Im still pretty new to the game as im a lvl 73 Thief, just curious about something concerning HoT. Better weapons than legendary ones will be coming out so should i not waste my time with getting one? (i know i wouldnt b able to get one before expansion release, just a question)

Better is subjective. New Legendaries will be available with Heart of Thorns. As most of us have yet to see them, I’m not sure how many will feel they look ‘better’, and how many will not.

Regardless, you can begin the journey to acquire a Legendary now, and decide which one you prefer after more options are available, if you so desire.

There are no ‘better stats’ with the new Legendaries. Only new skins.

All legendaries will always be equivalent to the highest tier of gear (Ascended at this time).

Legedaries are not “better stats” in the first place.

Ascended is the BiS in terms of stats. Legendaries are simply ascended pieces with shiny effects and the ability to switch the stats any time you’re not in combat.

There won’t be a better tier of stats, like ever. Arenanet specifically designed the game around not making your hard earned gear suck with expansions. That’s why they put all this effort in to the mastry system for endgame progression in stead of just adding more levels and gear tiers.

Ascended and legendary have the same stats, but you can switch stats freely on your legendary weapon.

BiS is shorthand for ‘Best in Slot’

Yes, outside of combat you can click legendary gear to open a menu that lets you select which cluster of stats it provides. Once you pick, the bonus to those stats is the same as an ascended item.
