Someone had told me once as I had bought in the first beta of GW2 I would not need to buy the expansions that would come out for the game in order to play it.

You don’t NEED to buy it to continue playing the game.

However, you do need to buy it if you want to have access to the new content, profession etc.

Thats right you dont have to buy the expansion but you wont be able to play anything that come with said expansion then mate

I’m not sure where you heard that but it’s not true.

Someone may have gotten confused with some of Anet’s advertising about the game being subscription free, which said something about how once you’ve bought it you don’t have to pay anything else to play. But it was quite specifically talking about the game you’ve bought, not all future expansion packs.
