The very second I saw the staff being confirmed as a melee variant for heart of thorns expansion, I immediately said, and I kid you not “HOW CAN YOU MAKE THE STAFF A MELEE WEAPON BUT KEEP THE SPEAR UNDERWATER?!”
So that is basically the jist of what I want to say, if the staff can be made for melee, then clearly you can make the spear as a land variant for say the fighter, because else are you going to give him, the dagger or pistol? Spear is so up his alley it’s the perfect fit.

If great sword can be ranged… Staff can be melee xD
Though I will admit, I would love to see the under water weapons get moved to be terrestrial. The current under water content is lacking, and A-net seems more intent of phasing it out rather then adding more.
Honestly think this will already happen. Theres a ton of assets in the game that just dont get used because underwater combat isnt that great….

from a pure technical viewpoint making a melee staff, is just the same as making it ranged, no more difficult, or difference there, making a spear a land weapon would be to essentially have to reconfigure it pretty much from the bottom to allow it to be placed in a slot used elsewhere, not even certain they have the capability in the engine to even allow a weapon to be both above and below water.
So yeah 2 VERY different things (we do already have ranged greatswords and soon hammers as well)

Actually..if…if..their code is clean and good as i hope it is…Maybe not of course! We dont have access to it! But it wouldnt surprise me if they could just change one or two lines of code(Who knows what would break because of it) And allow underwater weapons to be used on land. But, nobody knows! Nobody but Anet! Im hopeful it will happen in the future though
How can ace be one AND eleven?
LOL xD
In all seriousness though:
They could maybe make them amphibious too, we already have skills that are like that, wonder if that could carry over to weapons?

Exactly, yet it looks like Ranger will continue to be saddled with pets. >.<
I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Warrior get’s Spear.

The step from staff getting mainhand is not so difficult as spear going land.
There are two reasons for this:
1: Kamohoali’i Kotaki is the spear legendary. It is fully designed for a water theme, but more important, the animation are made for udnerwater. This would need a total rework to be a land legendary.
2: Many weaponsets don’t have spear, harpoongun, trident. This has to be rectified, meaning that they have to design new skins, which means more work.
I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Warrior get’s Spear.
No new weapons for this expansion. Wouldnt surprise me either that at somepoint Warriors, Guardians and maybe rangers got them.

You guys do know that it is impossible for the ranger to ever be pet-less right? It’s the ranger’s class mechanic. All kinds of weapons skills, traits (including minor traits) and utility, healing and elite skills interact with your pet or depend on having a pet. The most you will ever get from an elite spec is a somewhat changed pet mechanic. If you want to play a pet-less ranger you will have to play a different profession and hope that profession gains an elite spec which makes it sort-of ranger-like (as has now happened with the Guardian).
Personally I think it’s a matter of time before they go and look at underwater content. They will have to eventually, especially if they stand behind the statement they previously stated about the deep sea dragon. Probably a future expansion, and I hope they incorporate multiple dragons into a story line, otherwise it’ll just be the Pact taking on one dragon, then the next, and so on. Very linear, very boring. The guild wars universe is built upon the rich story, lore, history, I’m sure they could do better than a super linear story. I expect a game of thrones level storytelling from them, and so far, they’ve been pretty solid with that. Hopefully with a deep sea dragon some weapons will go from water to land and vice versa. Underwater is a mechanic very rarely well done; if they get it right, they’ll certainly make a name for themselves.

you guys ever heard of monks? they use staves for melee all the time, in the real world, the only use of a staff is for melee, since magic doesn;t exist lmfao it’s more common for a staff to be melee than to shoot fireballs out of it :/

What statement previously stated bout the deep sea dragon? I never heard them say anything that we fight her in the sea. Dragons can move!
I’ve done some fantasising bout her and this is how I see a strong story bout the DSD.
She (in my imagination) is a female dragon and the mother of all other elder dragons. When we kill her last and favourite son she gets enraged and hurtles to the mainland to kill the people responsable for killing her kids and all that helped him.
Is it going to go that way?? likely not. But also don’t asume we fight and kill her underwater. Personally I think they would love to try it, but also know it is difficult and they likely have a good backup plan ready.

This could be a difficulty, but there are plenty of pets that are usable on both land and underwater – the process should be pretty similar.

They just need to make the Harpoon skins work for rifles and the trident/spears work for staves. That’s pretty much it. Call it a day!
If we can put a man on the moon, we can make spears usable on land.
But seriously, the work involved in making a set of melee staff skills is entirely different from the work it would take to make spears into land weapons. This thread is kind of silly.

Eh not really. Alot of us loved the spear idea from GW1 id imagine and would like to use them again is all
Im hopeful it happens, in time of course.

I hope it happens someday myself. But making land-spears has very little in common with the ability to make a set of melee staff skills. You’re either converting an underwater weapon to have land-equivalents, which is going to be a lot of work, or you’re creating an entirely new weapon class. This is a silly thread because people are talking about making land-spears in comparison to making melee staff. Sayings about apples and oranges and the comparisons thereof come to mind.

If staff can be mele, greatsword can be used underwater.
If Warrior and Guardian can both use greatsword, then why can’t Warrior use wall of reflect?
Why does anet not follow these very logical trends?
I want to be able to use the torch underwater.
I actually was thinking about this since Specialization does provide Anet a very good opportunity to provide Specializations that would allow our characters to use Aquatic weapons on Land.
This would provide some unique mechanics and more Specialization options.
It would also give Anet the chance to reintroduce Paragon as a Spear Specialization giving Guardians the ability to use Spear for land combat with a new set of weapon skills for Spears when used on land. Also, adding in more Paragon Shout Support/buffs.

Except pets and weapons have absolutely NOTHING in common, cant exactly copy code from amphibious pets over to water weapons, and make some minor adjustments and its done…, would be the easier way probably to make the code from scratch for the weapons int aht case, and then we back to the start.
And as someone else mentioned the general animations for underwater weapons are built around a water theme (something with fish swimming around some of them if i remember correct) how would those look on land? xD

If rifle can shoot, spear gun can work on land.
I like this forum game.
Legendary Spear would sure be interesting with a Land Shark animation.
probably be easier to add another pole arm weapon than to make spear land, suggestions Halberds, Naginata,

If a charr of the Flame legion can swim, then bows should shoot fire piranhas. It’s very scientific, indeed.
It’s tragicomic how little understanding some people seems to have about how coding and designing a game works. Do you really think that “work out of the sea now” is a valid programming command?
But what do I know? Maybe Anet games do work by witchery .
How about
If wishes where horses,
beggars would ride?
Spear for land would good. Underwater weapons (skins) have almost no use and seem like wasted work. Making them avaiable on land for some classes as weapons could fix that.

as you are posting here, it is safe to assume that you have played GW2. So how have you missed how weapons work in this game? They are placeholders for abilities rather than equipment. Yes, a spear can be a land weapon, but it is not like other games where you can create a new skin/mesh and say “does x dice damage”. You have to create a skillset for the weapon. Yes, this can be done. But it is not very satisfying to just copy another weapon skillset, it should be unique, be in balance with other weapons and last but not last useful.

Elite specs add new weapons to professions and need new weapon skills and animations. There is nothing that stops anet from adding a water weapon as land weapon.
if spears can shoot land,
Then, staves can underwater work. o.0

Time. Making a complete set of skills take time. Making a complete set of skills for multiple classes takes even more time. Making new, not acuathic looking spears takes more time too.
Unless you think they should put spears INSTEAD of some of the new spec weapons. In that case, true: they can use a bunch of acuathic themed spear skins instead of land weapons for some unfortunate class. (NOT MY CLASSES PLEASE!)
All I can tell you, OP, is be patient. Maybe Tengu will show us how to jab people with pointy sitcks without an ocean to accompany us when they leave their mighty citadel. Maybe Largos will come onto land with the underwater spears and be like, “Do you guys really have no idea how to use these on land?”

Maybe they save the spear for a rainy day. Remember GW2 is going to be a marathon not a sprint.
If Charr was an antagonist in GW1 and now can be playable, Mursaat can be playable too.
If we can fight underwater, we can fight while flying too.
Come on guys, lets keep playing this game.
If Kasmeer can portal to unseen locations, we can go to Realm of Torment.
If Kasmeer and Marjory are a gay couple, Logan and Rytlock can be too. Wait…
Spear will be land-based eventually. Sooner or later, ANet will run out of weapons to give the new Elite Specializations that make any sort of sense, and they’ll have to add more weapons to the game.
I can see what will happen if they don’t…
“The new elementalist specialization will get pistol mainhand… The 1 skill in Water Attunement will be ‘Squirt’.”
“The 1 skill in Water Attunement will be ‘Squirt’.”
Then GW2 would be banned from UK HAHAHA

I think there should be at least these few new weapons that can reuse skins.
As they’ll reuse resources, they’ll be a bit easier to make.
Of couese there could also be new weapons, like a whip, crossbows and 1h crossbows…

Actually your idea isn’t bad at all. Think about it for a sec it would be easy for Anet to implement after all they have managed to put so much water in HOT that we can now fight and walk on it no swimming required and people are still gonna buy into it.
Since Anet doen’t seem interested in water content anymore we might as well use our harpoon gun and trident as well, it would make as much sense using those out of water as it is creating a Jungle without lakes and rivers. You know this is actually my first game where frogs don’t even know how to swim.
If great sword can be ranged… Staff can be melee xD
Though I will admit, I would love to see the under water weapons get moved to be terrestrial. The current under water content is lacking, and A-net seems more intent of phasing it out rather then adding more.
I feel the same way and once Anet fixes the underwater content, who’s gonna teach the HOT frogs how to swim?
If Guardian can be Ranger without pet, Ranger can be Ranger without pet too.
Simple stow away your pet, there you go. You see Anet does think about everything, but it doesn’t mean they’ll follow through.

- Diving knife. 2h underwater weapon. Shares skins with daggers.
How big is the knife supposed to be if it’s 2 handed……
what if they just changed the name from ‘spear’ to ‘harpoon’ and then make an entire new weapon: the spear, for terrestial combat?
they would not have to fix anymations for the underwater weapon, they would only have to make an entirely new weapon class.
ofcourse then you have the problem that you have to design skills and traits for multiple professions and since all professions only get one new weapon….
(just an idea for in the future maybe?)
