Q:
If I buy boxed version?
A:
There are two boxes. One is a pre-purchase edition while the other is a standard edition. They both have the same design, however the pre-purchase box has pre-purchase displayed under the logo.
The standard edition boxes are not supposed to be released until the 23rd. What’s in them exactly you can only guess, however even if it had a disc, it wouldn’t contain the full game. The pre-purchase box is an empty case with a code inside.
You can register your serial code through account management (https://account.arena.net/modals/add-code)
It’s just a code and you redeem it the same way you do the digital code.
OMG o__o Time to see if I can find a boxed copy near me
I make PvP & WvW videos
You can hope for a response, but the devs have been turning a blind eye to this question for months now.

That’s true for the “retail” version that most people bought after they first started the prepurchase process, which was well before even the release date was announced, but we have no confirmation on whether the newer retail versions or the ones coming out after release are the same.
So far they haven’t released a CD version and I think it’s unlikely they will because it would add a lot to the production cost (not for each one individually, but to make enough to distribute, even just in America, it would add up quickly) and there’s no real benefit to the players.
HoT is going to be basically a big patch. According to some people we’ve already got a lot of it in previous patches. So at most the disc would save some time on launch day for people with slow connections. But as soon as the first patch after launch is out (which is likely to be the same day) it becomes irrelevant because the disc can’t be updated so if you install HoT from it and then run the game it will have to download all the patches since the disc was made. Whereas if you download it directly from the site you can ‘jump’ straight to the latest version.

Even if a boxed version had a CD/DVD, it would contain a code/Serial Key, as well. I’m sure instructions would be included on how to redeem said code/Serial Key.
But, using the ‘My Account’ link and opening the ‘Game Content’ tab will always afford you ways to register or upgrade your account.
Good luck.
