I spend most of my time trying to figure out how to get somewhere than actually having fun.

75% of the time the path is blocked by a mastery I don’t have yet.

I’ve already spent several hours doing events and I am only level 2. Anyone feel this is way too slow?

Bored and confused. No tutorial to tell you what map icons are. Spending hours of pining looking for a way to get to locations when you realize you need to grind more because you don’t have the mastery to get there.

Playing skyrim right now. I got bored of the expac in like 2hrs. Bored and frustrated. Regret.

THIS! I HATE THE PVE the more I slug through it trying to unlock elite specs for wvw…. I hate falling off and ending up some random place. Please create a pvp reward track for the specs so I can at least enjoy playing while unlocking the specs instead of agonizing through map completion crapola that has never even slightly appealed to me.

You guys are the reason they dumbed down the new player experience. There is a scout right at the start. Mousing over icons tell you what they are. The Masteries have a nice little tutorial, the characters in the story even explain stuff to you. I mean, I feel like you guys aren’t even trying. ; P

Funny you should ask. Yes. Yes I am. Severely bored. Its weird too that having a specialization from the start would have actually taken my mind off of the slow start. After about 4 hours of play i feel like i have done nothing in game. In fact I havent….due to design.

Btw I read all the comments at work (since HoT launch) of people complaining about the gated grind content and thought they were entitled whiners. I was wrong. For boredom reasons alone, give people specializations.

there are bits where it ramps back up for me, then a severe low as I grind through it all just to go back a map or two to just grab hero points. if things weren’t gated, (or if we could grind it elsewhere then just the jungle) I don’t think it would be to bad.

on that thought, elite specs, why on earth didn’t they just make elite specs a mastery (aren’t we mastering our classes?) then we could dump xp into it whenever we felt like and just level it naturally from there instead of using gated content.

There’s only 1 person here who complained about it being confusing.

The pacing is way too slow for me. It takes hours just to get 1 mastery doing the same events over and over again.

It is a hassle to get anywhere, and you have to spend quite a bit of time just to figure out if it requires a mastery you don’t have yet.

this, I don’t know how many times a mastery has been labled as “below” so I go gliding down looking for it just to discover an updraft and no way back up so I have to suicide and wp way way back only to return later to make sure I didn’t miss anything else.

A scout would be a bit much, but if they color coated the “gated” masteries vs the easily accessed ones I wouldn’t mind that a bit.

I am not bored. Tired, yes, I’ve had a long run of concentrated game play and feel a bit stymied in my progression thanks to trying to mix Halloween and mastery progression. I didn’t get further on the bat effect shoulders than one Bat Wing, which is as far as anyone has gotten as it turns out. So now I’m wondering how much I wasted my gold and materials (plus I did a Mystic Chest since every time I asked in chat what was in one people linked a ton of neat things. Turns out they were linking their ToT results and ignoring me. The chest gave me trophies worth 3 gold and a component to make a city portal scroll. I just waypoint to cities, so no way was this worth 3 stacks of cured thick leather). I’ve not gotten into Ascent yet, have done one hour of the Maze, and am about out of candy corn thanks to helping Drooburt but still have a number of achieves to go … that I already accomplished in previous years.

So Halloween’s making me feel a bit meh and wishing I’d just stayed in the jungle to advance masteries.

Meanwhile I was hearing my guildies having soooo much fun exploring. And there, you see, there’s the non-boring part. You don’t have to do the same events over and over, just push on to new maps, unlock new things. The laughter and exclamations over Mumble were marvelous (I did join them for a bit of it, thanks to having some Teleport to Friend items). Everywhere we went there were new events and new mechanics, and between those we were scoping out Hero Challenges. Not all are mastery gated (though that giant Chak one? Don’t try to solo that until you know the fight and your build. It’s for a good hunk of people to do at once).

I don’t think HoT is going to bore me for a very long time, if ever. There’s so much to explore.

I wouldn’t say bored, but I definitely don’t want to go back to Maguuma anytime soon. After finishing my chronomancer unlocking, the forced skill point grind completely burned me out on the new areas.

19 skill points, and only 1 of them was in any way interesting, and I suspect that that was because I had a position where you were supposed to use a mastery to effortlessly beat it, but I could technically do it without due to the shorter commune times and mesmer invulnerability chaining.

Exploring was actually pretty awesome in the beta events where the game wasn’t locking class mechanics behind skill points.

I am trying to get my updraft mastery but I am already getting really bored.

I’m already seeing the same 3-4 events being cycled on Verdant Brink over and over again.

There aren’t very many players in Auric Basin, and I cannot figure out how to get to the next trigger for my living story. Maybe I am missing another mastery again?

The events in Auric Basin aren’t that different from Verdant Brink. It is just a re-skinned escort, kill, defend or harvest event.

Not really bored, just frustrated to the point of not wanting to play.

It is EXTREMELY annoying to spend 10 minutes trying to find the route to the top of a mountain in HoT, and then find out that the vista/POI/hero point is inaccessible because I’m missing a mastery.

And its not like this happened once/twice. It’s happening all the god kitten time

Map difficulty and complexity is simply unsustainable in the xpac over the long run. No one with right mind will keep rallying pact control points or grind hero points on all 9 classes the way this game stands today. Other than grinding xp for mastery/leveling, the zones actually have no purpose.

1. Maps are very complex and not noob friendly – It may sound appealing on paper but, in reality it hurts big time. SW and Dry top worked because they are noob friendly – simple tasks, simple routine with some twists for some things extra have more mass appeal in game than extremely hard, “anti-casual” content.

2. Map is not solo friendly except for zerging. Soloing has no place in the map at all. Hero points are not soloable in most cases. So, why call them hero point? Call them something else to signify a team effort… Heroes’ Challenge?

3. Map is not even team friendly as almost every single thing requires varying degree of complexity (gliding, bouncing etc.). Teleport to friend and xp scrolls seem to be the driving factor here.

So, the question that must be answered here – what exactly is the hook to have people go thru this extreme level of zerging every day for decent forseeable future? I just don’t understand that after playing 2 maps. Its kinda funny when you see how people are going nuts trying to get to lvl 2 of mastery point.

Honestly, if you gotta copy Blizz (paragon farm) or NCSoft’s Korean Grinders then do it right. If your goal is to create psudo level, pseudo gated content then break up each mastery into multiple layers so that ppl hear multiple dings a day and feel great while progressing exactly the same kittenty amount they’d do today.

You are trying to be honest. Hence you are exposing the grind that creating mass discontent. If you truly want to be different, get the kitten away from making grindy kitten or accept the fact that MMOs need grind, whether its levels or gears, and join the long gray line of every other MMO maker.

End of the day, credit must be given where credit’s due. Art direction. The entire landscape is a piece of art. Love the details on the stairways, branches. Simply unbelievable attention to details. What talent! Many thanks.

Gameplay, on the other hand, ….

Getting real tired of this false dichotomy. There is a middle ground between effortless and punishing.
There’s a middle ground between “giant grind that makes you not want to bother with the expac you spent $50-100 on and anticipated for months” and “so quick and forgettable you’re gonna run out of things to do after a few days.”

This expansion killed this game dead with no hope of rally or res for me. What once was what I thought to be the best MMO I’ve ever played is now just an endless series of frustrations as I can’t even get around the world to accomplish basic goals. One POI in VB (in the upper level of the canopy) I spent 3 to 4 hours over 2 nights trying to get. That was it for me.

The devs. did a horrible job in the design of this map. It looks cool, and the events are cool too. Yet they took exploration and turned it into a arduous chore of epic proportion. If a game isn’t fun, then I see no need to log in. GW2, you were a great game… WERE!

Idk, maybe we are just different people but I think the HOT maps are really well made and look amazing.

If your trying to get a point on the map but can never reach it, just ask for help. I got on my Guilds team speak and just did it with friends. If you have no friends or if no one else is around to help you find a POI (Even though most of the time they are) just look it up on Google or youtube. The story missions you do while you are out there explain which masteries to go for next to continue the story which also translates to unlocking more of the map.

Almost everything you do in this game gives you experience. So I just play it regularly and the xp just comes in. Some of the achievements you can do, reward you with mastery points as well. Once you have the mastery unlocked, you never have to do it again. Its just a one time thing for your account.

I don’t have much of a problem repeating some of the larger scale events. You can make pretty good money from it and it fills up the gap of a few hours. The events aren’t faceroll either you actually have to play to succeed. The mastery system is better then rep grinding in other mmos, and actually grants useful abilities. Your not just fighting mobs, your also fighting the map.

Unlocked all my 10 chars elite specs in the first few weeks, just complete Verdant Brink and a few more points in Auric Basin and nothing more to do. Played the new maps a bit, but as i´m not really into pve anymore it becomes extremely tedious and boring quite fast.

And as anet´s not done anything significant yet in wvw it becomes even less of an incentive to even log in and do dailies/crafting etc.

I don’t get how you can only be 2 if you have grinded. You add xp buffs through food and fireworks and you might even have some buffs in your bank to use. Move to a active dragonstand map, kill things for a few hours and you should get several levels very shortly, especially since the first one or two are super easy.

Yes, and so I have taken a break for the last 2 months.

Before when PVE bored me, I would go to WvW, but that is rather dead these days. The new maps are too complex, not that I dislike a challenge, but sometimes (I said this in the casual thread) you just want to kick back and play. With SW you could do that, or you could go hard and try and make every breach, jump in the fight more etc….

I just feel there is nothing for me in the game anymore. If I could grind legendary armour in wvw (but the old maps, or new ones split up in to separate maps to each team) Or through a massive grind in open PVE events, I may be around. But as it stands, having more fun taking up FPS again.

75% of the time the path is blocked by a mastery I don’t have yet.

Only time your path is blocked by a mastery is with bouncing mushrooms and basic gliding which you can get easily doing the VB meta. Then no more blocked paths, where did that 75% come from?
