Inventor? Meh...
Mechanic?
I think the tinkerer suggestion sounds cool for you engis :P
That engineering disciplines thing is really nice idea too but it wouldn’t work because the base proffessions aren’t seen as precursors but a specialisation itself (you lose something for everything you gain when choosing a specialisation).

Whatever they call it, it won’t be Inventor.

Tinkerer? Yikes. Might as well call them diddle rs. I’d rather be an inventor at least you could invent something threatening. You are right about the discipline thing I think. The druid isn’t really a ranger at all… that was my best idea though so shucks.
inventor is too boring. it needs to be something that embraces the close quarters steampunk madness while still sounding like something you’d find on a guild wars profession roster.
sadly, i have no idea what that could be.
I find demolitionist a pretty cool name. it implies massive destruction while being related to engineers.

I heard people predict both the Reverent and Druid for names of new classes…

That would be pretty cool, especially if the spec is really geared toward destruction with that hammer. And people would shorten it to “demo” which rolls off the tongue pretty well.
a Saboteur? I can’t really come up with a cool name, but I certainly hope they did!

And I’ve heard many many names too. That’s no a consensus. People wanted Druid because it was a thing in GW1, but would they have expected it as a spec on Ranger? Could people have actually named the Revenant for the class we got, or would they have put it on the Necro spec?
Having thrown out a series of names isn’t really relevant. Inventor is a terrible name and ANet will ultimately do something else, because they always do.

If you were a profession your name would be Buzz Kill. Your mechanic would be removing all of the belchers bluffs, bobble head labs and box’s of fun off the maps. Your elite would be boring the opposite sex to sleep.

What in the world are you talking about dude? Did I steal your thunder somehow by saying that your fears are unfounded because the thing you don’t want to happen won’t come to pass? Get a grip.

What thunder? We are just trying to have a fun light hearted discussion about arbitrary things and you’re bringing nothing to the table.

This is my favorite so far I think. Sounds cool

Ah! Arch-enemy of the Antagonizer!
Oh man that takes me back haha.
Demolitionist
Machinist (is that even a word?)
Forgeman/Forgemaster
all those sound good to me

And also the hammer skills said engi was using in the trailer were awfully ‘fiery’

Machinist is a word! Also a mighty fine trade to be in. I’ve been trying to come up with a robotics specialist word but havent got anything yet. Machinist kinda works (eeven though real Machinist have very little to do with robotic design other than making precision parts)
Also what about demolisioneer? make up a new “neer” type name for any specialization. Lol

Inventor would be just a fitting Specilization, if it would be sure, that the Engineer Specialization that we will receive first will be based on the Inventions Trait Line.
Inventor would be same as much a good fitting name, as like for examle Alchemist would be fitting simply, if we would get an engineer specialization, thats specialized on Alchemy….
That people always need to have “cool” names … Seriously, first tell us what defines for you a “cool” name, because “cool” is just different for everybody and just totally a matter of personal taste.
What A finds so very cool, must long not be cool at all for B and vice versa
Class Names just have to be fitting to the Design of the Class, the Them and Style and must give the Class the feeling, that the name well rounds up the overall gameplay of the Clas, so that the end result comes over as trustworthy as possible, becaue if a Class Design isn’t trustworthy with a fitting name, then the result easily can become just immersion breaking for many people.
Thats also the reason, why that “Revenant” may have gotten for sure so much backlash for its unfitting name.
In regard of the topic, Names that would fit to what we have seen from the Trailer, my personal guess that I would accept as fitting names are:
- Inventor
- Technician
- Machinist (but i doubt it that it will be this, cause FF14 has been announced to get a class with that name with their first expansion Heavensward)
- Mechanist
- Pioneer
- Vandal (much better, than Demolitionist)
- Saboteur (but I rather would, like to see that for a Thief Specialization one day, but it would kind of fit to the Engineer too)
That are the only strong an meaningful names, that I can think of and would accept as specialization names for the Engineer
My personal bet is, it will be something of those 3:
- Saboteur
- Pioneer
- Mechanist

I do like saboteur but I think your right, kinda sounds like it would fit another profession better. I don’t quite understand pioneer but it doesn’t sound bad. I like mechanist a lot, exactly like a robotics specialist, not as smooth sounding as Machinist to me but a better fit. Very nice.

You’re Welcome.
Inventor sounds fine to me. But then I don’t really care what its called, they could call it “Stinky Pile of Poo” and I wouldn’t care. I just want the new weapon / skills, the name is irrelevant.
Artificer.

I Kinda like Sapper for a torch warrior (for lack of better ideas). Gunpowder and torch = burst and cc maybe? It totally works for engineer as well, perhaps more so. Its kinda an old Warcraft thing tho so i don’t know how i feel about it (was it ever in WOW? I don’t know i tried playing that game a long time ago for about 20 minutes then fell asleep)

ah yeah. Totally slipped my mind. strange, as I use that crafting profession allot.

I predicted the Revenant class pretty well. Check out my history. I even had the upkeep energy thing down with the many forms.
Artificer.

Of the ones I’ve seen suggested, I’d agree.
Other than the hammer the only thing we know about them is the little clockwork helicopter drones which are, from a technological perspective, more delicate and intricate than anything engineers have. Artificer speaks to that delicacy and intricacy.
Edit – oh yes already a crafting profession. Mmm.
Alchemist could be a name for an Engineer specialisation, though it probably won’t be that looking at the flying helicopters and the wielding of the hammer.
The name of the specialisation is not likely to be one we mere players can think of, knowing ArenaNet’s reputation of surprising us with new concepts of design

Demolitionist describes very well the hammer aspect of what we have seen on the trailer, but IMO doesn’t fit very good with the copter thingies. In the same way, Inventor goes well with the drones, but sounds extremely inadequate for a rocket wielding close combat beast…
Some ideas (English is not my first languaje, so they could sound funny instead of cool… not that that is a bad thing, either…) in the steampunk vibe:
Clocksmith
Watchsmith
Mad Scientist
Operator
SteamMaster
Clockzerker!

that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”
Hawks
Probably something that has to do with the Maguuma. I’m thinking Maguum→Pact Airships→Flying Turrets
Thus, maybe Scavenger or Rocketeer or, my favorite, the Aviator.
What about a Roboticist.
I think we got some good ideas…. now the only thing left to do is let my gambling addition take over and wager some gold. Maybe a raffle that goes to the winner? 1 gold for an entry? Multiple entries with the same name split?
I don’t think we will see anything like machinist or inventor. These names would be borderline redundant. It would be similar to a ranger being a hunter or elementalist as a mage. While not the exact same thing, they are too similar.
I would place money on demolistionist. Engineers construct. Demolistionists deconstruct. There’s a yin and yang element to that. Throw a hammer into the mix and it seems even more likely.
Terminator.
…I’m sorry.
i look at the trailer… at the iron masked engineer bashing mordrem in the face and the only name i see for it is besieger…

I am personally rooting for Forgemaster or Demolitionist. Powerful-sounding names that are verbally more complex and aggressive than the base class. Yes please!
Clocksmith
I like it.
Tinkerer
Deffinitly fits specialization for engineer. It’s like synonym to Engineer proffesion, and specialization is like synonim to base class. Same, yet different.
Inventor actually sounds good.
Why do people keep on saying you give something to earn something back from specialization? Wasn’t it stated on PAX reveal that specializations will upgrade only our classes, and then every next specialization will be the said choice between, but first one will be only upgrade and done.

I’m not sure why people seem so fixated in synonyms . Druids are not the same as rangers. Chronomancers (if that clock spell is any indication) are not the same as mesmers. Arenanet seems to be thinking outside the box, which I like.
Tenacious D have already created the perfect name for the new specialization: Master Exploder
http://wpwhendead.tumblr.com - a GW2 webcomic about a Charr and a Skritt
I have a question about engineer “end game” that coincides with this topic. I am currently leveling an engineer (around level 60 now). Fully geared at 80 do we have any builds that have a ton of burst damage that are comparable to other professions? We seem to fill the support role from what I can tell. A demolistionist seems like it would give us the option to have burst damage.
I won’t lie, I am hoping for demolistionist just to have the ability “wrecking ball”. Arena net could come up with some cool animations for that.
Inventor actually sounds good.

No, because if it was pure upgrade, then the specialization would be objectively better than the base class, which would replace it, whereas if choosing the specialization causes you to lose access to something available in the base profession, they are on more even ground.
I’d have kind of liked “Sapper” or “Pioneer” but then that’s mostly because my engy is Charr and those are names for combat engineers.
