For the next shortbow I would really appreciate stepping outside the box and making a crossbow. A crossbow is like a steampunk variation on a shortbow. Incinerator is a high-tech daggar, HOPE is a high-tech pistol, this could be the “high-tech” short bow.

Effect would be shooting red plasma bolts and the footsteps would red as well.

Name would be AMAZES: Azuran Modified Auric Zero-point Energy Shortbow.

Think Chewbacca’s Energy Crossbow.

Same thing I’ve wanted and suggested since year 1. A Crossbow SB skin.

Wouldn’t be the first unique Shortbow considering the Slingshot. Depends on if they feel like actually making combat animation tweaks for a Legendary. But there’s probably no turning back now if they haven’t already decided to do that, since the SB has already been designed and is just Top Secret currently.

they would need to change the animation for each race for crossbow, a skin is just a skin and wouldn’t work as a different weapon entirely.

I know…just hoping it is in the high-tech type so I can eventually complete my collection of all three legendaries….eventually.

Well they already did that with Daredevil and SB is primarily a Thief weapon so we can keep the trend going.

I would expect that, if a crossbow (which is nothing like a steampunk shortbow) were introduced it would be as a rifle or pistol skin due to similar pose and animation of the wielder.

A crossbow is a mechanical bow. Not sure how it would be a pistol or a rifle when it fundamentally involves a “bow.”

Because it is held and fired in a manner closer to a rifle (or pistol in the case of a hand crossbow).

Although mechanical tension, rather than a chemical reaction, provides the motive force in a crossbow the actual usage is closer to that of a firearm.

You mean in real life.

In Tyria, weapons are focus items for channeling magic powers and bear only artistic resemblance to their Earth equivalents. IRL, a staff can bash in variety of ways; it cannot produce clones, call meteors from the sky, pull or taunt, or be used to leap. Weapons IRL work the same whether wielded by a marine or a plumber.

There’s absolutely no reason why ANet has to follow the same tropes of other games in designing weapons for GW2. We have plenty of ‘longbows’ that look like ‘longbows; I’d be happy to see something like a crossbow for style (although I’m not sure that a legendary is a good place to for outside-the-box thinking, since we get so few of them).

(Hijacking the thread just a bit: similarly, there’s room for creativity in other weapon types: we have lots of greatswords that look like tongue depressors, fire-red torches, scepters that look like mini staffs + staffs that look like kanye-ego-sized scepters, and so on.)

I was not suggesting it based on real life. My central point was that the visual appearance of using a crossbow, by a character in a fantasy game, is closer to that of a gun. Animations, not reality drove my response.

And I was suggesting that it doesn’t matter for this game — it’s a style preference. The OP is inspired by the idea of a bow looking like a crossbow, while you wouldn’t spend a copper coin on it. GW2 isn’t a traditional fantasy game in many ways, one of which is that there’s nothing specific forcing the “focus item” that rangers use to look like traditional fantasy RPG bows.

As an in-game example, the Dominator Staff looks a lot like a bow designed by a dyslexic (although obviously it doesn’t animate to stretch and fire projectiles).

I’d like to see more weapons with a few non-traditional skins.

How do you think it would look if all characters held the crossbow like they hold a shortbow?

The argument was solely based on the work devs have to put into it. Crossbows could just use the standard animations from rifles or pistols, but implementing alternate animations for shortbows would probably need a lot of work. That would make it a lot more likely to see them as a skin for pistols or rifles.

I would prefer them having their own weapon type though.
