I'm calling it
whats a WTS???
World Tournament Series,
when the top PvPers juke it out for 5k$, at Gamescom in other words.
whats a WTS???
World Tournament Series. A PvP tournament that, in my opinion, most GW2 players don’t care about.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/events/world-tournament-series/#info
The final is August 8th in Cologne, Germany.

More of you should care more tbh, so a few decent lads could win big money that could change their lives

And what does that do for the game as a whole? A few people win money in a tournament most people don’t care about. I get it, Anet seems dedicated to trying to make GW2 PvP a Esport by sinking time and money into these tournaments. However, I’m betting 95% of the player base couldn’t care less. Heck, as seen many don’t even know such tournaments exist aside from the occasional, “Here is a tournament. This message will close when you reload the forum.” messages. I’m guessing most people just reload the page and forget about it.

Well, if ANET is sinking money into it, means there is something worthwhile investing in it.
Yeah, but tournaments money sells games, big proven fact.
Exciting game, lots of advertising, lots of hype, lots of competition,.
Anyway I don’t care it is for Grouch to decide on these things.
This should probably be merged with the other thread on release dates.
That could turn into a version of the joke, “what if?”
What if ANet announced the date of HoT.
But no one noticed because they announced it during the WTS and no one was watching it.
ANet may give it to you.

There is hype about GW2 PvP? Wat?
Watching the same two teams fight it out is stale, boring, and does nothing for me (and I’m assuming a majority of GW2 players as well).
GW2 will never achieve mainstream eSports popularity with its current model.
But to the OP, I hope you’re right.
Eh I’d guess the release date would more likely be announced at PAX Prime because that takes place right around the 3 year anniversary of the game.
When is PAX Prime?
I’m sure Gamescom will have a big announcement it is a big convention again we don’t know everything happening at the event they could have stuff planned and not telling us.

Wait what? We should care that a bunch of gamers could win $5000 because it would change their lives? Where do these gamers live? Bangladesh?

If they need money that badly they should probably not be spending so much time playing video games.
Or spend said time playing a game that is actually an epsort like LoL or Dota.

Thats not the only thing wrong. The combat is too interactive, and not visually distinct enough for eSports in general. LoL works because Champions have huge levels of distinction in their designs and attack visuals. Those visual queues are the key to popular esport titles, yet very few developers understand this enough to do it right.
Overwatch has a huge amount of eSport potential because its easy on the Spectators. Frankly its the only game I’ve seen that combine MOBA mechanics with TF2’s practically essential visual principles.
But so many so many other games have fallen….. Global Agenda, Planetside 2, Path of Exile, countless arena FPS games. All because they couldn’t understand that you don’t “build” eSport games… just make a good competitive game and everything else grows up around it.

They can’t win big money that might change my life, so why should I care more?

edit “so why should I care more? or at all?”
=)

And what does that matter to us?
We’re not buying the game and paying for gems to support them. We’re doing it to get the game that we hopefully enjoy. Maybe if they stopped wasting time and money on this delusion of theirs, they could put more company focus on improving the actual game.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

So true, never even heard of it, and 5k ? lol
I think it’ll be more like October/November/December because not all specialisations have been revealed, let alone the challenging group content, let alone the new legendaries.

This is an MMO, not a MOBA. More than half of the people don’t even pvp, and out of all the people who does pvp, only few do at a very very high competitive level.
We have three year anniversary next month, then Halloween in October and another toy X-mas in December. So basically all events to the end of the year.
Possibly in September they could start with the guild halls, but doubtful on that.
At this rate we might see release on early 2016 or summer 2016. I really doubt they will put all these other celebrations on hold just for the release. Would I like to see it released this year, heck yes. But not going to happen.

Why does it have to be one or the other?
I agree they’re unlikely to release the expansion during one of the festivals, but I can’t see any reason they couldn’t keep doing announcements of what will be included while festivals are running, and potentially release the expansion in between. (November for example.)

What I meant was that if more people cared and were willing to crowd fund some money for the tournaments it could be way more than 5k$.
How would this go down with you guys??

You don’t understand the purpose of crowdfunding then. If the only problem is prize money, they could implement a pot just as easily rather then expect spectators (why not sponsors again?) to help up the prize money?
How would a pot work?
When is PAX Prime?
PAX Prime starts August 28th.
How would a pot work?
Pots work by using entry fee money (some, or all, and usually in combination with sponsor offered prizes) being put towards the prize packages. The more entrants, the larger the potential prize pool values, and presumably more competition at the event.
This alleviates some of the cost burden for the hosts, but usually acts as a barrier for entrants (for better or worse).
Anet didnt even book their own space, WTS Final is at the ESL Showroom and employees hang around at the twitch booth.
If you use the search function at the gamescon website and search for guild wars 2, Arena Net or World Tournament Series, you get 0 hits.

As I can see it, they probably won’t give us a release date less than a month away from the game release. If they manage to reveal one specialization per week for the next 5 weeks—Hey, anything’s possible—and announce the date on August 8th, that would allow for a release on Tuesday, September 8th (Tuesday being the day of the week that they normally release new content).
It’s optimistic, but I think it makes sense.
I could get behind that.
Edit: I fixed a couple of instances where I wrote “data” instead of date (which I almost did again). Working in Information Management as fried my brain…
Mains — Mathias of the Wood [Ranger]; Collaborator Bluatt [Engineer]
Alts — Necromancer, Warrior, Elementalist

I wouldn’t give a rats behind … why would I put my money, which I work for, into a pool for someone to win a video game? That’s nonsense. I mean, if someone doesn’t value their money enough to give it to some random gamer who wins a game tournament, why choose a MMO in the first place?
More of you should care more tbh, so a few decent lads could win big money that could change their lives
I see little reason to care about PvP tournaments in a game where the pvp balance doesn’t ever really change.
One common theme about almost every highly successful ESports game is that the balance is always changing, whether that be from balance patches changing skill values every week to new playable champions being introduced in to the game, or entirely new map modes being regularly added, the huge variety of composition and gameplay options is one of the most compelling aspects of most successful competitive esports.
Until ArenaNet can have that variety and flux in how PvP is played, I see no reason to bother watching pvp tournaments, because I won’t see anything in a tournament I don’t see everyone do daily anyway. The only difference at a tournament will be better coordination and less lag

Crowdfunding would be lucky to double that $5,000.
A majority of people aren’t even going to watch the tournament or follow it in any way. They certainly aren’t going to donate money to it.
The best Anet could do is sell special promotional game items to fund the purse the same way Dota2 does.
Not happening. They will announce it at Gamescom or Pax Prime, both start in August, and I believe October to be the release month based on the previous Pre-Purchase, Release Date announced, Actual Release.
Base game:
Pre-Purchase: April
(2 months)
Release Date Announced: June 28th
(2 months)
Release Date: August 28th
HoT:
Prepurchase: June
(2 months)
Release date announced: August
(2 months)
Release date: October
