Revenant will be my first class to level fully through the NPE. My other characters I been leveling were created before the NPE so although they were not fun to level, it wasn’t as limited as what a new character would go though.

But my Revenant will be a new character and that means he has to do trait unlocks…

Man I would hate that, seeing how already frustrating the NPE is for characters made before the change.

I hope the NPE is scrapped in HoT.

Or just buy traits. I know its hurts but i dont think they remove it.

Hey folks,

Now that the HOT is out of the bag, we’re able to update this thread with more details. With the introduction of the new account based mastery system for end-game progression and growth in PvE, we’ll also be re-evaluating our other systems of character progression to ensure they match our over-all pillars and goals for Gw2.

In doing so: we’re going to be removing the current trait unlocking system currently on live and replacing it with a more simplified system that supports where skills-traits-specializations are going in the future. We’ll go into more details between now and the release of HOT on how skills, traits, and specializations will work in the new Gw2 world.

Thank you for all your passionate feedback on this topic – it not only helped our dev team lead to this decision, but has played a large role in helping us define how to build our exciting new account based mastery system for end-game progression in PvE as well.

They’re removing, or at least reworking the trait changes, which is the main thing people objected to.

Otherwise, it’s not nearly as bad as people let on. NPE is more the outrage du jour than an actual issue.

If this is your first class through, how do you know that it will bad? I wouldnt go on player feedback alone, there is a lot of people shouting it down with incorrect info just for the sake of being part of the negative train. There are legitimate criticisms and I share some, but my experience has not been the wholly unpleasant, soul destroyer i was read about.

My advice is, dont go into the NPE looking at it based on reputation.

Except as someone who’s leveled six characters through it, and eight more before it was implemented, it actually is just awful.

Not to mention over a dozen of RL friends who joined the game after the NPE/trait rework and quit on the basis that the progession felt too unrewarding, too slow, and simply didn’t give them the tools needed to fully experience and immerse themselves in what the game has to offer by being gated from content.

Glad to see they’re attempting to resolve the issue, though.

I played 5 classes through the new system, including the trait element which they’re reworking.

It made, for me, low levels interesting again, since there were better specific goals.

Taste is taste, but there was a definite moral panic about hte NPE stuff that we need to keep in mind.

I played the NPE while leveling up my characters who were forced to go through with it. I didn’t have to unlock traits, but I hated the system even without the trait unlocks.

So glad they getting rid of this.

I don’t really see anything bad about NPE as it was designed to “new” players mainly * 9 chars before NPE and 5 after NPE but i found it rewarding to actually finish your story on old chars for extra tomes etc considering future chars if one decides to skip few points in levelling process.

I leveled about 7 characters through the NPE now. It’s mind-numbing, yes, but not all that bad. You’ll get used to it.

Also, the trait thing happened 6 months before the NPE, I have no idea why people keep forgetting that.

New Player Experience ( if i recall correctly) Breaking the game learning process into steps by step kinda thing as in Unlocking skills & abilitys & game modes at certain levels to make it more easy to understand and providing some info about new content thats been unlocked. i may have missed a lot but that just a pointer to it.

You’re bashing something before even trying it. The NPE is actually pretty awesome. Before you’d level and you’d go “oh, yay I guess”. Now you get pretty neat rewards when you gain a level. It made me go “hoo boy, only a few more events and then I level!”, curious what I’d get this time. And you’re not restricted in anything. You can gather all you want, no need to wait. Yes, skills unlock at a certain level instead of opening them manually. I agree the latter was more interesting but it’s only a minor thing, you’d have your skills unlocked within an hour either way.

The only thing that I can totally agree with is annoying is not the NPE, but the trait change.

what’s so bad about it then?

The NPE is slows down progression (get your first trait point 10 levels later than before, traits unlocked individually now instead of by tier like how it used to be, etc.) in order to give new players more time to absorb and process what they’re unlocking, but for a number players it makes the lower levels even less rewarding than before, which in turn makes the leveling grind feel longer and less enjoyable.

Don’t forget the part where some levels literally only reward you with bags of crafting materials – no traits, no skill points, no attribute points. Nothing but a bag of mats. This leads to some people getting frustrated because they are fighting enemies that should be easier than they are (because you know, you’re the same level and all) but they end up being more difficult because you don’t actually have all those stat points making your character as strong as their actual level suggests. Then there’s my biggest complaint about it – level locking the main story. Leads to times when you are forced to go play random zones just to get to the level you need to do the story segment that is (would be) right in front of your character, treating everyone no matter how skilled like they need to be babysat and told “you can’t do that”. It also spreads tutorial elements across all 80 levels instead of explaining things to you when you do it – which seems to me like it would have made more sense.

Ideally, for something that’s supposed to make the experience better for new people, I honestly don’t think it does a very good job.

Some that bash it have tried it, and thats why they are (still) bashing it. Because it basically took away any joy in creating new alts.

I found the old way of unlocking the weapon skills to be better. You had to USE the weapon to unlock the skills instead of just getting them all unlocked at a certain level. Level rewards are the only kinda nice (mostly junk item though, for vets anyways) feature out of the NPE.
I tried a toon through the NPE and hated it with a passion. Sure levels were “faster”, but the whole thing was boring. I especially hated the changed they made to the starting zone. They got rid of all the interesting stuff and just made it press F. So glad I have all the instant lvl 20 scrolls and almost 200 tome of knowledge so I can just skip that junk when HoT comes out.
