Legendary Precursor Crafting
use gw2bltc.com it tells you the cost to craft (minus time sinks) and the cost on the TP.
For instance Zap currently costs 900g on the TP, buy only ~400g to craft:

Crafting costs assume you buy and make things using the base materials. so you would be time gated by making your own deldrimore, etc, but still buying the mats.
Whether or not a precursor is cheaper to craft or buy depends on how much of the materials for them a person buys or actually farms.
Buying a lot of the materials means the TP precursor price is usually much cheaper.
Farming all your mats will significantly lower the price and significantly increase the time it takes for you to actually get said precursor.
Whether or not a precursor is cheaper to craft or buy depends on how much of the materials for them a person buys or actually farms.
Why?
If you farm many mats they have a worth. You can sell them in the TP or use them to craft a precursor. In both ways the amount of Gold you are investing is the same (minus TP fees).

If you farm mats with the intention of using them, you’re not selling them. I’m talking about how much of the gold a person has when they begin farming that they are either keeping or spending due to outright buying something like mithril ingots – buying the ingots instead of farming the mithril ore and crafting the ingots.
If I’m looking to make something specific, I can spend 5 gold in mithril ingots or I can farm the mithril ore, craft the ingots, and keep my gold.

I spent a little over 300 gold to craft Leaf of Kudzu because I have several raw materials in my savings. If I had bought everything and made it from scratch, it would totally cost more than the TP price of the precursor.
So, the cost itself really depends on how much materials you bank.

They are correct. Look at where the numbers are coming from and how they’re being calculated.

Yep, there is a HUGE profit to be made currently by making your own time gated mats. People are very impatient.
