Well this mood for HoT is definitely different to what I expected. From what I’ve seen so far you have a few camps:

1. “Errrmaaaguuurd I have to play the game to unlock stuff!?!?”

Did you seriously think buying the expansion would automatically unlock everything for you? If this was the case, you would be back on the forums within an hour of launch saying that HoT was a waste of money.

2. “I assumed all this stuff and now I’m annoyed none of it is true”

Well you know what they say about assuming…..it makes an kitten out of u and me. You’ve only got yourself to blame.

3. “400HP is too high! I demand less!”

They’re called ELITE SPECIALIZATIONS for a reason, not every Tom, kitten and Harry has them. Just look at all those thousands of Lamborghini’s you see everyday……oh yeah you don’t, and that’s why they are considered high end vehicles. Not an exact comparison but close enough for you to get the idea.

4. “I want a refund because XXXXX is not available at launch”

Wouldn’t you rather everything was tested than buggy beyond belief so that you couldn’t complete it? If it was release with a load of bugs you would complain that they didn’t take long enough testing it ask, and say you want a refund for not getting what was promised.

At the end of the day Guild Wars 2 wasn’t exactly a challenging game/never required a long period of effort put into it, so stop complaining that areas of the game are the opposite of that now. If HoT was made easy you would ask be here in 24hrs complaining about that too.

I for one welcome the challenge for getting elite specializations across 13 characters, forging the new legendaries and prepping for raids.

Congratulations CoJo and pals for making a game that challenge the best of is and not just be completed in 3hrs! Hopefully Guild Wars 2: Cogs of War (GW2: CoW) will be just as challenging

There are plenty of people excited about it too. Look at places like reddit, instead of the official forums. It’s just there here, the more controversial posts stay up longer.

I’ve got a guild of a couple of hundred people, with about 30-50 regulars who log in many times a week, if not every day. We’re all happy and excited about the game.

Yep, forums are always bad places to judge the general mood as they are always heavily weighted towards complaints. The happy majority are happily playing and happily looking forward to the expansion.

I don’t know how many active players the game has but there are really only a handful of folks generating most of the forum complaints. /shrug

Few people will (and I include myself) post just talk about how happy there are. And this kind of post usually don’t get many responds. The forum is mostly about discussion and debate and it’s a lot more fun and easier to do that in a thread about a negative opinion. What can you debate when someone talk about how they are happy about a feature. It’s a lot more entertaining to debate someone that seem extremist in their view of a feature. It’s just human nature.

For the same reason nobody call a TV station to tell them how good their show was. It’s always some angry minority that call in outrage about something.

Personally, I’m trying to convince myself to get work done today so I have more free time tomorrow, but so far have just ended up idling on the forums wishing it was tomorrow already.

Also, if you don’t want salt poisoning I would suggest staying off this forum for at least a month or so after the launch of HoT.

There is no need for hostility, if you don’t agree with other posters simply move on. That would be the mature thing to do!!!

I expect that tomorrow the forums will be filled with complaints. It’s typical for that to happen with games like this. No launch ever goes totally smooth.

I’m mostly concerned about class balance and how salvaging nerfs will effect the economy both as a supplier and buyer. I care more about Halloween content especially since it’s seasonal whereas I can level a revenant anytime afterward. Hero points only have to be unlocked once per character and it’s nice having long-term goals that don’t involve buying weapon skins and dyes or the mats needed to mystic forge them.

I’m excited.

Little wary of how the hero point situation will affect my ability to enjoy the jungle. Unless I decide to level up a Revenant first, but I’ll likely want to pop into the jungle at some point during launch to do the personal story on my Elementalist (who may or may not go Tempest)

I’m excited about:

-Guild arena and guild halls.
-New elite specializations.
-Gliding.
-WvW will finally be active again, these past few weeks have been sooooo boring as most guilds & servers are taking a break.
-PvP

My mood was soured when I learned I’ll have to grind hero points to unlock elite specs. I really was hoping to head into the HoT expansion playing new elite specs rather than still spend time playing characters/builds I have played for the past 3 years. I have 12 characters, I was planning on playing them all by building them differently with elite spec builds. But now I doubt I’ll unlock elite specs on more than 1-2 of them. I’m more of a WvW player and I’m not grinding hundreds of ranks per character just to unlock them either.

So to summarize my HoT mood, I’m excited and can’t wait to get back into action. But my excitement was definitely rained on by Anet’s decision to gate elite specs behind hero points. I would’ve been fine gating cosmetic aspect of the elite specs behind hero points. But the elite specs themselves, and the skills that come with them? That’s just a bit much.

“I disagree with people, so I must mock them. Because there’s no way they could have possibly had a point”

Did you seriously think that people just complain because they had to? I mean for them to care so much they must have cared strongly about some aspect of the game.

“Everything Anet does is perfect and can never be questioned”

Really? Look at most content releases? Even if some of it is good, there can be issues.

“People either want to work for something, or not work for it all”

That’s plain false. There’s many levels of reward and compensation in this world. The degree of it matters, and that remains an issue worldwide.

“Also, somehow let’s ignore all the positive comments”

Just because someone complains doesn’t mean they don’t have things to enjoy or look forward too. Life ain’t black and white. Just because you curse the pothole in front of you doesn’t mean the whole world’s an ugly place.

See, I can respond to invisible people too.

Congrats to Anet for making an expansion to a great game. May you guys take the game in a exciting direction even if people are cranky in one way or another.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,

My summary:

GUILD HALLS AND AN END TO THE TYRANNY OF OF WAITING FOR GUILD MISSIONS TO CRAFT! YEAH!

I don’t even care if the story is bad at this point. That guild hall system is sweet and working up those new specs “for real” after the beta testing is going to be rather surreal. Diving in to a place specifically to learn new awesome skills and stuff? It’s like a big ol’ GW1 hug all over again.

I am really excited for the launch but still think that the requirement to have all trait lines completed to get elite is a dumb requirement. Let’s look at the ranger class for example. What does the skirmishing and marksmanship trait lines have in common with the druid trait line? Doesn’t seem to be a close relationship between them. I don’t understand why you would have to have those trait lines mastered to learn to be a druid. It’s just a waste of 120 hero points. I don’t mind playing content at all. I have over 5000 hours played. I don’t like an arbitrary rule wasting my earned hero points. The first 12 hero challenges in HoT will just be to make up for my unused trait lines and that is frustrating. With that said I still love the game and hope for better decisions from anet in the future.
