Immersion Shattered
I am a big supporter of GW2 and ANet. I bought the expansion and would do so again, and I talk up GW2 and ANet to all my gamer friends. It is important that you understand this comes from a place of constructive criticism.
Today I fought the Legendary Wyvern Patriarch. It was an epic battle worthy of the title legendary, as a ragtag group of adventurers hacked and parried and dodged, narrowly escaped the maw of death many times, heroically braved the flames to resurrect each other, danced through the sky with bombs and fire, and at the last moment.
At the last moment?
At the last moment the fight was abruptly over, because sunrise happened. Event failed.
.
This is such horrible design for so many reasons. I will list some.
1. It makes no in-game sense whatsoever. Wyverns are not vampires, they are not eradicated by sunlight. Even if they were, such eradiction should grant event success, not failure.
2. It very strongly discourages playing the game. Why would I participate in any event if I can’t be sure it won’t abruptly fail me? Why would I play the game at all?
3. Combined with the above, it very strongly discourages exploration and random interaction with other players. This is how relationships are formed, and it is only relationships that keep a game going. Not content, not storylines. People. The fight itself is really clever and clearly took a very long time to build, and one simple decision has completely ruined it. Again, I am a big ANet supporter, so I am willing to believe this is accidental rather than intentional. There are at least three obvious fixes. Remove the time limit component, or grant success on time limit, or make the fight have an explicit time limit.
I personally am not going to stop playing because of this, but I’m going to spend way less time exploring the new content you made. I just don’t have enough time in the day to get jerked around.
They added timers to give a sense of urgency. Also so bosses would be on a timer, so you.know when to turn up for it. Or you could, if you where unlucky, miss a boss fight for weeks, as it got killed, but you don’t know when, so you don’t know how long till respawn. So your choice then is to sit around waiting for.it, or go off and come back with the possibility of missing it again.
Look at it this way, it’s a nocturnal animal. There for, it will be at a big disadvantage in the day time, so instinct and self preservation will kick in, and it will run off to safety.

Immersion restored!
well this discussion got cleared up very quickly.
>They added timers to give a sense of urgency.
There is no timer on the wyvern event. That is a major part of my concern. There is a timer on daybreak, but there is no indication that the wyvern event will end at daybreak.

Utogi tells us that wyverns hunt by day. No other wyvern in the game vanishes in this way. Also it doesn’t flee, it just vanishes. If it DOES flee, then surely that should count as it being defeated, and the event should succeed. What battle has anyone ever been in where the one who runs away is crowned the victor?

All of the Night time Legendary bosses end at Daybreak…every…single…one…of…them. Yes, even some of the daytime Legendary wyverns will disappear if you do not kill them before Nightfall starts…I have witnessed it with my very own eyes(the one at the Jaka Itzel being the specific one I’m taking about). There are other Champions that do the same thing, they spawn and are either killed or disappear when one of the day/night cycles starts, if they don’t just disappear on their own because their event ends without any resolution.
As for the failure part, even though the Event fails, you still get half a reward in Exp and gold(no karma), so you do get something, but not what you would get if you were victorious. Does this make more sense now?

All other issues aside, he does have a point about the boss vanishing. That seems a tad lazy design. Teq doesn’t just vanish if you fail to kill him. He knocks over the mega cannon and flies off. The wyvern already has an animation where it flies up (before it does its strafing run) so why not reuse that animation when he flees. Just saying.
your fighting vampires, that’s the only viable explanation as to why a creature would leave as your fighting it and the sun came up. it’s as ridiculous as my post here lolol glad I got my refund.
