It makes me sad
Yes. In fact, it will probably have a bigger playerbase than it does now, because that’s how MMO Expansions work.

Alts — Necromancer, Warrior, Elementalist
No, it is not going to end like this. Don’t worry. There are always players who are playing just core game and those who can play core game and HoT too. Playerbase is just divided for a while little bit.
There are plenty of ppl who have already pre-purchase HoT. If you did pre-purchase it they will be with you in HoT area. Those who are staying in core game are in there.
I am sure that many of those who does not have pre-purchase game will wait until they see what they will get with their money. If it is worth it, they will buy it when they have good information from it.
Some will wait until HoT have first discounts and buy it in there and join to those who have already played in new expansion area. And some will never buy it.
It is like in Guild Wars 1; There were those, who had all games Prophecies, Faction and Nightfall and expansion Eye of the North. Then there were those who own only Faction, or Nightfall, but not Prophecies. You can imagine all combination with these 3 games:
1. Faction yes – Nightfall and Prophecies no
2. Nightfall yes – Faction and Prophecies no
3. Prophecies yes – Nightfall and Faction no
4. Faction and Nightfall yes – Prophecies no …
You can continue the list as long as you want.
And yes there will be a lot of playerbase to speak after the release of Hot. Just calm down and enjoy the game
I was really looking forward to what HoT would bring to the game. The game would once again flourish with new and returning players, there would be new content to explore, new builds would develop and the community would feel really alive and active again.
People might be upset now. But I’m absolutly sure that 99% of them will still buy it once they see how awesome it is.
All we wanted was a GvG.
No, I don’t think this will kill the game. Despite all the upset, the opinions we’ve seen don’t constitute the majority of players. It’s possible that the majority are fine with it. Many that don’t like the price will wait till HoT goes on sale in the future and pick it up then. Also, the pricing deal for new players is really good and some of those that leave will be replaced by others.
Do I think their handling of this has lost them money and customers? You betcha.
Do I think it’s enough to kill the game? No, I don’t.
“players abandoning the game like a sinking ship”
What are you talking about? Most people that I know in-game have pre-ordered and the ones who didn’t will defintely buy it. They’re just waiting to know if there are going to be any changes to what we’ve already discussed/whined about.
Do you really think that they’re making elite specializations and masteries for you to go back to queensdale to kill centaurs and save bunnies? Of course they’re going to include end-game content!
New players are coming to reddit seeking for advice everyday. Older players are returning to the game. I believe that despite of the “lack” of PvE content GW2 will continue to be one of the most played MMOs out there. I’m constantly meeting new players on PvP maps, and losing because of it (lol).
Flipping your camps since 2014 :3
To be fair, I don’t think anyone expected it to go down like this, Anet included. You never change a business plan mid stream unless legally obligated to do so.
What they should have done is say “hey you know giving it to new players for free is a great idea but we’re locked in now, how about we do (X) for the next expansion”.
