So this happened earlier today. I ran into another player in Fields of Ruin while I was out gathering soft wood, and he/she commented on my Mastery rank, which is currently 150. They basically asked how much CoF farming I had to do on my way to getting my rank so high. Which annoys me, as I haven’t done a single second of CoF farming, or spider farming in Verdant Brink, or any other manner of farming – all I’ve done is play the game (quite a lot, admittedly), helped along here and there with various methods of xp boosting.

So is this a thing, now? The assumption that a high or reasonably high Mastery rank automatically means that player must have CoF/spider farmed? Which is pretty sad, if true. There’s supposed to be some degree of prestige to Mastery ranks, at least as I perceive it, and while I don’t really mind if other players want to farm CoF/spiders for hours to max their Mastery lines (… ok, I’ll admit it, it bothers me a little bit) I do mind people assuming that’s how I earned mine.

• A polite “Not how I earned my points, sorry.” would suffice.
• People will generally project their own situations onto others and make assumptions; e.g., “The only way I’d have rank 150 was if I farmed CoF 24/7, ergo ‘he’ must have.”
• It might also help to not care what random strangers on the internet say.

My worst one was when I was doing a dungeon instance with a guild mate for tokens for her Legendary. I inadvertently aggro’ed a wurm and the guy we were following blew up and said “Somebody with 10k Achievement Points should know what they are doing”. I had to politely remind him that AP’s are not obtained solely through dungeons and promptly left the instance.

Well, it kind of brings to light the fact that the whole Mastery System is little more than a Vanity System – like grinding for skins.

Having a 150 Rank (no matter how earned) doesn’t automatically mean that you are a good player – it just means that you took the TIME to earn them.

I don’t know why there are displayed ranks in the first place, but I’ve just kinda gone along with it cause it seemed inconsequential.

I feel it would make more sense if maxing a mastery track gave you a track-based title that you could choose to display or not display. There could be titles for mastery rank as well (ex: a title for 150).

I dunno. I’m just saying, why make it into a level thing when mastery levels are meaningless to begin with. It’s a weird design choice to me.

Lol, I remember in the early days, before anyone really had Map Completion, that we WvW players who had MC felt that displaying the “button” in our tag would draw undue attention on us in the WvW maps.

But, since the game’s turned into little more than a grind for skins and titles, what else can you expect….
