All the waypoints are designed with running in mind. Mounts would add further clutter to a game that already struggles with the amount of game objects and performance. We even have to hide minis for open world fights (game auto hides them). If we got a 64 bit client and or the latest direct x maybe the performance hit of having mounts wouldn’t be so horrifying. Even a mastery for a specific zone is the only place I could see them, but that seems like a waste of time since a mount is usually just a faster version of running and speed is the only benefit, that is hardly unique to the game like a glider is for 3 dimensional movement.

I don’t get why so much hate from some people… how this could destroy your precious game play? Even if they add normal mounts, which I am not suggesting, cause I don’t really care about them, what could make it that terrible. Don’t get the mastery if you don’t like it! (if they do it anyways, this is just an idea).

Because “here’s more power/progression, but you don’t have to get it” has worked well as a game design principle exactly NEVER…

More cosmetic mounts would be cool.

Never give them a speed boost though. All that’ll happen is that the maps will end up getting more spread apart to compensate for it, and it’ll get worse for anyone not using one, while giving the people using them the hassle of mounting/dismounting to get somewhere in the same time.

One thing I would request though is the ability to use abilities that grant swiftness while mounted, like the ever popular mantra of healing with centaur runes. While I don’t support going faster because of using it, I also don’t like the idea that you end up moving more slowly while on them.

Well, I was thinking this concept not only as a way to move faster, in places that could need that functionality, but as a way to gain skills that you can use strategically to overcome obstacles, reach hidden places, detect traps maybe…

There could be different kind of creature that you could pick to ride and each one of them will give you a different kind of skill set. One could have more mobility so you can move between events faster, other could be tanky helping you survive more in abuses with invulnerability skills or heals, another one could jump higher and get you into otherwise unreachable places. So many possibilities, imagine it as in the guild missions that you transform into an animal and you run a “puzzle” detecting traps and having other special skills, such as leaps, heals, rushes etc.

Personal mounts, please no. Never.

Local vehicles that look like something apropiate for the place and replaces your skills with something fixed? Totally Ok.

Do you really will complain about something like the mechadevourers? I think those are great and fun.

The biggest problem I see with mounts is the fact WoW has incorporated them already for years, and it would feel too much like WoW if they did this. Its just not this games style. Something new, like rail cars on a specific track or zip lines might be a better option to consider. Nothing that would allow the character to move it or make an unknown destination.

There’s a lot of interesting ways to make traveling more fun. Zip lines sounds fun.

At 7, you can use underwater weapons while mounted, allowing you to fight while riding.

I’d prefer mounts specific weapons though. Like lances!
Now that I think about it, this could be very interesting. Possible specialisations? A new form of combat (along side underwater and land)? Wish I wasn’t so lazy, could probably have done a big wall of text. Would be fun in WvW, think of two waves of cavalry charging into it each.

Still, we have quite a lot mobility-options for all races,
charr-copter (flying) and steam-tanks (“rails” on land) in charr areas, especially ascalon.
sylvari-seeds (flying) – like in the grove – for slyvari outposts and caledon forrest.
Balloons (flying) and horses (land-routes) in kryta and around human outposts
Bears (land-routes) and giant eagles in norn areas, especially shiver peaks.
And while Asura already have the WP’s and portals, some flying cube-platforms for metrica and other asura outposts would be awesome.

Given that these things are redundant given the Asura WP already in game, I’d say they shouldn’t just work like WP but should show you riding in the Charr-Chopter and show the zone. Although in that case it’s basically a lot of effort for little more than a fancy ride :P

Mounts would be a great addition to the game, I don’t think the naysayers make very good points against it unless they mean flying mounts.

Yeah flying mounts are a no no.

What about being able to pilot boats or aircraft?

Boats and aircraft won’t fits well into the present mechanics, the maps are too small and the problem always with flying mounts is that it takes you out of combat and you never get to experience the map. Although as a different game mode or something it has potential.

What you ask for is mounts.

We already have that.

It’s not the way you want it, but that’s the way we got it.

Maybe in the future there will be something like what you ask in one way or another in some new region with another expansion, but for now we are already getting gliding.

Look every game has mounts and this is not just a WoW thing. I also believe that mounts doesn’t belong to that game and I wouldn’t like them to appear on the Gemstore… that would be lame. But many people like the idea of mounts and I have to admit that could be fun!
Adding them into the game as a Map mechanic could satisfy that audience and at the same time bring something new to work for without interfering with game’s aesthetics.

About speed this could increase for 10% if 25% seams to much. Maybe a map out there could be big enough that it will be usefull to be able to move faster to support on different events.

Every game does not have mounts. ANet has set several speed boosting aids into place which is one of the main arguments against mounts.

I understand you are talking about a mastery for just a map or two but there are other factors involved in not adding mounts as well.

Just take away the dumb progression system and just put in mounts. Perfect.

I haven’t heard about any complaints about Magic Carpet and Sonic Dredge tool. Players will tolerate mounts even if they said they wouldn’t.

Magic Carpet and Sonic Dredge tools are NOT mounts. No speed boosts. No skill changes. No combat ability. Not mounts.

Not many people actually use these things on a regular basis as they provide no speed boosts or abilities.

Mounts would be a great addition to the game, I don’t think the naysayers make very good points against it unless they mean flying mounts.

There are plenty of good arguments against mounts. You are either not reading any of the sensible arguments against them or are just putting on blinders because you want mounts.

1. Mounts would add to the amount of AI and Characters on any given map. Thus reducing the amount of players that could appear on any given map.

2. Many people already have FPS issues with the game and that could make it worse.

3. We have a waypoint system that allows quick transport to almost any area of any map. Even if a point is contested there are usually more than enough close by to access something just as easily.

4. There are speed boosts galore in this game. Including built in ones after combat.

5. There are skills and abilities that grant speed boosts and it is the decision of the player to utilize them or not. No one is forcing a player to use them but they are there if you want.

There are five good reasons, whether you like them or not, against mounts in the game.

No Mounts

Skill sfor mounts are impratical and will debalance whatever balance we have now
Speed for mounts is unwanted as it debalances whatever balance we have now

Having them sold on the TP would be P2W and therefore unwanted
Having them ingame would make them available for everybody, half performance on a lot of low end systems and clutyter screens

Having 50+ mount threads a year which are all spinoffs from the “I saw at <game> now I want it here as well”-mentality, and hopefully should make ppl realize eventually we play GW2 because they are not <game>….

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

So, bored of trolls that don’t even read what we say here… this is not a thread about mounts that you buy or gain and you own, NOT FOR TRADITIONAL MOUNTS, this is a topic about a mastery idea, a mechanic that you can use only on a specific area/map for very specific reasons, something like gliding or mushrooms. You won’t be able to use that anywhere else!

So, please just please stop commenting if you have no idea what we are talking about, you are not helping our discussion!!!

Having a mastery bound mount on specific maps to aid you explore the terrain is a very fun and interactive idea that opens up the potential of a different playstyle than the one that we are currently used to and making the progression of leveling much more fulfilling.
It will give the end-game another dimension of achievement and bragging rights. Furthermore the use of mounts in hard to travel areas or inaccessible areas will result in a healthy variety of goals and choice on how we spent our mastery points by not having a standard order in which we complete them.

My personal suggestions on the matter are :
Make mounts that are connected with your profession. Example : rangers mounting a dire-wolf , elementalists riding an elemental , engineers riding a motorbike , thieves riding a shadow pony , necromancers riding some undead mount etc..

Secondly have some standard skills while on the mount and some for the specific professions. They do not have to be battle skills but more like useful skills. Example : Dire-wolf has fear , the elemental has mist form/invulnerability ,the motorbike can leak oil to knockdown ,the shadow pony can have stealth/mass blind ,the undead one can have mass immobilize.
This will add some fun mechanics to help you go around in maps or personal instances that have hordes of enemies or ambushes or even a special kind of adventure like a race in the jungle tied to an achievement.

Just to be clear, my post was a joke.

With that said, the fact that spears are the most lance-like weapons in the game is what gave me the idea for that part. Tridents could fit the same role for spell casters. Harpoon guns from horseback, however, would be stupid.

I’m absolutely in favor of being able to ride any mob in this game. However, you shouldn’t be able to tell the mob where to go. You are mere guest and the mob decides where he wants to go.

Mounts aren’t necessary. In the slightest. This is way too similar to gliders. We don’t need three masteries all devoted to movement.
Besides, the base movement speed is fast enough, and you can add movement speed signets and swiftness on top of that, and THEN there are waypoints.
It’d also break the already existing flow of maps, along with balance of WvW. You could say to disable mounts in WvW, but I’d rather not have a gameplay mechanic disabled for one game mode, especially if I need extra effort to get access to it.
If you just want to look pretty, then those already exist on the trading post.

Having a few large critters in specific maps which could be mounted sounds pretty cool. I’d actually rather they not differ by classes/race, but instead have different characteristics needed to access different areas.

However, this is not the update to see it in. HoT maps will already have plenty of interesting aspects to them. Unless more maps get updated to have all these interesting features, it seems overkill to pile it all into the same map.

Awesome idea! But only if a mount costs 2000 gems, and when you are riding it you can’t get off if you are within 5000 units of an enemy, and you can’t jump, and when the mount suffers from damages (fall, enemy, etc) it will die and you’ll have to buy a new one, and you move 25% slower.

This way, the mounts fanbase will get their stupid thing, and won’t bother other players on the maps with their huge-and-useless stuff.

I’m pretty neutral on the question of traditional mounts. I see different pros and cons. I do actually really like the idea of rideable mobs scattered around the map though. But I also think crystal desert might be a better place for it, since mounts over large open areas seems to make more sense than in the untamed wilds. Plus I’d rather save them since we’re getting gliders and mushrooms and the like in this one.

An idea for the speed boost problem though: what if riding gave you a reasonable speed boost, but NOT on top of your other ones. What if it overrides them? That way, someone with no speed boosts already equipped will move faster (but not as fast as possible), and someone with max speed boosts might move slower. That would solve the “everyone will use them because they’ll make you faster and it’ll clutter everything” problem. They’d instead be used for a quick boost on slower characters, or to get past a specific obstacle on faster character. But they wouldn’t be optimal for map travel so they wouldn’t be overused.

For dismounting, maybe all mount mobs have a specific “home range.” If you get too close the the edge of that range, they do something to warn you. Either a popup (like the strong currents one) or something more immersive like slowing down or rearing up or something. If you go too far they toss you off and go home (maybe not literally, they could just vanish), and you’re automatically dismounted and lose the mount. That would keep them from being used out of the areas they’re intended for.

1. Mounts would add to the amount of AI and Characters on any given map. Thus reducing the amount of players that could appear on any given map.

No, that’s not how it works. Mounts are not their own entities, they are a “mod” for the player’s appearance with a % speed increase. They only have to be their own entity if you can dismount them and have them follow you, but that’s not what most people are asking for.

2. Many people already have FPS issues with the game and that could make it worse.

Might as well cancel the expansion and start removing content from the game if we’re going to let FPS dictate what gets into the game. And by the way I’ve seen FPS issues on an overclocked GeForce GTX 970 so the game’s gonna be pretty barren when nobody has FPS issues.

3. We have a waypoint system that allows quick transport to almost any area of any map. Even if a point is contested there are usually more than enough close by to access something just as easily.

Fast travel is only half the point. Waypoints don’t make your characters look cool like a good mount does.

4. There are speed boosts galore in this game. Including built in ones after combat.

See above.

5. There are skills and abilities that grant speed boosts and it is the decision of the player to utilize them or not. No one is forcing a player to use them but they are there if you want.

See #3. Also, lasts 5 seconds, increase run speed by 33%, 30 seconds cooldown.
