it-their-way-or-not-at-all outfit.

You might not be alone in being perfectly happy to buy gemstore armor, but every single time they put a new set in the gemstore there was inevitably threads where people were asking why they were gemstore armor and not ingame armor and saying how much better it would be if they could get them ingame. I don’t recall seeing any posts disagreeing with these people. So ANet gave them what they asked for, ingame armor.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.
