Just got HoT
Yeah, you made a mistake. Accept that fact, and everything good you find will now seem like an unexpected bonus.
If you go into it waiting for something to smack you down, you won’t have much fun. Go in with low expectations, and you may enjoy it more.

I find it a lot of fun. Only way to tell is to try it yourself. Forums anywhere is not a really good indicator of what the game is like to actually play.

Wow! Statements like this baffle me. They’re valid, but I am on the other end of the spectrum.
I have greatly enjoyed the expansion. I suck at the Revenant, but I do enjoy it both mechanically and thematically.
I am also someone who will enjoy the product created rather than impose my expectation on the product. I tend to be less disappointed that way.
Instead of setting expectations low as Palador suggested, I would go in with no expectations and enjoy the features you like and disregard the content you don’t like.

This is what I did, I bought it for a Black Friday sale, and when I got into HoT preparing to get pwned by everything that moved, I was surprised to see it wasn’t that bad. But I see the issues people have, and share a lot of them. I think the majority of it sums up to grouping makes the HoT zones so much easier. You can stop to look around and enjoy the beauty of the new zones. Instead of panic running through to events or waypoints.
A lot of the specializations are really fun, so that an added bonus.
Just got HoT hope I didn’t make a mistake, and hoping to try out the revenant class. xD
Yep, you made a mistake. You better look up the refund policy quickly. Many people here already gotten their money back.
Revenant is a lot of fun. If you are buying the expansion mainly for rev and the new elite specifications, as well as some of the qualify of life improvements, I’d say you made the right descision and likely won’t be disappointed.
If you are buying expecting the new HoT areas to be as accessible as the core world, you are in for a rude awakening. HoT is pretty unforgiving for the casual player. Soloing is very difficult (unless you pick the right class like Ranger or Necro). You will be forced group grinding events for a long while, since unlocking masteries is required to fully explore the maps, and that will take a significant amount of hours. The forced grouping can be pretty spectacular though when things all work right. If you are prepared for the good and bad this mechanic involves you may enjoy the new HoT areas.

A lot of people went in carried on the hype, and the reality of the situation crashed into them hard. Preconceived notions of how it would be made them less willing to adapt to what they got, and I think both game and players have suffered as a result.
It’s the same with any form of entertainment. Hype it up beyond what it’s worth, and people tend to end up liking it less than they would have if they’d gotten no hype for it at all. Dashed expectations tend to make for bitterness. Sometimes, it really is better to go in expecting the worst, so you can be honest about the good parts when you find them.

Yeah, I know what you mean.
I feel like there are some missed opportunities with the story. I also feel the delivery of the story to be lacking. And the reason we (or at least I) complain about these types of things, I would like to think, is because we like the core product and can see the potential for so much greater.
It can be difficult to manage expectations when you release something can can appeal to so many.
All of that said and to the original posters question, I still feel the purchase of the expansion was worth the money. And I have enjoyed the content.

The design of the PvE stuff is amazing, I recommend you take your time exploring because the expansion area is quite small.

I think HoT was worth 30$ max, certainly not the 50$ they sold it for. World too small compared to the original release, too many unfinished elite spec like tempest and barely any endgame content.

Look online, it is going for about half the original price.

If you look at launch content for HoT at $50, yeah, the price is a little too much, maybe. But if you consider the living world stuff and the other “free” (included with your purchase) content they add over time, I think it works out to be good bang for your buck.
With the base game, I paid $50 or $60 (can’t remember which) and I got about 900 hours of playtime for it. I would call that a good return on investment.
Admittedly, I wouldn’t expect not quite as much out of HoT but even 200 to 300 hours would still be worth it to me.
It’s only a mistake if you had to give up on something necessary to buy it, like clothes and food for your kids. If you had the money to spend, then you’ve bought a number of hours of entertainment, probably much more than you’d get for the same money spent on a few movies or a dinner out. I suppose if you bought it and never even installed it, then there’s an error somewhere as well …
The only game purchase I count as a flat out error in my life is ArcheAge, prepurchased based solely on a friend’s screenshot of the character creation in beta and his belief that I would think the game was fun. And parts of it were in fact fun, they just got overshadowed by all the not-fun. Yet the mistake lay not in trying out a game for myself and deciding I didn’t like it, but in giving even the tiniest amount of support to a truly horribly sleazy game company that encouraged cheating and griefing and went back on promises of content that players paid for and then did not receive. Since GW2 isn’t subject to such practices and ANet is actually a decent group of people, you’re safe from that error.
I bought it for 20 dollars off the actual price so I guess thats the upside to it, I don’t mind upgrading. But yeah thanks for all the feedback.

The explorable content there is is great while it last. It just that there is no new dungeon, no new fractal, only one raid with a crazy difficulty wall and only 1 pvp map.
For 20$ it’s a good deal.
The only way to know if you made a mistake or not is to play around with it for a few weeks and see how you like it.

the raid has been proven to be beatable with exotics only and many PUGs kill vale guardian and Gorseval, it’s far away from ‘crazy difficulty wall’
