Is it just me?
That really is the core of the problem.
As I and others explained here and there, we want to play the new content with our elite specs, not get an elite spec at the end.
we are of course dismissed as “wanting all content ever plus a WoW account full of max level toons with max gear handed to us on a silver platter just for ordering HoT”
But that’s it, I want to play the new content, explore stuff, and I’m already expecting to grind millions (literally) of exp for masteries.
There are so many other factors artificially inflating play time with asinine grind as it is, would it have killed them to go a little easier on the hero points?
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon
The reverse is that elite specs are meant as end-game progression (just like masteries). The idea is that you get more capable of using them after reaching level 80. People felt that GW2 was lacking end-game goals and longer term progression so Anet decided to add that without adding vertical progression.
I always figured we’d have to “do” stuff to earn the elite spec. I just didn’t think the cost would be quite so steep though. Still, I can deal with that, depending on how those unlocks are spaced out in the 340 point window (60 to start, 400 for complete = 340 point gap to space things in).
Eh, from what I’ve been able to glean from reading stuff, it’s not going to be as bad as people are imagining. I think it’s gonna be one of those things you’ll feel on the 3rd or 4th character, but you won’t notice a whole lot the first time around.

Depending on how many masteries you need for the first you may feel it on your first more than on your second since the second would go faster.

Maybe so. I missed the part about how masteries are involved.

I likely won’t notice at all with my main~
Because Berserker is meh. So he’ll stay in Green Dry Top earning mastery experience for a bit. Flying and such should make getting hero points on my alts much easier.
