I have been gone for about a year now and was wanting to come back to the game and give it a try with the release of the expansion. Is the game still worth playing without the expansion or is it better to just wait till i have the money to buy the expansion before coming back again. Like i am not sure how the mastery system works but if i was to play now can i still earn stuff for it and maybe just not use it till i buy the expansion? I know i do not get the new weapons for the class’s and i can not go into the new areas but was wanting to know if there is still stuff i can do that will help me when i have the money to get the expansion?

You’ll need mastery points and Hero points to do anything with the new specializations and the new mastery system. You can be getting those in the core game so when you do buy the expansion, your elite spec is close to done and you won’t be scratching around for the Tyrian mastery points.

I played for 3 years without the expansion. Odds are good you’ll be able to find things to amuse yourself for quite a while yet without the new toys.

Preparation-wise you’ll want to do Core Tyria hero challenges and generally pile up a decent warchest of gold.
