They wanted to do that with Tengu, they even wanted to make a Canthan district in Divinity’s reach, all the Asian themes were there ready to go.
Then NCsoft pulled the plug saying they didn’t like it for presumably cultural reasons at the time. The possibility of a future expansion into Cantha, and the re-release of Tengu content is a possibility, they said that much, but the most Chinese GW2 is ever gonna get is the new year events so far.

From what I can see, many changes (such as mega server, NPE) are revenue risks due to mega server being hardship to some player community, NPE dismantling immersion.
Community and immersion were original GW2 visions. I believe those great visions should be kept up, rather than eroded.
One suggestion: Instead of mega server, NPE, GW2 may do better to develop a new race or 3 that will meet Chinese folklore themes. Such as 1) Chinese mythology, 2) middle age Chinese history, 3) Chinese martial arts and/or swordsman fantasy figures. New professions can be more kungfu/Chinese swordsman based.
Make those beautiful swordsmen. Lean and mean kungfu boxers, even (Japanese) ninja/assassin. No WoW kungfu panda. :P Oh ok cute panda race if you want. :P WoW panda toons look dumb though to me. Your mileage may vary!

Honestly, there isn’t any need for this. If they really wanted to cater to the Chinese audience so hard, they could just give us Cantha in a future expansion. Or, you know, send Canthan ambassadors with new oriental ARMORS (NOT OUTFITS) and weapon types because the main obstacle preventing trade between Tyria and Cantha was Zhaitan, and we kind of eliminated that roadblock. One would expect a delay in communication, but if it goes on for too long, this could get downright immersion breaking.
Cantha
Revenant 1h sword
mists powers
Blindfold
the only thing is missing is cantha.

-Guild Wars 2
Then NCsoft pulled the plug saying they didn’t like it for complelely prejudiced reasons.
Fixed that for you. Unfortunately ‘polling’ shows that there is a common (petty) opinion among the Asian public that mixing of korean/chinese/japanese/the other 30 some-odd countries in Asia no one knows about, is offensive, because they are’unique’ cultures, in spite of the fact that Asians and everyone else (including us!) do exactly that with western and European culture in fantasy and fiction.
Here for example, is an interview where a developer admits that they removed the completely finished Cantha district from Divinity’s Reach because of the above-mentioned polling. There is another interview where they state the human opening storylines were replaced from canthan/elonan/krytan to poor/middle class/noble for the exact same reason.
I mean, does Kryta look like any one particular medieval European country to anyone? No, it draws inspiration from dozens, does that offend anyone of European descent, anywhere? No, it does not, in fact the very idea that anyone would be offended by that sounds ludicrous to most of us.

in my opinion mixing cultures and astetics creates the most epic and cool things in a video game and sometimes even irl.

Oh yeah, very true. Doh! Got too excited. I’ll be even more excited if Cantha came out as an expansion.
Very interesting to read everyone’s comments so far. I’m going to watch the video you linked, Conncept. TY.
There is a lot of Korean devoloped games with martial arts and culutural references catered to Chinese public. If they wished to play something like that thay can easily do.
While Cantha is cool I do not see reason for it to be implanted anytime soon. Elder Dragons Plague Tyria at the moment all but Sea Dragon which we don’t know exact location or name are in Tyria.

that was the barrier preventing tyria from communicating with cantha but from the sounds of it cantha is a xenophobe nation now and doesnt want to communicate with anywhere else.
tyria has other interests at the moment (mordremoth) and they could also probably explain lack of attempts to communicate with cantha via the deep sea dragon.
