Your personal hype level is completely 100% irrelevant. First of all, I don’t see the value of keeping people hyped in the first place. I think it’s a bad idea. They need the hype toward the end, not now. When they need hype, they’ll create it.

Secondly hype just means people get over excited and judge everything by the highest standard. Most games end up being treated unfairly by fans, because fans have hyped themselves into a state where nothing real could satisfy them. Most MMOs, just about all of them, take time to get off the ground. But fans are hyped and don’t give them that chance.

Most MMOs improve over the first year or two, and fans tend to move away and never look back. And people wonder why companies are reluctant to invest an creating an MMO.

Since it’s the gaming companies CREATING that hype, very consciously, your argument is not really relevant.

It’s a marketing trend, really. They know that the initial interest is the greatest (new! shiny! must have!), so they boost that interest to maximize the amount of early sales, thus recouping the development cost and (usually) making a good initial profit.

And they usually get it wrong. They promise features that never make it to live, post videoclips that do not really represent actual in-game experience, and publish before polish (or even bugfixing) is completed. And then they wonder about the backlash of angry/disappointed customers.

Fans create the hype? Sure.

That’s why they have built a show around the announcement, made teaser trailers, saying in every announcement it’s gonna be “AWSUM”, etc..

The very definition of hype says you are wrong:
Hype (derived from hyperbole) is promotion, especially promotion consisting of exaggerated claims.

If you are announcing a smallish expansion more than 6 months before it’s even released (announcement on 24 January 2015 in this case), trickle-feed your audience features that go into that expansion, give excited interviews making much of those features, without actually saying all that much about the facts of that expansion, then yes, you are most definitely hyping that product.

And yes, hype is definitely a mechanism used by marketing departments. They know they’re doing it, they have a purpose in doing it, they have exact methods in how to create the maximum amount of it. And I’m pretty certain you can google all this, there are training courses on the topic, as well as (long) forum discussions on what not to do.

If anything, ANet fails at doing this, though. They’ve made some remarkable public relations blunders, and are not consistent enough in feeding new information in an attractive enough way. Which is why the ‘under-hype’ or ‘fail of hype’

There may be some cases where where fans create it, like when datamining stuff “gets out”. But this is not the case.

In this case Anet made the announcements, the shows, the demos etc.. thus Anet is the hyper, and the player is the hypee.

So why are so many fans saying they’re not hyped, if Anet is creating this? Look at the thread you’re posting in. Is this the only person saying this.

Anet has said relatively little about the expansion. There are as many people right now say it’s not worth it as it is worth it. Anet releases a couple of blog posts a week with information.

I’m not seeing hype there. I’m seeing information.

Fans see the information and a small percentage of them get hyped. Those that are more experienced know that the information is just that, and it can not only change, but it’s also not complete. Until we have all the information, we just don’t know.

So some fans get hyped and some don’t get hyped and they’re looking at the same kitten ed stuff. It’s like watching a commercial for a new KFC burger and getting hyped for it. You might think, that’ looks good, but you wouldn’t be hyped until you tried it.

Fans are demanding information. Anet is providing information at what some people call a glacial pace. Pretty sad if that’s what you call hype.

Cause hype is like an erection. It’s great and easy initially, but you can’t keep it up for ages unless there is enough stimulus.

With the announcement of HoT Anet created hype. New maps, challanging content, new specializations, new weapons, GvG, new WvW maps woooot! All this wrapped with shows with boomstick and Jenna’s voice actress.

Then it turns out it’s 1 speialization, and 1 weapon, and not really GvG and 1 new PvP map. And we still don’t know anything about the new map(s) or the challenging content. Naturally people assume (at least I do), if there is no info about it, they can expect the minimum.

And with time passing by, it gets flaccid.

If people hyped themselves, then they would. What’s the difference? Even with no info, hype levels would be the same, no? Yet more and more posts are arising, people losing interest in the game, and losing players before the big renewal is not a good thing. Yes, some will return, but some are lost forever.

Well that’s a shame that you’re so blinded by your need to hype that you can’t just watch something and accept what they’re saying without embellishing it in your mind.

I’m not sure how old you are, but from my teens, I knew if I saw a commercial on TV and something said it tastes great, I might or might not like it. It might taste great to some people and be lousy to me.

So let’s look at the last article about HoT on the website…here’s a link:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/meet-the-mist-champions/

I read through that whole article and I’m not so sure I’d say that’s hype. It’s telling us about what to expect from changes to the new PvP format. Anet isn’t saying this is the best thing since sliced bread.

Naturally it’s made to appeal to fans of the game, because there’d be no point in not appealing to fans of the game. With any luck, you make a game to appeal to players.

But there’s nothing in that article that denotes hype, even though some people may have been hyped over it.

There have been a couple of appearances at conventions, regular podcasts, but if this isn’t hype. I’ve seen hype.

Sure devs are excited by what they’re creating. I’m a writer. I’m excited by some of the stuff I’ve created. And if I talk about that and that excitement shows through, am I hyping it? Or am I sharing it with enthusiasm?

And if I tell someone they’re going to like something I write and they don’t, does that make it less good?

What you call hype is called promotion. Any company that doesn’t promote is a bad company. They will soon be out of business. You should be aware enough to be able to look at a promotion and judge it critically, rather than allow yourself to get hyped.

Or do you watch Air Jordan commercials and really think you can fly?

Oh the stories I could tell you. . . .

Regardless, I do agree about the lack of hype. But, the common belief among some is that the lack of hype is because there’s a lack of content to hype about. We’re not talking Guild Halls and other fluff, but the actual stuff and the amount the community will be playing in the future.

At this point, we don’t even know the exact number of maps. But, again, I do agree the public relations, as far as promotion, is lacking.

Stuff that’s too long to qoute…

1. If I accept it for what it is, I won’t buy it. Currently there is little to no appeal in HoT. That is what people are asking for. If you don’t have anything you can hype with that’s pretty bad, and that seems to be the case.

2. Cool link. And that’s exactly the problem. Releasing info that only PvP-ers may care about, and most likely even from them only a low percentage does. Sorry, but if you set the hype train rolling with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxLkfXwxLTs , then don’t be surprised if your fans are gonna be dissapointed in such articles as you linked.

3. Not sure what an Air Jordan is, not really a thing where I live, but I’m guessing it’s shoes. I’m pretty sure tho, if you go out and say to people: “Hey these shoes/game coming out whenever is average or maybe even sub-par, buy ’em!” it’s not gonna work too well, and you are not gonna get peole hyped (again, you are creating the hype, it doesn’t matter if they bite or not).

What Anet did was:
- Annnounce shoes to be super, awesometastic
- Said wait for details
- Sloooooooooowly announced that it has a front
- And it has shoelaces
- And you can wear it
- On your foot
- It also has a back
- Wait for details
- …

I’m no marketing genius, but I feel it’s high time to remind your “fans” why your product is worth buying.

Ps.: If you are a writer feel free to use my comparison to hype, I quite like it.

Like Vayne I don’t understand this idea that it’s important to be constantly excited.

I was extremely excited when I first heard about HoT (I literally cheered) and seeing that preview video for the first time was amazing.

Shortly after that I calmed down a lot and settled into debating the pros and cons of what we know, and how much we don’t know, with other players and since then my mood and feelings towards the expansion have varied (the most extreme have been going back to thinking I can’t wait to play it and wondering if I want to get it at all when I first saw the pre-purchase prices).

Am I constantly excited about HoT? No of course not.
Am I excited for it right at this exact moment? No, not really.
Is this a problem? No.

I know it’s coming, I know I want it (I did pre-purchase eventually), I know I’ll get to play bits of it now and again in betas and the entire thing when it comes out, which makes me happy in general. Being constantly excited about something that may well be months away just sounds stressful to me.

Also regarding all the people saying that based on what we’ve been told and/or how they’re feeling right now they wouldn’t buy HoT: that’s absolutely fine, for you and for Anet.

I completely agree we don’t have much information yet. I feel like pre-purchasing was a gamble at this point but I decided in my case they’d have to announce something extremely stupid for me not to get it. (Plus for me and my personal financial situation buying it now worked better than buying it in a few months when it’s probably going to be released.)

All you miss out on if you don’t pre-purchase is the title and guaranteed beta access. So unless you’re a hard core title hunter or can’t bear the thought of missing the betas there is absolutely no harm in waiting until you can make an informed decision. Pre-purchase isn’t going anywhere and once the expansion is out it’ll still be on sale so you can buy it whenever you want to. It doesn’t have to be now and it probably shouldn’t be when you’re at your most excited for the expansion (because that’s not a good state to make a sensible financial decision).

Like Vayne I don’t understand this idea that it’s important to be constantly excited.

I would say that it boils down to the underlying question, particularly in light of the HoT pre-purchase sales: “Is it all worth it?” Hype creates the illusion of content and value. Hype generates sales. We want to want to play and buy, and ArenaNet wants us to buy and play. I, for example, want to pre-purchase, much like I did for the original game, but I have not seen much evidence or generated hype. Plus, ArenaNet fudged up when it came to the Dragonhunter, which first-degree murdered a lot of the hype I initially had for HoT.

But we’re the hype. Anet isn’t really saying this is the best thing since sliced bread and the gave a very brief overview of what was going to be in the expansion on day one. In theory, there really was nothing left to hype.

In fact, the hype so far has been limited to Guild Halls and the launch announcement. If anything the game has been underhyped.

That’s my point. ArenaNet is doing a fairly bad job of generating hype for the purposes of their sales. We are the hype or, rather, the lack thereof. We lack hype because ArenaNet has not provided much to get us hyped about in terms of content. They have given us a few elite specializations, morsels and crumbs of the Revenant and masteries, a new PvP map/type and a new WvW map (both updated regardless of whether you get the expansion), guild halls, and not much else in terms of meaty content. And some of ArenaNet “hype-generating” announcements have been complete duds or waves of negative press, as was the case with the Dragonhunter e-spec and the pre-purchase announcements.

Which is why I’m disagreeing with the people who are claiming Anet is responsible for over-hyping this product.

I am no longer excited for the expansion.

Do you sincerely believe ANet cares and will respond? This is just a meaningless troll/whine post with absolutely no point offered.

Not caring=Not caring: even if meaningful, meaningless, reasonable or whine, troll or not troll, point offered or no point offered, include constructive or not constructive, respond or not respond because in the end, it will still result in Arena net Not caring.

to be honest, the marketing campaign for gw2 HOT should have been : announcement XPAC , 1 week later, BAM its out.

that 1 week will drive hype and thirst way up and the sales after that will be insane. people will be shouting “TAKE MY MONEY” on the streets , at home, throwing cash at their screens.

anet wouldnt need to come out with trailers, teasers and kitten. take a leaf out of beyonce’s sudden album. the xpac would’ve sold based on the guild wars name itself.

Because you (and most people i know of) are doing it wrong. People tend to get hyped insanely easily and then their hype dies down and are immediately looking for some other source of that hyped feeling.

Whereas it is much better to build up your own little “hype” over time, so that you are more and more excited about the object of your desire the closer you get to it.

But then again, it seems to be something quickly becoming part of our culture to be overly excited about some things, just for the sake of… i don’t know… adrenaline rush?

1. If most people are doing it wrong, that means probably you are doing it wrong. The point and meaning of hype is to get excited easily.

2. Since when is it the costumers role to get him/herself hyped? Shoud I also do the advertising for the product or what?

Again, it’s about promotion . . . or lack thereof. No one in their right mind is going to say ANet’s doing a grand job promoting this expansion. The pre-order fiasco bears this out.

Right now, it feels more damage control more than anything.

Gone to Reddit.

1. Hey that lemming mentality is really nice. Everybody else seems to be enjoying the fall, let’s all jump off this cliff. But i actually did not say you should not get hyped, i said you should get hyped closer to your goal.
2. The GW2 community has always hyped itself like nothing i’ve seen before. Then later on blamed Anet for hyping their product or ideas.

All i am saying is, instead of being hyped (or wanting to be hyped) try a different approach.

1. Special snowflake mentality is no better. There is (in most cases) a pretty solid reason why people do what they do. Evolution and stuff seems to prove that.

2. To be honest, all I am arguing about is the source of hype, which I believe to be the company that does the promotion, as I explained dozens of times before. The current hyperide for HoT has come to halt if not crashed.

People want meaningful info. Cause if you don’t give it, then it’s a natural assumption that there was originally nothing behind the hype.

(Sidenote: E3 announced an FFVII remake – my favorite game of all time. Was I excited when I heard it? Sure was. Am I “hyped”? Not really, I can safely assume it’s at least 2 years before it gets released. Not sure what Squenix does differently tho – probably it’s that I know I’m gonna get solid content)

In that case maybe I’m misunderstanding the word ‘hype’.

To me that means hyper-excited. As in literally jumping up and down, cheering, cannot sleep for excitement kind of excited. Which is not a state I’d expect anyone to maintain for more than a few hours, and I don’t think it’d be a good idea to try. Certainly not for weeks or months.

What you’re talking about seems more like simply being certain HoT is something you want to buy and play. Which to me is a very different feeling and not something that should require constant external reinforcement (even from the company selling the thing you want), or even something you need to be constantly aware of.

In that sense I guess you could say I am ‘hyped’. I know, and have known basically since the first announcement, that I want HoT. I pre-purchased it already (I even got the Ultimate edition, but that’s because in a round about way it saves me money) and I will probably go out of my way to play it on the first day. But I’m not constantly hyped.

To me it’s similar to going to a concert. Music is a big part of my life and a show by one of my favourite artists is one of the major events of my year. So I’ll be ridiculously excited when one is announced. But then I calm down and wait for details. I get a bit excited again when planning to get tickets (in the UK gigs can sell out extremely fast so you have to be ready the moment tickets go on sale to be sure of getting them), when I know I’ve got them, when I’m making plans to meet friends on the day (or the day before if one of us is travelling long-distance to get there), and of course in the week or so leading up to the actual show. When it starts, when the band comes on stage I’ll be literally jumping up and down and screaming at the top of my lungs (I mainly listen to rock music so this is entirely appropriate behaviour for the situation).

But for most of the time in between the announcement and the show I’m relatively calm. I’m probably not even thinking about it the majority of the time, I’m going on with my life as normal. And that’s not a bad thing. It doesn’t mean I’m not sure I want to go any more, it just means it’s too far in the future for me to think about it all the time and in the mean time other things affect my thoughts and mood.

It’s the same with HoT. How excited I am has almost not bearing on how sure I am that I want it (although obviously wanting it is part of the reason I get excited).
