I was under the impression that if I had done the HoT story up to a certain point with one character, I can continue on from that point with another character. Is that not the case?

Yes, and no.

Each complete story is soulbound however you could, if you wanted to, do sections of the story with individual chars. However you wouldn’t have a complete story line arc at the end but multiple incomplete ones.

No, each character has “it’s own story”. Back in the day, a lot of quests were unique not just to the character but also to the race you chose. Now it’s a semi-achievement system. For ex, you achieve finishing the whole story with 1 character and it appears as done, but when u get on a new character you have to go through the story again, even tho your account appears to have finished it.

….those days of relative in-depth character story are gone, but the system is still there.

The ACHIEVMENTS are account bound
The STORY is character bound
