Disagree. The items only have a short term effect on your character and don’t harm the economy in any way. The items that DO have a long term effect can be bought with gems… The 4000 gems can, that way, be spent on more cosmetic and useful items like eternal harvesting sickles or picks or axes.

I’d definitely pay €100 for a package like that.

Unlocking LS1 and LS2 I thought is a must, but I prefer something better like other companies doing their business. For 100 € lifetime upgrades and monthly 500 Gems. STO can do this for their customers, why didn’t get A-Net this also managed.

Best solution is still the pricing peopel wanted to pay like 30 €, 45 € und 75 € but not more. And we don’t want to buy everything again at all 2 years. That’s really smells like paying a monthly fee for the game.

I’d much rather:

Standard €34,99
Heart of Thorns expansion (+ core game)
An additional character slot to try out the new Revenant profession

Deluxe €49,99- €59,99
Heart of Thorns expansion (+ core game)
An additional two character slots
Miniature Revenant Rytlock
Revenant Finisher
Mordremoth’s Bane Guild Hall Decoration
Heart of Thorns Glider skin

Ultimate €75,99-€85,99
Heart of Thorns expansion (+ core game)
An additional two character slots
Miniature Revenant Rytlock
Revenant Finisher
Mordremoth’s Bane Guild Hall Decoration
Heart of Thorns Glider skin
€40 worth of gems

I don’t need more bonus’s I would just like a lower price point because it’s a reasonably large expense in comparison to what I normally pay for games (The last time I paid more than 15$ for a game was when I bought GW2 collectors edition 3 years ago) .

This is a trick question, right? You’re asking consumers if they’d like more for their money?

For me, though, the fluff is not interesting. I’m still waiting to find out what HoT actually contains. If the content/features are worth $50 to me, I’m in, regardless of Express items (which I almost never use) and extra slots.

I dunno man. It’s not like we’re sitting in front of a marketing guy and know exactly what we’re allowed to give away. Its a lot more complicated that “I want this and this and this.” Ideally I’d want the moon for my money, but it won’t happen. I’m content with what we have.

Instant Level 80 is actually an interesting idea though. Wow’s already set that as precedent, and could let new and lapsed players get right into the new content. Plus we have plenty of players ready to do that anyways with experience scrolls, so it’s more of a bonus.

Well.. after I leave out everything I already have, or don’t need / have interest in…

That’s certainly possible. I don’t use the ‘express’ things any more than I use various ‘boosters’ – the free ones I got along the way are just cluttering my bank. I think they added that option for compressing them into generic ones for 10 silver to the minority like me. It’s really useful for me.

The exception is a couple of ‘crafting boosters’ I used on some characters when leveling crafts from 400 to 500 – and I still have over a dozen freebies of those cluttering the bank.

I don’t need any ‘insta 80’ or ‘unlock waypoints’ items.. I prefer to play the game instead. I don’t need any more character slots – I got 8 originally to have one for each class, but I find I have no interest in warrior or engineer, so now I have 2 of them free. Character slot isn’t entirely useless though, I can always leave a character to some mining spot or the like, and get something that way just by logging in. It just isn’t something I feel like I’d actually need for something.

I have all LWS2 episodes open from having logged into game, I have no interest in miniatures or finishers – I don’t play PvP anyway. Glider skin I would take if it was free, but it doesn’t really add any ‘value’ for me. Glider is so central to HoT that I’m certain there will be other ways to get various glider skins, and I’d rather have one that I got from some achievement through playing the game. As for guild hall decorations, I don’t see the point – guilds are generally not for single person, so why would there be account-specific item for guild decoration? Beyond that, I’d rather see the guild decorations reflect the achievements of the guild – not the amount of money the members tossed into expansion.

Bank tabs I could use – I originally got all of them opened, but didn’t go for the extra ones when they increased the cap. Same with the material storage extras. And I didn’t expand any of the character inventories, so I could use those too. I guess I’m just not much into the fluff.

Did I miss anything?

The Ultimate one is WAY too much, the 4k gems + “extra bank tab” would be enough.

You’ve got to be kidding… there is no way in hell they would offer that much. Yeah, sure it would be great, but Anet is the last place you’d get that much value for your money.

No, they wouldn’t. They’d have the same or a tiny bit more. If a co can do something that is so obvious & make more money, they’d do it. The fact is that’s not how ppl spend money. It’s just not. $100 is a hard cap for most people regardless of value. & the ppl that can spend more will spend more in the gem store. So if something sounds like an “obvious” way to make money, you’re wrong.

Bank tab? Inventory tab? I think most people who would buy the ‘ultimate’ edition will probably already have all bank tabs open. They might want ‘total makeover kit’ instead. Or maybe something else.

By adding 4k gems, they already included ‘everything from gem shop’ into the bundle, just in limited quantity. If you want to add ‘more stuff’ that’s available in gem store, you basically want ‘more gems’ on top of the 4k.

That’s the thing about gems – they are the best possible value for gem shop, because they are the wild card. They are exactly what you wanted to get from gem store. Heck, even I can’t deny their value, because I know there is something I could use in there. And in the unlikely case that there wasn’t, there’s good chance that sometime in the future there will be. As a last resort, they can convert into gold and get you something that way.

To me it would be pretty simple: For basic edition, add 1500 gems. For deluxe add 4000 gems. For ultimate add 7000 gems (instead of 4000). That would give them enough extra value. Or adjust that a bit and make 1000 gems a ‘vet reward’ if you link the key to existing account.

I know many people want all sorts of fluff. Titles, minis, glider skins, whatever else. That’s fine, and if it’s exclusive to the package it’ll make them more wanted. But to me none of that stuff really increases the value of the package when I consider whether it’s worth getting or not. The exceptions are rare, although they exist.

We’ve seen these arguments for years. Gamers thinking that “if they just made xyz cheaper/if they just add more value they’d make so much money”. It’s just not that simple. I talked to people who’s job it was to maximize hour by hour the income for the games they worked on. I asked, “why don’t they just make xyz cheaper, everyone would buy it!” he said that it almost never equals out to make things cheaper or give too much away. You can drop prices way down & the # of new ppl that buy the product doesn’t make a positive net increase.

History tells us that if business were obvious, everyone would be successful. Since most cos are not successful, then we know that “obvious” =/= success.

Too be clear though, I still think the game is too expensive. But I don’t know if it would be good business to lower the price.

They can still add more value even if they don’t reduce the price (To be fair I’ve no idea why they priced it so high, the physical edition doesn’t even come with a disk, so development costs must have gotten out of hand? I guess.)

I mean for adding 800 gems it realistically costs them maybe 50c per unit in potential lost gem purchases and adds 10$ in value to the player.
Even lower would be adding specific items, like the character slots or gem store clothing because players would still need to purchase other gem store items they needed.

The one thing i liked A LOT about what you said is opening up living story 2 with one of the editions. I would have thought it comes standard but seems that it doesn’t. The ENTIRE EXPANSION continues on where the current LS story left off. Not providing that to any new player would be silly infact it would be stupid. This means that either new players get into the game then see Oh wait i need to pay 1600 gems to unlock the entire story Or existing players will complain about the fact they had to pay to get access to this.

The best balance for this would be to open up LS story by default for new players but force them to complete it before they get access to the new HOTS maps . That means that the existing players base " gets the advantage " of accessing the are at least 4-8 hours before the new players can,

( my 4-8 hours is spot on as i looked at people who bought game in special and already have a lvl 80 character but didnt purchase the LS2 . Those who did can not be punished as they spent Gems on it )

Brand new players would need to get to lvl 80 and explore all the new areas in any case so it will take them a good couple of days.

Anet said they didn’t want new players to have this massive financial barrier to get into the game and if a 1600 gem purchase isn’t a financial barrier i don’t know what is

The problem here is it’s the ‘core game’ deal all over again. It’s either 1600 gems worth of value for you, or none. It makes the whole deal so that it has different value for different people. And creates the exact same issue of ‘but I already paid for that!’, which was one major point of discontent with the whole expansion offer.

What you can do is buy the ultimate edition, and use part of the 4000 gems to open the LS2. If you prefer, think of it as ultimate with 2400 gems and LS2 opened – and if you already had LS2 open, you get 1600 gems refunded (or, 200 per chapter that you had open).

What I suggested, would actually have brought enough gems even to deluxe to open all episodes of LS2. The standard edition doesn’t need it opened because it’s the bare bones ‘HoT only’ edition, and LS2 is not part of HoT.

Of course this whole thread is moot, and academic at best. Obviously none of this is going to happen.

What you suggest is… uh, what? New players should be ‘punished’ by being forced to play the game for a few hours? They have the disadvantage of.. being required to experience 4 years of content for at least 4 hours? I don’t get it. I really don’t.

It’s like you’d say someone goes to ice cream bar, and instead of being required to pay for the ice cream, they should be required to actually eat at least a spoon of ice cream before they are allowed to try the cherry.

The way I see it the expansion is like the new sports jersey for your favorite soccer team. Irrespective of how much you spent on the previous jersey you still need to pay in full for the new Style but you do not pay extra as a first timer for the development of the previous jersey you all get the same for the funds paid.

So how We are goign about it now is saying that if you do not provide proof of a previous jersey purchase tehy will remove a certain logo and you need to pay to stick it on.

It is a very silly business model. I played the LS and got it for FREE and all i had to do was log in. The new players didn’t have that chance but sure as hell expect to have a good experience. If Anet says nothing and by the time the new players get to the living story they need to PAY to get to the content they have already paid for by getting the expansion people will go MENTAL.

At some time asking the masses for advise is simply not an option and having an unhappy few is unavoidable but its better for the logevity of the game.

lets say i do purchase the ultimate and i can afford it. I now go and play those LS missions and I am the ONLY one in drytop. My money did not buy me happiness because this is a MMO and you need people around you. So even paying extra has made it a very terrible experience ( unless you are a one man show ) And on the other end of the scale the player who cant afford to pay the extra $20 to access this area is also unhappy.

So the way I see it it will be a win win for Anet to allow the LS 2 season for all with the expansion.

Just for the record, I was never very happy about the requirement to log in at specific times to grab the LS2 chapters – but I did jump through the hoops to get them anyway. I would have prefered to be allowed to play the game at my own times and my own pace. Would have rather had it so they unlock as long as you have an active account at the time. But that aside…

Yes, I can understand what you say. Living story is one major part of the game’s content. However the whole point of the decision of putting them out free for limited time, was to make it so that anyone who came along later on will have to pay to get them. There was absolutely no. other. reason. for the decision to make it so. You are basically asking for that decision to be reversed – after some people paid the price.

What comes to paying for content they already paid for – by anet’s definition they didn’t. The base game was freebie. :p And frankly right now in a way it is – because regardless of if you had it prior to HoT or not, you pay the same price for HoT. If you told people who already paid for the base game, already paid separately for missed LS episodes, to now pay additionally for the expansion – and meanwhile giving others the base game AND the LS episodes for free as a sider.. I think it’s a different group that will go mental – judging by a few hundred threads a few days ago. And I think with fairly good justification.

Living story episodes were solo content (although you could bring others into the instance with you if you wanted to). There’s no danger of any open world areas to be ‘empty’ even if a lot of people won’t have access to the LS episodes. What comes to advice in getting through them.. just getting through the episodes shouldn’t even need any. And if you need instructions on getting some of the achievements, zone chat is rarely enough. For that there’s dulfy. The knowledge is out there if you need it.

Lol, that’s just overdoing it and plain greediness.
Don’t you think you overdid it a little bit? Imagine having everyone in that first week use up their expresses and now imagine that mini map. And ‘’unlock all waypoints’’ ? That doesn’t even exist in game as an item and is just plain lazy, just go out there and unlock them all, it doesn’t take that long trust me.

IM jsut thinking that if a new player starts he wil be lsot as to why we are going to the maguma? What led us to it? And the only way he can do it is by PAYING ? Anet very clearly says that the base game comes free with the expansion. no little star * added with a foot note reading. The base game is free but a $20 gem purchase is required to get into the story ?

I’m still standing by my opinion saying it will be very silly to not include it.

If the standard version comes with character slot baseline, no pre-purchase only bs attached then i’d call it a hard bargain, but possible one.

As it is i’m not touching HoT out of principle, until it goes 10$ lower then it’s pre-order price (their price – character slot price that should be in there no questions asked).

And I’m not saying that you are wrong exactly, more like that you are trying to heal a stubbed toe by cutting off the foot. Throwing even more value for new players, in a form that would not add anything to people who already acquired the access to LS2 by either logging in at appointed times, or paid for it through gems.. would add more problems and bad blood than it would solve.

Keep an eye on living story while you wait, though. I haven’t yet found any info on how it will be ‘delivered’ past HoT launch. There’s a possibility that the chapters open for only people who log in with HoT registered while each chapter is active (similar to how LS2 seasons came), and those who do not have HoT would have to pay extra for them later on.

I’m hoping that’s not the case, just saying that it’s possible. Of course if you don’t care about LS to begin with, then it’s a non-issue for you.

I got no problems with new players getting LS2 for free, and i had to pay for half of mine (wasn’t playing gw2 at that time).

Bad blood is gonna happen when they come knocking on that pay gate. The rage will be real.

This “what if…”-thread is redundant and unnecessary – they won’t change it again. Besides, the “Ultimate” Edition is way too much. The only good addition in this whole post is the Season 2.

I doubt it’s going to be a big issue. People are used to games having paid add-on content. Having the base game bundled into the expansion gives a great deal for new players, and a little bit of research will show that the LS2 is not unconditionally free to anyone. There’s plenty of free content for a new player, including the personal story. There just isn’t enough justification to get on the barricades for it to spread.

I actually don’t really understand you. You paid for base game, and say you had to pay half of your LS2 episodes because you ’weren’t there’, and you don’t sound like you are bothered by it. Why would new players who got the base game as a free sider be bothered by having to pay for LS2 episodes (provided they want them), if you aren’t yourself?

As much as I believe the ultimate tier could be a bit more attractive, I’m quite happy with my discounted gems. Some consumables or an instant 80 item would be nice though, for revenant.

Because I knew the deal – “be there to grab it for free, if you miss it you pay”. They obviously weren’t there, but also aren’t being informed about by a-net, so for some of them that will be a nasty surprise. Especially after “free base game”. Suddenly they see LS2 which was part of base game and it’s not free….

Pretty sure STO only did it because the game was flopping hard…like real hard.

this.

Cryptic offer their players perm subs for huge fees to bolster their short term profits. Were they in a better spot, they would simply never offer this, as in the long term, they lose out massively. Dealing with these offers means that the developers assume that the game’s life span is not going to be a long one.

No, not exactly. Yes, Cryptic was doing pretty bad, then PWI took over and things changed. Their business model is pay-to-win. You buy a single tier 6 ship and it costs you 3000 gems. You want full power out of that ship you buy a bundle of 3 and combine their consoles – for 6000 gems. You want to play all factions with the ship (rom, kling, fed), you pay 12,000 gems for the bundle. That’s ONE type of tier 6 ship.

Now if you want the real valuable stuff, it’s always in lockboxes. The overall consensus is it’s about 0,5% drop rate or less from lockboxes. You do the math. You’d commonly hear it referred to as ‘Lockbox Online’, or ‘Star Trek: The Casino’.

That’s the common Perfect World International model, and Cryptic was funneled into it after PWI took over.

I had LTS there back when it was still monthly sub game, before it fell. Still visit there for a while every year or so because I’ve accumulated a few thousand ‘free’ gems to blow away. But the money-grabbing in that game is from different planet. 500 gems there is nothing.

The equivalent for GW2 might be if they introduced a tier of armor and weapons beyond ascended/legendary, but it was only available from gem store. Weapons 6,000 gems each, armor sets for 12,000 gems per set – but they’d introduce a set with slightly better innate bonuses every few months.

Let’s take a look at your Ultimate package.

Ultimate €99,99

  • Heart of Thorns expansion (+ core game)
  • An additional character slot to try out the new Revenant profession
  • A personal Merchant express, Bank access express and Trading post express for a week to start off your adventures in the Jungle!
  • Access to Season 2 of the Living Story if not unlocked
  • Miniature Revenant Rytlock
  • Revenant Finisher
  • Mordremoth’s Bane Guild Hall Decoration
  • Heart of Thorns Glider skin
    EXTRA
  • 4000 Gems (€50,00 value)
  • One “instant level 80” item
  • One “unlock all waypoints” item for all waypoints up to level 79 area’s (excludes Heart of Thorns maps)
  • One “extra bank tab” unlock
  • One “extra inventory tab” unlock

Fortunately, your Euros seem to convert 1:1 to US Dollars, at least as far as Arenanet’s pricing is concerned. Because I don’t have a Euro key on my keyboard.

Character slot: 800 gems ($10)
Bank, TP, Merchant express: 120 gems separately, but there’s a 100-gem bundle for them… and this is one-USE, not one-week. You gonna ask them to code a new item to give you for free? ($1.25)
Season 2: up to 1280 gems ($16)
Miniature: Usually 500 gems for the unique ones ($6.25)
Finisher: 500-800 gems; I’ll be very generous and assume this one’s 500 ($6.25); one like this would most likely cost 800, comparing the types that cost that
4000 Gems: 4000 gems ($50)
Bank Tab: 600 gems ($7.50)
Bag Slot: 400 gems (one character only) ($5)

Value of the above: $102.25.

Remaining items on the list:
Heart of Thorns (+GW2)
Guild Hall decoration
Glider Skin
Insta-80 item
Insta-waypoint-unlock

Do you STILL think your suggestion is fair? You want Anet to pay YOU to play the expansion, and you want them to code, from scratch, items to instantly raise you to level 80 and unlock all the waypoints, because who needs to PLAY the game to accomplish anything? Surely not YOU.

What is EVEN the point of insta-80? Of waypoint unlocks? WHAT need is there for either? You don’t even NEED the former, because this game hands out experience items like candy!

Arenanet staff put thousands of man-hours into making this game. They did so because they were under the assumption they would be paid a wage that allowed them to eat and keep a place to live. According to YOU, they should contribute money to YOUR pocket, so you can play video games.

… … You know, I can’t even go any farther. If I don’t send this post right now, I’m going to fly clear off the handle. As much as I dislike this forum’s overuse of a certain word, right now I’m finding it suits you most admirably. I leave you with the following final advice: If you don’t think you’re getting enough content for your money, then don’t buy the expansion; you can continue playing GW2 forever (er, as long as it exists) without it, they’ve made that clear myriad times.
