1) what are the best ways to do this? I was thinking I could buy it online with my credit card and then give him the HoT key so he could download it.
Perfect. I did this myself. I just forwarded the email with the code to the friend I purchased this for as a gift.
2) anything that I don’t know about that could cause problems? I don’t want to spend the money and do something wrong so he couldn’t add HoT to his own current GW2 account…
Nope…just pay for it, and get him the code. As long as you do not activate it on your account, he will be bale to activate it on his.
3) I hear people say you can find authorized retailers that sell HoT for less than $49. Haven’t found any when I looked today. Would be great to get it for $35
I have heard the same thing, but never seen any myself.
Support can reassure you of the method to do this. Just open a ticket and tell them you want to give HoT as a gift, and list your friend’s account in the ticket. They will give you the details on how to do this. It can also help if you have an issue and can reference a ticket you already have open.

If ANet isn’t selling it from their site or a certified retailer (Best Buy, etc.)… don’t buy it… The “discount” sellers most likely got the code through illegal means

This is what I did for my husband’s / my alt account. I bought both of our xpacs via the website. The keys were emailed to me. I logged into my account here on the website (Services → MyAccount) and registered the key to the appropriate account.
Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

It’s been on sale since pre-purchasing began, usually in the range of 20-35% off. DLGamer has had it hovering around 20-25% off for the last few months, despite it always saying it’s about to end:

I can confirm that you just need to give the key to your friend without using it yourself (make sure they know to attach it to an existing account if they already have the core game). I have done this for a couple of people via PM on this forum and hovered frantically until they assured me they now had HoT.
